DISCIPLINE MUST BE PRESERVED
Gen.Nelson A.Miles tells this story to illustrate the result of carrying military discipline too far There was a certain colonel who, in the middle of a campaign, was seized with a sudden ardor about hygiene He ordered that all the men change their shirts at once.
The order was duly carried out, except in the case of one company, where the privates' wardrobe had been pitilably depleted The captain of this company was informed that none of his men could change their shirts, since they had only one apiece When he reported this fact, the colonel hesitated a moment, then said firmly:
"Orders must be obeyed Let the men change shirts with one another."

PICTURES OF THOUGHTS
Dr. Baruduc of Paris is the scientist who has been able to snapshot thoughts, writes Mrs. St. Nihal Sing in The Nautilus. One day recently, while he was at work in his darkroom endeavoring to solve a perplexing problem in the development of a picture, by chance he laid his hand on a sensitized plate. This plate, quite by accident, was placed in the bath along with the others. A faint image was pictured upon its surface. The photographer was puzzled. Finally the thought occurred to him that he had rested his hand upon the plate while he was studying. It was just possible, he reasoned, that his thought had been caught and held by the sensitized plate. He determined to experiment with a vise to establishing the truth or falsity of his surmise. Again and again he repeated invariably were the same. The clearness of the image picture on the sensitized plate, he learned, depended upon the concentration of the mind. Always though, the picture of the thought appeared on the plate.
Prof. Elmer Gates of Washington, D.C., has demonstrated the same thing in a little different manner. Studying his subjects while they were laboring under every variety of emotion, he discovered that different thoughts produced a distinct chemical change in the human body. He came to this conclusion after a series of careful experiments. In moments of climax of emotion he would have the subjects breathe in a cooled tube. The breath instantly became condensed and Prof. Gates was able to chemically analyze the precipitates thus secured. These analyses showed that the color and character of the precipitate were totally different with the various forms of emotion. The injection of these resultant precipitates into guinea pigs determined that their effects were as diversified as their colors. For instance, the precipitate of the breath of a person thrilled with benevolent thoughts proved to be perfectly harmless when injected into systems of the little animals; the breath of a person laboring under malevolent emotions killed them almost instantly—hatred being found to be probably the deadliest poison known to science.

AGE LIMIT OF MAN
Some Residents of Balkans May Have Lived 150 Years
It is announced by one of the officials of the census bureau that it is not believed that in this age a man, ever attained 130 years or anything approaching that total. Centenarians are very scarce, and 110 years are looked upon as the extreme limit. All claims to a greater age are declared to be fabulous and utterly without documentary or other evidence that is satisfactory.
Doubtless those who do reach a very advanced age are few in number, but instances of undoubted veracity are to be found now and in the past. This, of course, eliminates that never-failing crop of negroes and paupers in the almshouses who imagine vain things as to their age, and who talk merely to make a sensation. But there are cases even in this country which reach beyond the limit imposed by the census official, while in Europe there are many more of them. Prince Metchinikoff, undoubtedly the greatest biologist, has devoted much attention to the subject. His researches have covered almost the whole world. He finds that the greatest average age attained by members of the human race is in the Balkans. There are people living in the mountains whose claims to 150 years seem pretty well established. Of course, the records are meager, or lacking, but the claims of the aged are largely confirmed by the living generations in descent from them.
It is Metchinikoff's theory that their great age is due to the diet, which is comprised, to a very large extent, of sour milk. He holds that the ferments in certain preparations of sour milk kill the germs in the larger intestines, which is the principal location of those germs that we call old age, and reduce the working powers below the living limit. He thinks that it is possible for us to copy this diet and thus live to a much greater age than now, but so far he hasn't induced many persons to try it. To live 150 years on a diet of sour milk has few attractions to those who like to eat for the sake of their appetites.
MICHIGAN'S LAKES
Some of Them, Though Very Deep,
Have Been Entirely Grown Over
Five thousand lakes of all sizes is the proud total claimed by the state of Michigan. Some of them are mysterious bodies, having neither inlet nor outlet, nor so far as can be discovered by sounding, bottom.
Many of the smaller lakes, according to Fur News, are slowly growing over and have wide margins of tough sod that will support the weight of a man, although merely resting on water or a thin mud of unknown depth.
These margins tremble to the trend and quiver, for many feet around when stepped upon. There are instances where a lake has become entirely overgrown and for so long a period that the surface becomes solid and the existence of water underneath is unsuspected.
The Pere Marquette railroad company when building a branch between Grand Rapids and Lansing, returned to the work one morning to find that several rods of roadbed had disappeared during the night and a considerable lake had taken its place. Thousands of feet of timber and many carloads of earth were dumped in before bottom was found.

These margins tremble to the tread and quiver, for many feet around when stepped upon.
Thousands of feet of timber and many carloads of earth were dumped in before bottom was found and the road had anything like a firm foundation. The pressure of the displaced water heaved the earth and also cracked it for some distance around, tilting large forest trees, some of which fell.
Water came up through these crevices, bringing eyeless fish, both bass and bullheads, convincing certain former skeptics that when any organ of sense or locomotion falls into disuse it degenerates and finally is lost. Probably these fish were the descendants of others that had lived in darkness for ages.
A small lake in Bowne township, supposed by the rural folk to be bottomless, swallowed up a full half acre at one gulp a few years ago, and where the slide took place the water is apparently as deep as ever.
In the extreme western edge of Ionia county there is a little lake of about three acres in area; it is without any visible feeders or outlet. It is surrounded by woods on the high land, while its margin is grown up to shrubs and flags and grasses peculiar to the ordinary swamp.
This is another of the mysterious water holes, termed bottomless, one party having sounded 150 feet without finding bottom. The water is red and unfit to drink and millions of minute particles of vegetable matter are held in suspension and are in commotion as if stirred by force of an undercurrent or boiling springs.
The only fish are big-mouthed-bass and bullheads. For all that the water seems to be so swampy in character it does not detract from the flavor of the fish, probably owing to the fact of its being better quality in its lower depths.
Nagley's Lake, in Kent county, is formed like a great horseshoe and is about seven miles in circumference. It has been sounded in one place and showed a depth of 250 feet. It has but one insignificant feeder and the natural evaporation must be considered, and yet it has an outlet which flows water sufficient for power to drive a saw mill and grist mill, proving that it is fed by heavy flowing springs that man has never seen. The water is clear blue and cold, and the bottom is hard marl lime.
