Chester Malcom, little son of Mrs. Pearl Malcom, is seriously ill with infantile paralysis and fears are entertained for his recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Abbott, Mr. and Mrs. John Weaver and Mr. and Mrs. Klebler formed a party which spent Sunday at Newport Beach. Miss Martha Pratt has resigned her position with the Pacific Telephone Company in Los Angeles on account of poor health and is now at her home in this city. Mother and child are doing well and the fond papa declares the new arrival to be the finest little fellow who ever happened. Peter is passing out Havanas and is wearing a broad smile which shows no indications of coming off. Mr. and Mrs. Hollingsworth and family have returned from a six-weeks' visit with relatives in Portland, Ore. While there they celebrated their silver wedding anniversary and the golden wedding of Mr. Hollingsworth's parents. Many other relatives were present for these two occasions and an old-time reunion was held. Mr. and Mrs. John Hartung returned on Monday from a two-weeks' tour of Yellowstone Park. They spent a week viewing sights in Nature's wonderland and express delight at the many inter- Miss Florence Lacey has laid aside a pair of crutches which she was forced to use by having a knee-cap fractured in an automobile accident six weeks ago. Bayard Evans and Lane Bentz went to San Diego on the former's motorcycle one day the past week, returning the next day. They made the trip in record time and report a fine outing. The Turners meet every Monday and Thursday evening in the hall over Kroeger's store for gymnastic work. All young men of the city athletically inclined, are invited to join the class. Directors of the water company went up the river on Saturday to inspect pumping plants on the Gumber tract and at Horseshoe Bend, with a view to increasing the water supply. George W. Hamler, one of the city's popular trustees, is improving the shining hours by cultivating and irrigating his walnut grove south of town. Mr. Hamler has been for some time a member in good standing of the Never-Sweat Club, and his many friends will be sorry to learn that he has forfeited his membership in this popular organization. August Schumacher returned Monday from a tour of the beaches in which he visited all the beaches from San Diego and Coronado to Venice and Ocean Park. He was gone two weeks and says he had a way-up time. Tom McGerll, Wm. Woods and a Mr. Tut, wealthy cattle men of Billings, Mont., who are sojourning at Long Beach, where Mr. Woods' mother is ill, were guests on Monday of their old friend and crony, V. U. Simpson. The 9-months-old son of Peter Berg and a grandson of J. P. Berg of this city, died at his parents' home Monday. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon from the residence at Richfield, and interment made in the Anaheim cemetery. Mrs. Neill E. Bailey and little daughter Dorothy May, of Jerome, Arizona, were guests of friends in town yesterday. Mrs. Bailey is spending the summer at coast resorts. She is accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Von Gundel, of Savannah, Georgia. Mrs. H. D. Schmelzer was taken suddenly ill Saturday evening, and the physician pronounced her aliment pomaine poisoning. Ice cream flavored with vanilla was supposed to have been the cause. Other members of the family also suffered, but not so seriously. W. L. Kreuscher demonstrated his prowess in the fistic line one night last week when a Mexican attempted to enter his apartments on South Los Angeles street. Needless to say the Mexican went out faster than he went in. He was also a little the worse for wear. Dr. John H. Boege returned Tuesday morning from a weeks' trip to Prescott, Arizona. Mrs. Boege remained at Prscott for several days as a guest of Mr. and Mrs. John Bauer. The doctor reports a way-up time, and weather cool at the high altitude of Prescott. Dr. George Lambeth, an old schoolmate of Walter Ross, is visiting that gentleman for several days. Backs, Jr., assistant secretary, Wm. J. W. Orr, superintendent, First National Bank treasurer. These gentlemen with C. O.Rust and Dr. J. L Beebe compose the board of directors. Dr. Lambeth has recently graduated from the medical college and is now house surgeon at St. Mary's hospital in Kansas City, Mo. Walter is showing his friend a good time, and on Tuesday took him for an auto tour in which Long Beach, Los Angeles, San Fernando and intermediate points were visited. R. Fischle this week installed a large ice cream freezer to replace the old one which is outgrown. Mr. Fischle makes candies and ice cream and well deserves the large success which he is receiving. His is the only fountain in the city which uses Anaheim-made ice cream and he is a firm believer in the "trade-at-home" slogan. His new freezer has a capacity of several gallons more than the old one and will supply the trade for some time to come. Mrs. Frank L. Eastman, her son Raymond and Mrss. F. K. Eastman left yesterday for Long Beach where they will take up their residence. Frank Eastman will join them today. He has taken a lease hold upon an apartment house at the beach. He some weeks ago tendered his resignation as carrier of mail on rural delivery. He has been engaged as carrier for 12 years, taking charge of route No. 1 upon installation of the service here. He has been a faithful and competent carrier, and his departure will be noted with regret by his many friends. Edgar Hartung, Arthur Howard, Miss Lillian Lybarger and Miss Beatrice Clemens spent Sunday at Laguna Beach, going down in Mr. Hartung's auto. A trip was made into the hills and as the party were coming down grade at a good rate of speed, the left rear wheel came off and the rear axle was broken when it struck the ground. Edgar at once applied the brakes but they refused to hold and the car plunged into a ravine at the side of the road. It careened upon its side and narrowly missed turning over but was righted in time to prevent injury to the occupants. The party rturned home in another machine, and Edgar went out later with another auto and brought his own car in for repairs. Michael Theodore 10-months-old son of Wm. Bonkosky, died at the family residence on West Center street Wednesday morning about 8:30 o'clock. Death resulted from the child's inability to digest its food. The little one had not been healthily normal since its birth and little hope was entertained for its ultimate recovery. On Monday, Dr. Wm. A. Edwards, an eminent specialist in childrens' diseases, and a brother-in-law of Wm. H. Taft, was in the city to attend the sick child. Although everything that medical science could devise was done for the child, mortal means were of no avail and the little one breathed its last. The funeral will be held Friday morning at 10 o'clock from the residence on West Center street. Henry Hansen made an automobile trip to Lakeside, San Diego county, on Saturday, accompanied by his family, and spent Sunday with his son who is a leading citizen of El Cajon valley. H made the trip over the famous Poway grade, and the tour was made going and coming without mishap. He returned on Monday afternoon, making the voyage in seven hours. A shower of rain fell at Lakeside before his departure. At San Juan by the Sea he saw the state highway commission surveyors who are running a line and setting grade stakes for the state highway. W. H. Houts and family, John Cook and family, F. A. Yungbluth, M. W. Martenet and A. H. Witman, formed a fishing party at Newport Sunday. A launch was chartered and the party made out to sea. Jeweler Witman caught the first finny trophy, and then contracted seasickness and the excellency of the bait he used caused the fish to bite rapidly and the rest of the crowd had fine luck. The members of the party brought back many baracuda and bass, a number of which were distributed among their neighbors. Much obliged, boys; it was fine. Joseph Fares has opened up a large department store in the Deutsch block just west of the postoffice, and has a full line of mens' and boys' furnishings, dry goods and notions. Mr. Fares has had much experience in conducting stores of this kind, and is meeting with gratifying success in his venture in Anaheim. "This place is growing and I believe can support another store of this kind," he said. "We can offer good inducements to buyers and are meeting a popular need of the town.
