TALKING STATE HIGHWAYS
Riverside Seems Critical of Action of Orange County
Orange county was not represented at the last meeting of southern supervisors in conference on the proposed route of the state highway because the notice of the meeting only reached Orange county's representative on the day of the meeting and he was unable to reach Los Angeles in time. This happened because some one neglected to mail the notice to Supervisor Struck, who had been named to represent this county. He received it after the meeting had been held.
Riverside county appears to be somewhat critical of Orange for recommending that the state highway pass through the part of the county where people live, instead of having it fringe the peatlands, gun club reserves, and rocky bluffs along the coast, whose share of the tax that builds the road is infinitesimal compared with that of the interior road districts. A Riverside paper comments on the Orange supervisor's position as follows:
"The merchants and manufacturers' association of Orange is also active in mapping out a desirable portion of the state highway in conjunction with committees of other Orange county towns in securing the highway through that county, the route in favor being along the El Camino Real, through Fullerton, Anaheim, Santa Ana, Tustin and San Juan Capistrano. The report from Santa Ana says:
"Riverside and San Bernardino are making every effort to have the state highway commission select what is known as the inland route to San Diego, and the Orange county committees will endeavor to show the highway commission that at least se-
ered from the damage by frost inflicted a few years earlier, resulting in a crop less than half as great as in 1890.
The orange crop of California made a gain of 145.4 per cent during the decade between 1899 and 1909, increasing from 5,882,000 boxes in 1899 to 14,436,000 boxes in 1909. During the same period of time the number of trees of bearing age increased from 5,649,000 to 6,616,000, or 17.1 per cent. There were also in 1910, 2,093,000 trees of non-bearing age. In 1909 the average product per tree was 2.2 boxes. With respect to the quantity of fruit, San Bernardino county rose from third rank in 1899 to first in 1909. In 1899 Los Angeles county ranked first, and Riverside county second.
The value of the oranges produced in 1909 was $12,952,000, an average of $0.90 per box.
The lemon crop increased from 874,000 boxes in 1899 to 2,716,000 boxes in 1909, a gain of 1,842,000 boxes, or 210.7 per cent, although for the same period the reported number of trees of bearing age decreased from 1,493,000 to 927,000, or 38 per cent. The value in 1909 was $2,926,000, or $1.08 per box.
The production of oranges in Florida increased from 273,000 boxes in 1899 to 4,853,000 boxes in 1909, a 16-fold gain. The number of trees of bearing age was 2,553,000 in 1900,and 2,751,000 in 1910, an increase of 7.8 per cent. The number of trees of non-bearing age in 1910 was 1,098,-000. The value in 1909 was $4,305,-000 or $1.11 per box.
The lemon crop increased from 2359 boxes in 1899 to 12,367 boxes in 1909,a gain of 10,008 boxes,a four-fold gain. The number of trees of bearing age reported decreased from 22,691 in 1900 to 11,740 in 1910, or almost one-half. The number of suitable as a means of transportation in the field, says Gen.

"Riverside and San Bernardino are making every effort to have the state highway commission select what is known as the inland route to San Diego, and the Orange county committees will endeavor to show the highway commission that at least seventy-seven miles of road construction can be saved by building to Orange instead of over the inland route.
"To come through this way would add only twenty miles to the distance between San Diego and Riverside and San Bernardino, and would give the people of those sections a more direct road to Los Angeles."
"The Riverside county board is in favor of a coast highway and an inland highway, too, and it is generally understood that it is the ultimate intention of the commission to build two such roads, but the position taken by the Orange county people in the suggestion given above only tangles up the two ideas by deflecting the road from Los Angeles to cross their county and then throws the highway back to the coast at San Juan Capistrano. In making the suggestion they are antagonizing the desires of the supervisors of Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego counties, and it is to be regretted that they saw fit to suggest a combination of coast and inland highway for the purpose of taking in some of their inland towns.
"Had the Orange county board of supervisors availed themselves of the invitation to attend the conference held in Los Angeles some time ago, when the state highway commission asked the southern boards to send representatives to Los Angeles and there meet and discuss the various plans with the commission, it is believed they would view the matter in a different light.
"All of the southern county boards of the state were invited to attend, or send representatives to the conference, but Orange county was not represented, being the only one of the counties to disregard the invitation, for what reason is not known."

