and Los Angeles county. Probably ten meetings will be held. He returned on Saturday from the San Fernando valley, where he held successful meetings at Burbank, Montebello and Toluca.
J. F. Cleaveland of Phoenix, A. T., dropped into town on Sunday morning for a brief visit with relatives, coming down from Los Angeles on the early train and returning at noon. Mr. Cleaveland recently resigned his position as secretary to the governor of Arizona, which position he held under the Kibbey and Sloan administrations, and has accepted the management of a new bank at Phoenix. He came to Los Angeles to procure fixtures for the institution, which he says are among the handsomest in any bank in the territory. Mr. Cleaveland's name has been frequently suggested in connection with the republican candidacy for the governorship of the new state, but he states he has permanently retired from politics, and has no ambitions in that direction.
Ethel Ellsworth, 14 years, daughter of George Ellsworth and wife, was on Friday committed by Judge West in the superior court into the keeping of Mr. and Mrs. H. Bowen of this city. Evidence was introduced in court showing the parents to be unfit persons for the custody of their child. Marshal Simpson states Ellsworth, who is a tailor now employed at Long Beach, came here a year ago as a paroled convict. Mrs. Ellsworth is now in the county jail on a 90 days' sentence for misdemeanor. Her conduct has been bad and her associates improper. She was arrested here some months ago and given a 90-days suspended sentence. She did not live up to her promises for good behavior, and she was locked up.
Ellsworth was ordered by the court to pay $10 per month for the maintenance of his child.
J. W. T. Kimball to prepare articles for the incorporation of a cooperative association for marketing the honey produced by its members. The association will also purchase supplies for the apiarists. The club passed a resolution directed to the board of supervisors indorsing the bee inspector, J. E. Pleasants, for reappointment. Pleasants' petition is signed by fifty-eight apiarists, 90 per cent of those in the county.
C. F. Otterson of Napa, brother-in-law of Frank Ey of Santa Ana, was in town on Thursday with that gentleman. Mr. Otterson is chief of the Napa fire department and came south on a business trip. He had not seen Mrs. Ey in 18 years. While driving in town he met Col. Royer, a former Napa neighbor, as well as Mr. Holland, who is also a former Napa associate. Mr. Otterson was very favorably impressed with Anaheim and its progressive people, observing the town had the most cleanly and business-like appearance of any town he had met on his trip south. He returned north on the evening train, promising to come again for a longer stay.
E. L. Olmstead has tendered his resignation as president of the Orange county investment company, because of the demands of other business interests and the condition of his health, which makes it impossible for him longer to continue at the head of the company which he organized a year ago, and which he has brought to a most successful financial condition. He is succeeded by A. S. Bradford of Placentia, who has been intimately associated with the company for some time past. Mr. Bradford is a successful orange grower and land owner, and under his administration the company will doubtless be maintained up to the high standard set by Mr. Olmstead in the past.
Nineteen guests enjoyed their annual New Year's dinner on Monday at the home of Mrs. J. B. Johnston Claudina street. Place cards were maple leaves in water colors in token of the fact that all present were former residents of Canada. Among those present were Dr. and Mrs. H. A. Johnston 'and family', Mrs. C. M. Knapp and family, Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Wickett, Miss Balfour, Miss Jean Livingston of Los Angeles, Miss Knapp of Los Angeles, Miss Marion Johnston and Robert Johnston.
The big ad.of Louis Z. Kroeger or the fourth page of this paper, will be interesting reading to the economical buyers who believe in purchasing the necessaries where they can buy them the cheapest. Mr. Kroeger is making a wholesale slaughter of prices on his big stock of clothing and furnishing goods preparatory to beginning the New Year with an entirely new and fresh stock, and the prices he is quoting are, he claims, below anything ever offered in Anaheim. Read his ad. It may be money in your pocket to do so.

It may be stated, as a matter likely to be of general interest to the people of the state, that the examiner of schools in his report of recent date calls attention to the increasing excellence of California high schools. The students in the first half year of the college course appear to be doing distinctly abler work than they achieved in former years. It is also a matter of interest that tables prepared by the examiner suggest that students from California high schools attain in general decidedly higher scholarship records than those from non-California schools. This situation is a pride and honor to the state.
