PRAISE FOR HIGHSCHOOL Miss Anna Hussey Plans Novel Course for Students The Oakland Enquirer of date September 22 contains the following reference to Miss Anna Hussey, daughter of Mrs. A. A. Huelster of this city: "Cooking at a camp fire and sewing buttons on neglected trousers is the new course to be taught in the domestic science department at the John C. Fremont high school to a class of boys, according to the announcement of Miss Anna Hussey, head of the department. Miss Hussey who has made many improvements in the girl's courses at the school, and which boasts one of the most modern domestic science departments in the state, has taken up the work at the request of the boys planning to take engineering courses at the state university, and already a number of students have enrolled. Quick bread, flapjacks, biscuits, ham and eggs and the plebian but difficult pork and beans, suitable for an engineer's field diet, will be the principal viands to be prepared by the class, and rough but serviceable sewing will be taught, special attention to be paid to the sewing on of buttons without jabbing the thumb with the needle. Miss Hussey has perfected one of the most complete courses in domestic science for girls ever designed in local schools. She has not only gone into the manner of cooking, but into the scientific facts connected with the" COUNTY SEAT BRIEF'S Benjamin Carpenter, a motorcyclist was injured Sunday night when his motorcycle collided with an automobile truck owned and driven by G. W. Wells. Carpenter cut a corner in turning off North Broadway street to West Fourth, and struck the truck. The motorcyclist was knocked off his machine and two wheels of the truck passed over his abdomen. Carpenter will be confined to his bed for some time. The Orange county poultry, pigeon and pet stock association this week issued a list of ninety-seven prizes to be awarded to exhibitors at the poultry show to be given in connection with the Orange county carnival of products next week. The entries assure the association of the best poultry show ever held in the county. D. M. Gandler, legislative superintendent of the California anti-saloon league, has been here feeling out the attitude on local option of the republican and democratic candidates for the assembly. As a result of his investigations it seems assured that the league will take no part in the legislative fight in this county. Clyde Bishop, republican candidate, has stated that he believes in the principle of local option for cities and counties in regard to liquor traffic, and Col. S. H. Finley, democratic candidate, has made a similar declaration. Sebastin Celaya, said by Sheriff Lacy to have been a guide for Gen. John C. She has not only gone into the manner of cooking, but into the scientific facts connected with the art, the chemistry of cooking and pickling, and the different methods of preserving, with reasons why these are effective. A number of different preserves and examples of culinary art are being made into an exhibition by the students, and will probably be shown later in the year. “The class at the school now numbers 130 girls, and it is expected that by next year the quarters of the department, which is a new one, will be materially enlarged, to keep step with the huge enrollment expected.” BIG SHIPMENT OF LUMBER Local Concern Preparing for Increased Business The lumber yard of the E. L. Olmstead Lumber company, located on the Santa Fe tracks at the corner of Broadway and Vine streets, in Anaheim, is a busy place these days. Over a quarter of a million feet of lumber shipped direct from the northern mills, filling 12 or 14 cars, is arriving and being unloaded by a big force of men. As soon as this consignment is handled and stored another of equal size will follow, giving this concern one of the largest lumber stocks in Orange county and placing them in a position to handle the large and growing traffic coming to them from this city and vicinity. Owing to the rapidly increasing business the company has been forced to secure two heavy teams of their own which are kept constantly busy hauling lumber to the territory in and around Anaheim and Fullerton. The growth of this lumber company which was installed in Anaheim only about six months ago is only another proof of the rapid and continuous growth of Orange county, and especially of the northern portion thereof. At the present time there are fully 50 houses being erected in this district, taking in Anaheim, Fullerton and Placentia, and there is business for all and to spare. There is no indication that there will be any decline in the league will take no part in the legislative fight in this county. Clyde Bishop, republican candidate, has stated that he believes in the principle of local option for cities and counties in regard to liquor traffic, and Col. S. H. Finley, democratic candidate, has made a similar declaration. Sebastin Celaya, said by Sheriff Lacy to have been a guide for Gen John C. Fremont, was in the superior court on Monday on a charge of insanity. His mind is weak by reason of old age and years of brooding over the loss of a season's cutting of wood by fire in Bell canyon twenty years ago. Sheriff Lacy happened to walk into the courtroom where Celaya was being examined, and asked the court not to send the man to an insane asylum. “I’ll look after him myself,” said the sheriff. Romolo Delci, a Mexican, offered to take Celaya into his family. The sheriff said he would stand sponsor for the old man, and if Delci did not give him what he needed the sheriff would give him a room. Celaya was turned over to the sheriff and the examination for insanity was dropped. Delci said Celaya is 90 years old. The old man is almost blind and was deserted by his two sons. “Celaya came to California from Old Mexico in the forties,” said Lacy, “and was a guide for Fremont. Celaya knew all the Southern California mountains. About twenty years ago, Celaya had a big gang of men chopping wood in Bell canyon. A mountain fire swept down upon them and destroyed the product of their labor. Celaya brooded over this misfortune.” The steward of the county hospital said that often Celaya imagined the fire was upon him, and he would then twist his bed clothing into a mass and strike out at the imaginary fire. One hundred and sixty-two acres of land at the northeast corner of South Main street and Delhi road have been sold by James McFadden to W. A. Pallett, recently returned from Central America, for a sum between $40,000 and $50,000. The deal was closed at the office of the Abstract & Title Guaranty Co. The deed was made to Emma T. Pallett, a sister of W. A. Pallett. A mortgage to McFadden, for notes aggregating $21,330, will be recorded. The sale was made through the agency of T. P. Marsh. This property is the south end of the James McFadden holdings east The growth of this lumber company which was installed in Anaheim only about six months ago is only another proof of the rapid and continuous growth of Orange county, and especially of the northern portion thereof. At the present time there are fully 50 houses being erected in this district, taking in Anaheim, Fullerton and Placentia, and there is business for all and to spare. There is no indication that there will be any decrease in building activity; rather the indications point to an increasing volume of this sort of improvement in the towns and country districts and Mr. Olmstead announces that he is willing to back his faith in the future of the county by putting in as large a stock of lumber and building materials as is needed to properly handle the business promptly and satisfactorily. This property is the south end of the James McFadden holdings east of South Main street, there remaining 180 acres in that piece, which is known as the McFadden home place. Sugar beets have been the main crop grown on the property the last two years. Gray spread many bad checks in various parts of Southern California. The California dried fruit producers complained to this government some time ago that their trade in France, particularly in peaches and apricots, recently had been interfered with on the ground that the products contained boracic acid. The matter was taken up by the American ambassador with the French authorities, and the state department was informed in a message from Mr. Bacon that he had been advised by the foreign office that recent analyses had shown that boracic acid existed normally in nearly all fruits. In consequence, he said, the California dried fruits in the future would be subjected by the French government to an analysis less stringent than formerly—one which would show boracic acid only when present in fruit from other than natural causes. A certificate of origin for dried fruits which had been offered by the California fruit growers will not be required by the French government. To get results have your eyes tested at Hartfield's.
