THE WAYS OF WOMEN
Human nature is, of course, compounded of mysteries and unanswered riddles. Many of them have received at one time and another a considerable amount of attention, but one at least appears to have been overlooked. No one seems to have pointed it out or inquired into it.
Briefly, the question is this: What is there in the possession of any kind of domestic animal to make self-contained and otherwise respectable people create commotion in public?
Probably you have seen the disease in full working order. You know what happens. A beautifully dressed woman owns a dog, which she takes out for a walk. The dog, having learned by experience that the ways of transgressors are not particularly hard, stops at a street corner to gossip with a friend. The lady walks on, looks back and sees her property a hundred yards away.
She has been nicely brought up and her manners are exquisite. She would not shout across the street to her husband, even if she wanted to speak to him ever so badly. She would not whistle for a cab of for an evening paper. She would not make noises in public to attract the attention of her dearest friends or to call a policeman. But—she owns the dog.
So, first she endeavors to perform a sonata on one of those inefficient whistles which women who own dogs so frequently possess. By the time she has attracted the attention of four errand boys, a milkman, and a passing taxicab she decides that poor dear Fido can not hear it, so she tries whistling with her mouth.
That does not do Fido any harm,
Developing Into an Importance in This Country
The sugar beet has evolved as one of the most agricultural crops over the country, but planting of this European retary Wilson in his many new problems has system of well-equippedatories in the beet-grow where studies in pathology and agronomy can be close contact with the essential to a speedy and lution of the various presented. Two such additions have been established the past year, and other templated for the near future.
Leaf-spot and curly-important diseases of sugar received special attention.
upon damping-off and root-rot has been inaugurated.
The breeding of special strains of beets for American conditions is an important line of work which should yield valuable results. It has already been shown that American-grown seed yields beets which are superior to those grown from European seed. Moreover, the seed produced by Europe is insufficient to meet the increased demands of both the European and the American markets. Indeed, Old World dealers have recently turned to America in an attempt to purchase large quantities of American-grown sugar-beet seed for sale in Europe. It appears that America must produce her own beet seed before the beet-sugar industry can become properly established here. It is only natural that in the face of the present shortage the best of the European seed should be retained for use there, so that the American sugar-beet growers are not only sending many hundreds of thousands of dollars annually to Europe for seed which should be produced at home, but they run grave risks of securing only inferior seed which will materially reduce the profits of beet growing.
A number of problems in beet culture and questions of irrigation and rotation are also pressing for solution. Work along these lines has been inaugurated and is being pushed with all possible dispatch. In order to profit as fully as possible by the knowledge gained by Europeans in their long experience with this crop, a representative of the department has been sent to visit the beet fields and experiment stations of Germany, Russia and France, with a view to the adapting of their practices to American conditions.
but it helps the errand boys (re-enforced by this time) to appreciate the jolliness of life. By the time she is out of breath she has taken to hammering on the pavement with her parsol. It is rough on the parasol, of course, but it doesn't disturb Fido one little bit.
So, then, she grows desperate, and shouts. There is no other word for it. She opens her beautiful mouth and shouts, while the crowd (quite a big crowd now) admires and bets on the result. But in the meantime an errand boy, smarter than the rest, has gone chasing Fido, whom he captures and brings to his mistress. She may give him a dime or she may not. The certain thing is that she will go her way, serenely unconscious that her conduct has been in any way remarkable.
Why is it? How is it? Ask a person who does not own a dog to make such an exhibition of himself, and he will blush violently and subsidize the nearest boy to fetch the animal. Ask him to wait while it is being done, and he will pray for something to hide in—yet his manners are probably worse than those of the owner of the beast, and his sensitiveness much less. Can any one explain why women, otherwise well bred, will so far forget their dignity when it comes to dogs?
500 BARREL WELL STRUCK
Amalgamated Oil Company Brings in Another Wealth Producer.
The Amalgamated Oil Company on Friday brought into the producing column well No. 2 at a depth of about 3300 feet. The well is now producing 500 barrels a day and adds another notable achievement to the record of the Amalgamated Company, which was the pioneer in opening up a vast acreage of wildcat territory east and north of Fullerton, all of which is now regarded as almost certainly a fertile field for oil operatives.
