PREPARING FOR THE FAIR
San Francisco Looking Forward to Gala Time in 1915
SAN FRANCISCO, April 25.—The World’s Fair City is to be the mecca of thousands of visitors from all sections of the country during the current year, as a result of numerous national conventions of fraternal and other organizations which are to be held here.
The first of these will be held in July, when the National Education Association convenes, in annual session. Prospects are favorable for obtaining the lowest railroad rates from eastern points to San Francisco that ever were granted for a national gathering on the Pacific coast.
That the attendance at this convention will be large is indicated by the fact that twenty states already have secured headquarters at local hotels and that fifteen special trains from as many eastern states have been chartered to carry delegations of educators to the city by the Golden Gate.
The grand aerie session of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, which meets in San Francisco August 21 to 28, it is estimated, will be attended by fully 100,000 members of the order from every nook and cranny of the nation. Arrangements for taking care of this vast throng already are well under way.
Other large gatherings are scheduled to meet here this year, including the annual convention of the international typographical union, and which will swell the number of visitors to the world’s fair city during 1911 to several hundred thousands. That the entire state will benefit by this great influx of visitors there can be no doubt.
purely circumstantial evidence, was penniless and friendless until a local newspaper became interested in his case and succeeded in raising by public subscription sufficient funds add ten years to the traveler’s earthly sojourn.
The major portion of the Glacier Park was surveyed by the United States Geological Survey several years ago, and three topographic sheets representing this portion (the Kintla Lakes, Chief Mountain, and Browning maps) were engraved and printed. These maps may now be obtained from the director of the survey at the nominal price of 5 cents each. The remaining portion of the area was surveyed last year, after the creation of the park by congress, and the results of the entire survey will now be combined into one map. This will be ready for distribution by the Geological Survey about June 15. It will be sold in the ordinary form at 25 cents a copy and a pocket edition will also be bound up in covers and sold at 35 cents a copy.
The map shows all the physical features of the park and will be invaluable to travelers, tourists and campers.

Housecleaning in preparation for the great world's fair four years hence, already has been begun by San Francisco. The board of public works has just issued orders that all vacant frame buildings, generally designated "shacks," situated within the fire limits, must come down. Others, as soon as vacant, must follow suit, until at the end of another year or two, all frame buildings erected within the fire zone for temporary purposes after the fire in 1906, will be only a memory.
The selection of C. C. Moore as president of the Panama-Pacific exposition, is heralded with satisfaction on every hand. The brilliant success attending his efforts as world-wide emissary in behalf of the Portola festival last year, stamps him as eminently fitted for the important position as head of the great world's exposition.
The next important move of the exposition directors will be the selection of a site. Consideration of the various sites suggested has been taken up and hearings are being granted to the proponents of each. Golden Gate park, Harbor View, Lake Merced, Bay View and Sutro Heights are among the places most strongly advocated.
The anti-bucket shop ordinance introduced in the board of supervisors of San Francisco some time ago, was passed Monday and becomes operative as soon as the mayor's signature is affixed. After a futile attempt to defeat the ordinance on the ground of its discriminatory provision in favor of so-called regular brokers, independent brokers have declared their intention of testing its constitutionality in the courts. Meanwhile the sportive San Franciscan is finding plenty of opportunity to give vent to the American passion for gambling.
The voters of Alameda put themselves on record last Tuesday as favoring consolidation with San Francisco. The vote was taken at the regular municipal election which resulted in San Diego Preparing Fair Celebration in July.
SAN DIEGO, April 25.—Four days of pageantry such as never was attempted before in this state will be celebrated in San Diego on July 19, 20, 21 and 22, during which ground will be broken and the first building of the Panama-California exposition dedicated. It was during July the first mission was founded in this state, the first palms planted, the olive trees introduced and irrigation made possible. All this history will be told in day and night pageants of the most gorgeous character, and in which thousands of people will take part and for which a small fortune will be expended.
The program will be divided between the historical, civic and religious functions and through it all will permeate the carnival spirit. King Cabrillo and his court will arrive on their caravels on Tuesday night and be received by hundreds of illuminated water craft, after which they will be escorted by all of the citizens of San Diego, each carrying a lantern along the line of march over which at the same time will pass scores of floats showing all the details of the history of California from the discovery of the Pacific ocean to the allegorical pictures of the completion of the Panama canal.
The Mission parade to be held during the ground breaking celebration of the Panama-California exposition will consist of twenty-one floats, each of which will be a replica of a famous old mission of California, escorted by thousands of costumed outriders and participants.
The floats will be built and retained as a permanent exhibit at the exposition. The civic and industrial parade will be a display of the fraternal societies who are vieing with each other in friendly rivalry for big prizes offered for the best idea and conception of some historical event. During the week there will be a floral parade arranged and managed entirely by women. Attendant features will be a grand masked ball in the open air; aquatic and land sports; automobile races; an aviation meet; a street carnival; grand display of fireworks; concert by a band of more than a hundred pieces and "The Isthmus" which will be the same to this celebration as was the Midway at the world's fair at Chicago and the Pay Streak in Seattle.

