MONEY, HOME BUILDING
Mr. Magee of Home Builders Talks of His Company
T. A. Magee of the Home Builders was in town on Friday in the interest of his investment company. The Home Builders is a sound and reliable business corporation of Los Angeles, and local people who invest their money in it will find it a conservatively managed and entirely solvent business enterprise offering them great opportunities for profit. Home Builders are entirely free from the frenzied finance which Orange county people have been recently subjected to, and those with money to invest will do well to look up this company and make further inquiries.
"One of the questions I am often asked when Home Builders profits are mentioned," said Mr. Magee, "is How do you do it? and to tell you the truth I've had it keep some very good people from buying the stock and simply because they got the notion that any investment which pays more than from 4 to 5 per cent must be such a good thing that it would be gobbled up by a few big stockholld country long, you have witnessed the wonderful strides forward and you can count more people who have become independently wealthy in home building enterprises than you have fingers and toes.
"Now Home Builders plan is simply, as I have said before, a prorating of this profit to its stockholders. It conducts a wholesale business of home building; every item down to even a four-penny nail is bought for cash and in such quantities as to procure the lowest price. It has its business so organized that the cost of doing business is minimized and thus its profits are kept as large as good business usage will warrant.
"Through its real estate department it purchases for its clients the building site, if he or she does not already own one, and on each transaction it makes a profit.
"You will admit that 25 to 33 1-3 per cent is not beyond the probable profit of any contractor and builder; adding to this the premiums on insurance and the commission on realty purchases, you can readily see, I am sure, a very respectable earning for an enterprise of this character.
"But this is not all. After Home Builders has built the home for its les arrived in San Jose and Gaudalup who were wanted murder of a man Ventura authorities formation that there where in the vicinity and had put the Lities on the case.

"One of the questions I am often asked when Home Builders profits are mentioned," said Mr. Magee, "is How do you do it? and to tell you the truth I've had it keep some very good people from buying the stock and simply because they got the notion that any investment which pays more than from 4 to 5 per cent must be such a good thing that it would be gobbled up by a few big stockholders and not be open to popular participation.
"To begin at the beginning, I may say that Home Builders is operated on a co-operative plan and its profits are prorated amongst its stockholders. Its affairs are in the hands of a board of fifteen directors who are elected annually by the stockholders—there is no one-man power in its management.
"As a shareholder you have a proportionate share in the earnings; these are paid regularly every three months (quarterly) in the shape of cash dividends. You also own your proportionate share in the accumulations of its surplus and dividend profits, which goes to fortify your investment and increase the value of your holdings.
"But why are Home Builders profits so large? Principally because in the nature of its business the competitive element is eliminated; that is to say, to get business it does not need to enter into a profit destroying competition.
"If you are conversant with the growth and development of Southern California, all argument of large profit in home building is unnecessary, because, if you have lived in this building site, if he or she does not already own one, and on each transaction it makes a profit.
"You will admit that 25 to 33 1-3 per cent is not beyond the probable profit of any contractor and builder; adding to this the premiums on insurance and the commission on realty purchases, you can readily see, I am sure, a very respectable earning for an enterprise of this character.
"But this is not all. After Home Builders has built the home for its client and made these usual building profits, and the first payment has been paid, the deferred payments, or the balance dueH ome Builders all draws 8 per cent interest. These deferred payments and interest create a constant monthly income.
"This 8 per cent interest charge being paid by the client monthly is put right back to work doing the same thing over again, and thus 'money that money makes more money.' Interest and profit compound so fast that Home Builders realizes far in excess of the 8 per cent which the home buyer pays.
"The men who are active in Home Builders affairs today are the same men who organized it something over three years ago, being re-elected unanimously each year by the stockholders at their annual meeting."

Sepulveda located the men living in the southeastern part of the city, and where they had been going under the name of Perris. He placed them under arrest and took them to the county jail, and later took the men to Los Angeles. Sepulveda knew nothing of the details of the crime, or as to how the men had been traced.
Manuela Provencia, an aged Mexican woman who was taken up a few weeks ago in a demented condition, had been cooking for the men.

