CHILD FATALLY BURNED
Neighbors Tear Out Wall of House to Effect Rescue.
The year-old son of Victor Kohler, who lives on the County road just beyond West street, died at 7:30 o'clock on Tuesday evening as a result of burns sustained in a fire which destroyed the residence two hours before.
The father was away at his work at the time, the mother was absent at a neighbor's, where she was employed. Two other children were in the house at the time, and it is supposed the fire had been caused by sparks flying from a wood stove.
Neighbors went to the house at sight of the fire, and liberated the two larger children, who excitedly pointed to the sleeping babe in an adjoining room. It was impossible to enter the room because of the fire. Led by Harry Pierson and others, a crowd of men procured pickaxes and tore away the wall of the house near which the baby lay. It was rescued, but died of its burns two hours later.
An alarm of fire was rung in at 5:30, as a wind was blowing from the east. The fire department responded on a run. Two streams were played upon the building a few minutes after the alarm.
At 2 o'clock on Tuesday afternoon, an alarm was rung in for a fire which destroyed a barn on Godfrey Betz's place on South Lemon street. Two horses and a colt were burned. A cow was saved: One of the horses was led from the barn, but stamped and ran back into the building and was burned to death.
