SOCIALIST PHILOSOPHY Second Prize of $10 Awarded to Ray Overracker of Huntington Beach for Best Essay The Socialist party is one of the most criticised of all parties. Very few except the Socialists themselves know exactly what Socialism is. Some think that it is the same as anarchy; others a scheme of the few to make slaves of the rest. Socialism and anarchy might have had the same beginning, but the anarchist wants to obtain equality of the people, without an organized government. The anarchist claims that the government is the cause of all the evils of our present system, while the Socialist readily sees the necessity for a well-organized government. In a word Socialism might be defined as a collective ownership and operation of all utilities; that is, that the land, factories, and railroads and other necessities for society are to be owned and operated by the government in the interest of the people. The aim is to remedy the evils of the present system and obtain a more equal and just distribution of wealth and opportunities for all. It would, of course, take some time to establish such a government. The change from present conditions to the state of Socialism would have to gradually take place. The Socialists claim that the evils of today are caused by present individualistic system of government. The main features of our present system are the private ownership and operation of the means of production and distribution which contribute to the welfare of society, or the people as a whole, also private profit is realized on all goods bought and sold. This profit system as will be shown later, but (which are the factories, railroads, land, mines, etc.) are owned and operated by the people. This will result in the democratic management and control by the workers themselves of the processes of production and distribution. Toward this state of affairs the Socialists are working. The tendency of the corporations of today are said by some to be in the direction of Socialism. However, it is ignorance on their part. They are organizing and perfecting their system of industry so that gradually fewer persons are becoming the owners, and soon it is claimed that all industry will be owned by a very few. Then the workers will take control, throw out the owners, and operate it themselves. Joint stock companies are in one sense Socialistic. Each person has a certain share, and he shares equally in the profits according to the value of his stock. Under Socialism we would all be joint owners of all the industry and share equally according to the amount of labor we do. It is impossible to state just how Socialism will be established. All that we can do is to state the principle; how it will work out, no one can tell. First in the cities and next in the states and nation, collective ownership will gradually replace private ownership and operation. Our present system of government is inadequate, and works contrary to the best interests of the people. Shail we stand idly by and see our nation go to ruin, or shall we be up and doing, working to secure equality and justice for all? Socialism is the only remedy for the existing evils cf today. ASPHALT AND BITUMEN Like most other products of petroleum, asphalt is increasing in importation. Large increase in assistant Building. The enormous people of the United States Geological Working Industry chapter of "Minor 1909," has aroused on the subject of fireproof structure, the growing use of products of burned natural consequence, low building tile walls seems to be Some very attractive effects have been made in tile in combination provements in frie with stuccoed or provements in fro texture and in coated within the have enhanced tha duct as a building. The idea by machinery origin land and a plant years ago with ar was the first to us By this system there was 1,500 brick.estroyed by fire s built. In 1909 a from 600 to 1000 what different successful operation of Socialism would have to gradually take place. The Socialists claim that the evils of today are caused by present individualistic system of government. The main features of our present system are the private ownership and operation of the means of production and distribution which contribute to the welfare of society, or the people as a whole, also private profit is realized on all goods bought and sold. This profit system as will be shown later, tends to centralize all the wealth in the hands of a few. Socialism will remedy these evils by the establishment of a co-operative commonwealth which will eliminate the profit system. When the United States became a nation in 1783, there was no centralization of wealth to any great extent, because we were then a new nation made up mostly of working people who made their own living. As soon as progress began, especially in inventive and commercial lines, the wealth of the nation began to centralize in the hands of a few. The invention of labor-saving machinery quickened the centralizing process, until today about one per cent of the total population of the United States owns about three-fourths of the wealth. The capitalist class, by their shrewdness, have become the owners of the factories, railroads, and other means of production and distribution, and the mass of people, the workers. The capitalists control the prices paid to labor and to producers of raw material, and because of this they have piled up large fortunes for themselves at the expense of the workers. Of course the expenses of these corporations are large and even equal to profits, but the money paid out goes to a multitude of people as compared to the income. A million dollars expense might be paid to a thousand workers and producers of raw material, but a million dollars profit would go to only a few persons, perhaps ten or twenty persons, amounting to from fifty thousand dollars to one hundred thousand dollars each. The money paid for expenses goes to many, the income to a few. Thus the corporations have piled up large fortunes by means of the private ownership and operation of the different means of production and distribution, and the profit system. Socialism will remedy this by giving the people the ownership and operation of this property and by eliminating the profit system, also by giving the workers Our present system of government is inadequate, and works contrary to the best interests of the people. Shail we stand idly by and see our nation go to ruin, or