days. Preparations are being made to make the affair a great success, and the whole county will be asked to take part. And, by the way, Santa Ana should make a special effort to do her full share to help make Anaheim's projected carnival a success. Anaheim has done the like by Santa Ana, not once only but several times. It is now our turn to show that we appreciate the good will of our sister town and are glad to know that she is prosperous.—Santa Ana Blade.
SCHOOL TRUSTEES MEETING
First Annual Convention at Santa Ana on Saturday
The First Annual Convention of School Teachers will be held in the courtroom in Santa Ana on September 16, 1911. The plan of the meeting is to discuss a great many topics of great interest to the schools of the county. The program contains many subjects for discussion, others may be introduced at the meeting, and trustees are requested to make a list of questions that they would like to have answered.
I hope that each school district in the county will have at least one trustee present to participate in the Ana from Los Angeles and passed the night at the Silkwood home. The next morning the girl wanted to return to Los Angeles with Mrs. Valby. The parents protested, and called Deputy Sheriff Jernigan to the house. The officer was asked to stop the girl, but he could do nothing as she is of age. She declares she will commit suicide unless the prosecution of Hunt is dropped and they are allowed to get married. It is understood the parents object to a marriage unless Hunt becomes a holy roller.
As the result of a conference between the prisoner, Sylvia and her parents at the jail, the parents of the girl will offer no further objection to the two getting married, and if the law does not interrupt their plans the young woman and Hunt will get married.
The conference at the jail lasted for one hour and when it was concluded Hunt and the parents of the woman shook hands and agreed to work as friends instead of enemies. It is understood the entreaties of Sylvia and her sister Minnie brought about the reconciliation between the parents and the prisoner. If the case is dismissed the first wife of Hunt will

County Auditor Declines to Pay Motor Cops’ Warrants
The fact that the law gives the board of supervisors no authority to employ deputies for county officers is Auditor Lester’s reason for refusing to honor three warrants drawn in favor of the motorcyclist officers, J. Peters, Roy Davenport and B. Lard, who were employed as deputies to Sheriff Ruddock for a time. After looking into the law Dist.-Atty. West has agreed that Lester is right in his stand.
The officers were appointed by the supervisors to go after speed maniacs, but after serving a short time their services were discontinued. The warrants were for $5 each, and were approved by the district attorney. On this showing they were allowed by the supervisors and ordered paid. When they came to the auditor, however, he turned them down. When Dist.-Atty. West looked up the law he admitted he had been hasty in approving the bills, and that there was no doubt Lester’s stand was perfectly right. The only recourse which the motorcops have is a mandamus suit, and it is not considered likely that this will be attempted.
In Los Angeles county warrants aggregating thousands have been dishonored by the county auditor, who says he is ready to stand a suit rather than pay them.
COME OVER, SANTA ANA
Anaheim's carnival will commence September 27th and will last five weeks ago in a demented condition, had been cooking for the men.
School teachers will be held in the courtroom in Santa Ana on September 16, 1911. The plan of the meeting is to discuss a great many topics of great interest to the schools of the county. The program contains many subjects for discussion, others may be introduced at the meeting, and trustees are requested to make a list of questions that they would like to have answered.
I hope that each school district in the county will have at least one trustee present to participate in the discussions and to report the proceedings to those who can not attend.
The meeting should be an enthusiastic one, so that we will all look forward to the succeeding annual conventions with pleasure.

County Superintendent of Schools.
COURSE OF TRUE LOVE
Girl and a Baby, Man in Jail, Incidents of Melodrama
C. J. Hunt charged by Chas. Silkwood with accomplishing the ruin of his daughter, Sylvia, is now in the county jail, having been brought to Santa Ana from Los Angeles some days ago. The case against him in Los Angeles was dismissed and he was immediately taken into custody on a warrant charging him with criminally assaulting Minnie Silkwood, a sister of Sylvia, on July 1, 1909.
Sylvia and Hunt want to get married, but are prevented by reason of the fact that Hunt’s first wife has never secured her final decree of divorce. The interlocutory decree was issued in Los Angeles seventeen or eighteen months ago.
Sylvia and Hunt’s sister, Mrs. Valby of Los Angeles came to Santa
“Freed from the charge of kidnapping the woman with whom he has lived for months, only to be rearrested on a more serious charge and taken to Santa Ana to face it, Clinton J. Hunt left Justice Reeves court manacled to an officer while she woman he loves and who loves him saw her chances for wedding him vanish.
“Sylvia Silkwood, aged 19, with a babe in arms, sat in court by the side of Hunt’s sister, Mrs. Valby, at whose home it was said the babe is guarded with a six-shooter from the parents and family of the Silkwood girl. In vain she had the previous day secured a marriage license and attempted to wed Hunt. In vain she turned tearless but hopeful eyes upon the man in the dock until the prosecution moved to dismiss and she learned that Hunt was in custody on a more serious charge preferred on behalf of her sister, Minnie, aged 15.
“Then hope died from her eyes and she turned to the little mite in her arms, while the father, with only a pitying glance in her direction, was marched from the room.”