The voters of Alameda put themselves on record last Tuesday as favoring consolidation with San Francisco. The vote was taken at the regular municipal election, which resulted in the return of Mayor Noy as chief executive for another term. As the plans for a greater San Francisco were defeated by the legislature at its recent session, the friendly action, of the Alamedans can serve no purpose at this time, but is accepted by San Franciscans as an earnest of what might be expected to occur if all trans-bay communities were given opportunity to vote on the proposition of consolidation.
A unique campaign for the purpose of raising funds for the San Francisco Nursery for Homeless Children has just been concluded here. Several thousand dollars were raised for this worthy cause by the sale of pencils throughout the city. Some of the most prominent society women of the city participated in the event. This method of raising funds for charitable purposes seems more satisfactory than the over-worked "tag-day" affair.

MAGNESITE AN IMPORTANT MINERAL
The completion of the Panama canal will undoubtedly stimulate many industries to greatly increased activity. The study of the statistics of production and importation indicates this on every hand. At the present time, with the long and hard freight haul across the country, the people of the eastern states can often buy goods from Europe at a less price than they would have paid for similar goods delivered from the Pacific coast states, even when the cost of same at the coast point of production is considerably lower than that of similar articles in Europe.
Magnesite, the natural magnesium carbonate, is an interesting example. It is found in the United States in commercial quantities in California only, and the statistics of production and importation published by the United States Geological Survey very clearly emphasize the point that the cost of transportation holds the American production in check. According to an advance chapter of the survey's volume "Mineral resources of the United States, calendar year 1909," prepared by Charles G. Yale, the American production in 1909 was only 9465 short tons, valued at $38,860, whereas the imports, crude and calcined, were 114,145 tons, valued at $985,019. Even this production, however, showed the large increase of 2878 tons and $18,099 over that of 1908.
Magnesite is more than half gas; it contains 52.4 per cent of carbon dioxide, the gas which gives the snap and sparkle to soda water and which is also used in artificial refrigeration. As it is found in the California deposits, magnesite when comparatively pure is ordinarily a beautiful white.

CRYING FOR HELP

The kidneys cry for help.
Not an organ in the whole body so delicately constructed.
Not one so important to health.
The kidneys are the filters of the blood.
When they fail the blood becomes foul and poisonous.
There can be no health where there is poisoned blood.
Backache is one of the first indications of kidney trouble.
It is the kidneys' cry for help. Heed it.
Doan's Kidney Pills are what is wanted.
Are just what overworked kidneys need.
They strengthen and invigorate the kidneys; help them to do their work.
George G. Sunbury, 172 S. Cypress St., Orange, Cal., says: "I am satisfied that Doan's Kidney Pills are a good medicine for the back and kidneys. When I began using them I was in such bad shape with my back that I could hardly straighten. Sharp twinges caught me in the loins and there was much soreness over my kidneys. Doan's Kidney Pills brought prompt and thorough relief from these difficulties and I can speak very highly in their praise."
