THE MCNAMARA CASES
Incidents have followed one another fast during the week in the Los Angeles dynamiting cases. On Friday J. J. and J. B. McNamara withdrew pleas of not guilty and made full and complete confessions. The first confessed to the Llewellyn dynamite job, the second to murder in connection with the dynamiting of the Times building, in which 21 men lost their lives, October 1 of last year. The preceding day Bert Franklin, chief detective for the defense, was arrested on charge of bribing a prospective juror, and was released on $10,000 cash bail put up by Le Compte Davis, an attorney for the defense. Charges that two of the jurors sworn to try the case were bribed have been current and on Monday Mrs. Robert Bain, wife of Juror Bain, confessed to receiving money to influence her husband to vote for acquittal of J. B. McNamara, who was on trial charged with murder.
Never in the history of this country have the people been so astounded at the corruption which point the finger at the defense in this trial. Out of it all District Attorney Fred-

Out of it all District Attorney Fredericks issues forth as the really great man of the case. He had proof of the borthers' guilt, and he put up a masterly fight against them.
Judge Bordwell on Tuesday morning sentenced J. B. McNamara to life imprisonment, and J. J. McNamara to fifteen years. Both will be taken to San Quentin prison.
LAND AND PRODUCT EXPOSITION
Tide of Immigration Expected Hitherward in Spring.
Exceptionally low rates, the most liberal ever given by transcontinental and subsidiary lines in the history of the West, will probably be accorded the visitors at the Land Show of the Pacific Land and Products Exposition which will be held in Los Angeles next March. Thus in addition to the numerous tourists who will be here and the colonists who will come from the East, people from all points of the Rocky Mountain and the Pacific Coast States will journey towards Los Angeles at that time.
Aside from the low passenger rates, the railroads will likely make liberal rates for the accommodation of the exhibitors so that a large amount of the expense to them will be greatly

curtailed. These matters will come before the meeting of the Transcontinental Passenger Association in Chicago in February.
Last year a one and one-third fare was given from all points in California, Arizona, Nevada and Utah, but the railroads this year will be asked to give reduced rates from all points west of the Missouri River.
Arrangements are being made by the Land Show officials for special excursions from Denver, Salt Lake City, Cheyenne, Spokane, Seattle, Portland, Ogden, San Francisco, San Joaquin and Sacramento Valley points and from cities in Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and the west coast of Mexico.
Arizona, Nevada and Utah are leading all their efforts to make the best showing possible at the Land Show of the Pacific Land and Position to be held in L next March. These states well satisfied with the rest year they are going into stronger this year.
Riverside and Imperial County among the first to begin their exhibits for the Lo Land Show which will March 12th to 28th next has reserved a large space and the whole count play as a whole instead of making individual efforts.

Collier is comparatively a young man. He has served the exposition ever since it started in 1909 without salary or expense account of any kind. He has acquired wealth and declares it is his ambition to see San Diego a city of 150,000 and the Panama-California International Exposition the most beautiful and unique exposition ever built. It is due to his driving energy and enthusiasm that the exposition has begun. President Collier has announced that, owing to the equable and mild climate of San Diego, the exposition will be opened January 1, 1915, the day the President of the United States declares the Panama Canal open, and will be kept open the entire year, closing December 31, 1915 at midnight. Over $2,500,000 has been subscribed toward the preliminary expense of the exposition and is estimated that $7,000,000 will be spent upon it.
President Collier is now in Washington seeking the passage of a resolution through the United States Senate empowering the President of the United States to invite the participation of the Latin-American republics at the Panama-California International Exposition. The House already has passed the resolution.
TREES BEAUTIFY CITY
State Forester Homans Gives Timely Advice on Subject
State Forester G. Morris Homans says: "Tree planting in park strips between the curb and sidewalk is the easiest, surest and cheapest way to beautify a city. The more beautiful a city is made, or any particular section of a city, the more rapid is the rise in property values. Ultimately, this means more money in the pockets of all the citizens, and especially of those who own homes.
There are many who think civic landscape improvement should be left to the respective individual property owners. A little study and consideration on your part will convince you of the fallacy. Some people are enterprising, others are not. Some own their own homes, others do not. But even if every one were active in beautifying the strip in front of his property, still it would be better to have the city do the work, for most people have neither the time nor the experience necessary to obtain results. Moreover, there is no one tree,
claions, formed of the progressive and public spirited citizens either on one street or in some particular neighborhood, have rendered most ecxellent service. If the city is large enough the services of a trained gardener should be secured. There are many smaller cities and towns, however, not yet able to secure the services of an expert, that are in great need of a more uniform system of street ornamentation.
The first thing to decide, is the specie or species of trees to be planted. Then the trees must be such as will flourish in city conditions of smoke, gas etc. The stem must be erect and straight the crown compact and symmetrical. Do not select trees of untidy habits, that are always shedding bark, leaves or fruit. The trees must not be brittle, for each tree, growing alone, gets the full force of the wind and storms. The tree to be chosen must not be one that tends to disrupt the pavement, curb, sidewalk and sewer with its roots.
Is your vacant lot attractive and your back fences sightly?
California towns and cities, already justly famous for their beauty, could be made more attractive still by the intelligent united and well directed efforts of the public spirited citizens, along the lines of street improvement.
GHASTLY GRATITUDE
Frank Coffyn, the well-known aviator, was talking in Detroit about the perils of flying.
"When we aviators hold our Thanksgiving" he said, "there is usually something ghastly about it. We're grateful only to have broken one leg, or something of that sort."
"Ghastly gratitude—a little like the huckster's, in fact.
"I hear your wife's ill," a friend said to the huckster.
"She is that—terrible ill," the huckster replied.
"Dangerous?" said the friend. "Don't tell me she's dangerous."
"I'm very thankful to say," said the huckster, "that she's too weak to be dangerous any more."