shall we be up and doing, working to secure equality and justice for all? Socialism is the only remedy for the existing evils cf today. ASPHALT AND BITUMEN Like most other products of petroleum, asphalt is increasing in importance as one of the mineral products of the United States. Oil asphaltum, which is the asphaltum residue, derived mainly from the oils of California and Texas, made up more than half of the 208,655 tons of asphaltum products in 1909, according to a report just issued by the United States Geological Survey. Bituminous rock—that is, sandstone and limestone impregnated with asphalt—is another asphaltum product of increasing importance, and the output of different forms of hard asphaltum, such as glisonite, is growing rapidly, the product being used in the manufacture of asphalt varnish. In an effort to find a cheap substitute for rubber interesting experiments have been made with two bituminous minerals, elaterite and tabbyite. Material very similar to rubber can be produced, for which good wearing qualities are claimed when used in automobile tires and elsewhere. During the year 1909 other varieties of bituminens similar to elaterite and tabbyite were discovered. One of these, known as wiedgerite, is a soft, moist material about the color and consistency of liver, which turns black on exposure. Wiedgerite, which is somewhat high in sulphur, is claimed to be especially valuable for the manufacture of rubber substitutes. The increase in the production of oil asphalt is a practical index of the real development of the idea of good roads, because this variety of asphalt is a cheap and valuable binder in developing highclass country and town road surfaces. The statistics of production of asphalt are shown in an advance chapter from "Mineral Resources of the United States," entitled "The Production of Asphalt, Related Bitumen, and Bituminous Rock in 1909," by David T. Day. The report can be had on application to the Director of the Geological Survey, Washington, D.C. COAL PRODUCTION Add This Fact to Know Kidney disease afflicts many a person grasp before awareness Prompt attention should slightest symptom der. If there is a back, headaches, tired, worn-out feel it is dark, foul-smelling and attended with from fifty thousand dollars to one hundred thousand dollars each. The money paid for expenses goes to many, the income to a few. Thus the corporations have piled up large fortunes by means of the private ownership and operation of the different means of production and distribution, and the profit system. Socialism will remedy this by giving the people the ownership and operation of this property and by eliminating the profit system, also by giving the workers the full social value of their toll. If the workers today received the full value of their labor, there would be no profit, hence no large and rich corporations. Under Socialism the people would cooperate and work together. The total cost of a certain article would be its price to the people; by this we mean the cost of manufacturing the article. The profit would be eliminated. The total cost of an article would include the cost of the raw material. If it was a manufactured article or manufacturing, the cost of transportation and the wear and tear on the machinery. When a certain amount of energy is cooperated and made to work together it can accomplish a great deal more than if the energy was directed in separate channels, thus articles of necessity could be produced cheaper under Socialism than they are today under our individualistic system. The plan of Scientific Socialism was worked out by the great German Socialist, Karl Marx. Socialism is a form or state of society in which all the means of production and distribution The statistics of production of asphalt are shown in an advance chapter from "Mineral Resources of the United States," entitled "The Production of Asphalt, Related Bituminens, and Bituminous Rock in 1909," by David T. Day. The report can be had on application to the Director of the Geological Survey, Washington, D.C. COAL PRODUCTION The unofficial estimate of the coal production of the United States for 1910, by E. W. Parker, coal statistician of the United States Geological Survey, is between 480 and 490 million tons. As shown by the Survey's chart of coal production, just issued, the first recorded production of coal was 22 tons in 1814. By 1850 the production had grown to what was then considered the enormous amount of 7,018,181 tons, but by 1860 this figure had doubled and the production for that year was 14,610,042 tons. This was less than the production of Alabama alone for 1909. The centennial year of 1876 saw a production of 53,280,000 tons. In 1880 the figure had reached 71,481,570 tons, yet this is less than the production of the single State of Pennsylvania in 1909. By 1890 the production had jumped to 157,770,000 tons and by 1900 it was 269,684,027 tons. Surely this was about as high as it was believed by most people that coal production would go, yet the figures for 1907 showed the enormous total of 480,-363,424 tons, those for 1909 were 460,-803,416 tons, and according to Mr. Parker's estimate the production for 1910 may come very near the half-billion mark. The use of hollow building tile or block for outer walls seems to be on the increase. Some very attractive architectural effects have been produced with this tile in combination with brick and provements in front brick, both in with stuccoed outer surfaces. Improvements in front brick, both in texture and in color, have been attained within the last few years and have enhanced the value of this product as a building material. No. only was 1909 a year of prosperity in the clay-working industries but it was notable for the introduction of some important improvements. The most prominent of them is the brick-setting machine introduced in the West. The idea of handling brick by machinery originated in New England and a plant equipped several years ago with an elaborate system was the first to use the "unit stack." By this system the unit for handling was 1,500 brick. This plant was destroyed by fire and was never rebuilt. In 1909 a system of handling from 600 to 1000 bricks on a somewhat different plan was put into successful operation in the West and... I began to have trouble from my back and kidneys about ten years ago, and I believe that the drinking water in this locality brought on my complaint.