The company has made a brilliant record in sinking this second companion well to No. 1, which is still maintaining around 400 barrels a day.
Well No. 3 which is down into oil rotation are also pressing for solution.
Work along these lines has been inaugurated and is being pushed with all possible dispatch. In order to profl as fully as possible by the knowledge gained by Europeans in their long experience with this crop, a representative of the department has been sent to visit the beet fields and experiment stations of Germany, Russia and France, with a view to the adapting of their practices to American conditions.
ART OF "MAKE-UP"
Interesting Information That Should Be of Service to Masqueraders
"Make-up is an art by itself," says Lizzle Frelligh, with the Bowery Burlesquers, the attraction at the Gayety, says the Philadelphia Record. "You begin with a thick coat of cold cream rubbed all over the face, and well cmf the pores, so that 'he skin will not be injured by the paint and the rouge that are to go on later. And after this is rubbed down a coating of flesh-colored grease paint is applied.
"There are two shades of the flesh-colored paint. The darker is applied to the nose and the lighter to the rest of the face. This is done so that the nose perspective, for the darker shade of paint has the effect of throwing the features to which it is applied into the shadow.
"By the time these two tints have been applied the face is just about a blank. A thick layer of powder is then laid on, and after that the entire face is dusted with rouge. This is to give a healthy color to 'he whole skin.
"Next, abright coat of rouge is given to the cheeks. In case of overplumpness the lower halves of the cheeks are slightly darkened previous to applying the rouge. If they are too thin, white has the effect of making any feature to which it is applied stand out.
"Different colored paints are used for the same effect by women of different complexions. A brunette, for instance, uses black paint to throw a shadow about the eyes, while the blonde uses blue for the same purpose. For coloring the eyelashes, black, of course, is used. A little of it is scraped off the stick and melted over a gas or alcohol flame—there is a little spoon-shaped vessel for this purpose. And when it is reduced to liquid form the paint is applied with an eyelash quill. This is called 'beading the eyelashes,' because the drops run down and form a little row of hairy dark line in then."

Well No. 3, which is down into oil sand, is expected to be brought in in comparatively short time and indications are equally good for a product similar to Nos. 1 and 2. No announcement is made of the location of new wells but it was understood that the company will start one farther south.
SUGAR BEET CULTURE
Developing Into an Important Industry in This County.
The sugar beet has established itself as one of the most important agricultural crops over a large section of the country, but in the transplanting of this European industry to the virgin soil of America, says Secretary Wilson in his annual report, many new problems have arisen. A system of well-equipped field laboratories in the beet-growing regions, where studies in pathology, breeding and agronomy can be carried out in close contact with the fields, is essential to a speedy and successful solution of the various problems presented. Two such additional laboratories have been established during the past year, and others are contemplated for the near future.
Leaf-spot and curly-top, two important diseases of sugar beets, have received special attention, and work instance, uses black paint to shadow about the eyes, while the blonde uses blue for the same purpose. For coloring the eyelashes, black, of course, is used. A little of it is scraped off the stick and melted over a gas or alcohol flame—there is a little spoon-shaped vessel for this purpose. And when it is reduced to liquid form the paint is applied with an eyelash quill. This is called 'beading the eyelashes,' because the drops run down and form a little row of beads. A heavy dark line in then drawn above and below the eye. When these lines meet at the end they are usually elongated to give an effect of greater size. Lastly, a dab of rouge is applied to the corners, just as you see on the face of a doll, for the purpose of adding a touch of brilliance.
"The entire face is covered with a thick layer of powder, which is blended tinting the eyes red, completing the make-up."
DISCOVERS PARASITE
After traveling around the world for eighteen months in search of a parasite which infests the orange groves of the United States, R. S. Woglum of the Bureau of Entomology, Department of Agriculture, has reached Washington with the coveted prize. He brought back from India six orange trees covered with the coveted parasites, which he found in the hills of India. The parasites were in fine condition after their 12,000-mile trip.
Bill—How's business going?
Jill—Like clock work.
"Why, I heard he'd failed?"
"So he has. They've just wound up his business."