ALMOND GROWERS WIN POINT
Shelled Meats Will Not Have to Be Shipped in Boxes
Hereafter almond growers of this state will not have to box shelled almonds, neither will they have to pay double freight rates on sacked almond meats. Upon petition from the almond growers association the railroad commission recognized the difference between almonds and other shelled nut meats, in that almonds are not injured by breakage of the meats when sacked, as are walnut and other nut meats.
As the railroad companies agreed to reduce the rate on sacked almonds from double first class to first class, the commission did not make a formal order in the matter; but informed the representatives of the railway companies that it would enter such an order, if the promise was not kept.
The commission heard evidence as bearing age was 2,553,000 in 1900,and 2,751,000 in 1910,the increase of 7.8 per cent. The number of trees of non-bearing age in 1910 was 1,098,.000. The value in 1909 was $4,305,.000 or $1.11 per box.

GROWTH OF CITRUS INDUSTRY
Florida Gained 7.8 Per Cent in Decade While California’s Gain was 17.1 Per Cent.
Washington, Nov. 16.—A preliminary statement giving statistics of the orange and lemon crops in California and Florida, the two principal states of production, as reported for the thirteenth United States census was issued today by Director Durand of the bureau of the census of the department of commerce and labor. It includes a summary giving the number of trees, of both kinds, of bearing age on farms on April 15, 1910, together with the number of boxes produced and the value thereof in 1909. It was prepared under the direction of Dr. LeGrand Powers, chief statistician for agriculture, bureau of the census. The figures are subject to such revision as may be necessary after a further examination of the original reports.
The census bureau calls attention to the fact that the number of trees reported in 1910 is not altogether comparable with the figures reported in 1900. In the latter year the trees reported as of bearing age undoubtedly included a considerable number not of bearing age. In the census of 1910 the difficulty was eliminated as both the number of trees of bearing age and those not of bearing age were called for by the schedule. And moreover, the orange and lemon-growers of Florida had not in 1900 recov-
suitable as a means of transportation in the field, says Gen. Aleshire; but a truck of special type has already been planned for testing purposes.
The commercial truck is usually too heavy when loaded to be safely used over country bridges and culverts. The idea carried out in the experimental truck is that with a load of 3000 pounds, it will not weigh over 6000 pounds.

Renounces Throne to Wed Untitled Girl
Yet another Austrian archduke has renounced both rank and title to marry the woman of his choice. The Archduke Ferdinand Karl, brother of the heir presumptive, applied as long ago as 1904 to be allowed to marry Fraulein Czuber, the daughter of a Vienna Professor of engineering, whom he met in 1900 at a ball in Prague. He was, however, persuaded by his late brother Otto during the last few years to postpone his decision, and spent his time largely in travel.
It is now stated that he lately again approached the emperor for permission to marry, which his majesty granted on condition that the archduke become a private citizen. The emperor consented to continue the allowance of $8250 to the archduke, but the latter must renounce his title, his rank as major general, his claim to the succession to the throne and his seat in the Austro-Hungarian upper house, and take the simple name of Ferdinand Karl Burg.
The lady for whom the archduke has waited for ten years is now 30 years old, and is distinguished for her beauty and talent, which brought her into the higher circles of society, though the family is of humble origin and possesses only moderate means. They were used at that time by a member of my family for weak and aching back, and the results were satisfactory. Whenever we feel backache coming on, we immediately procure Doan's Kidney Pills at Mullinix's Drug Store and a few doses bring prompt relief.
