Will Hall and Johnny Walls, accompanied by their better halves, chaperoned a party of a score or more ladies and gentlemen from this city, the Grove and Riverside at a picnic and barbecue at Sycamore Flats on Sunday. Major L. L. Vestal has been appointed by Governor Gillett as surveying officer to check up the shortage of equipment in Company E, N.G. C., which occurred during the captaincy of Herman Stern. Major Vestal will report his findings direct to Governor Gillett, and the latter will forward them to the department. M. L. Rogers is in town this week from Los Angeles, renewing old acquaintances. Mr. Rogers passed his 82d birthday in January, and his fondness for a game of whist or a dance with those sweet girls is as great as ever. An old-time resident here, Mr. Rogers is getting the glad hand on all sides. Harry Schoneman of Los Angeles was in town on Friday evening, being a member of the Schoneman-Blanchard orchestra which furnished music for a social hop at the opera-house that evening. Mr. Schoneman is one of the best-known musicians in Southern California, being a violin artist of rare ability. Both are popular young people, and after a short honeymoon trip to points of interest up the coast have returned to Fullerton to reside. Mrs. A. J. Lawton of Santa Ana was in town on Saturday afternoon attending a meeting of the Ebell Mrs. Lawton is prominent in club and society circles at the county seat, and after the meeting was a guest of friends in town. She returned home on the evening train. Parson Kellar dropped into town the first of the week to beguile the tedium of the rancher by telling him the latest yarn about pumping machinery. Keep an eye on Kellar. He will sell you a pump whether you need it or not. Chris Pann was up from the peat the other morning before the fog lifted looking for the nomination for county treasurer. Chris is one of the early birds, and barring a late frost may give other aspirants a horse race. Capt. Schindler and Lieuts. Kellenberger and Selinger are in receipt of orders from headquarters to attend the school of instruction for national guard officers at Monterey in June. Mike Reagan has returned to Los Alamitos after a six months' visit east. Mike viewed the sky-scrapers on Broadway, rode on the elevated and saw many interesting sights, including below-zero weather at Winnipeg, where he stopped for a brief stay. Edward Olmstead and Miss Agnes Rimpau spent Sunday with the former's parents at Redlands. They made the trip thither on Saturday by auto, Mr. Olmstead's father having purchased a new machine at Fullerton. They returned by train on Monday. Mrs. Rothschild of Port Townsend, sister of John Hartung, is here accompanied by her daughter, Miss Emelle Rothschild, and will remain for a visit of several weeks. This is her first visit to Anaheim in 26 years. Mr. Hartung visited with her and her family last year and spent several weeks at Port Townsend and other points north. Markel will give the second of his lectures on Christian science at the Christian church on Thursday evening, the 10th. Mr. Markel had a full house at his last week's lecture upon this subject, and will give the third and concluding lecture on next Thursday evening. He holds that Christian science is neither Christian, nor scientific nor common sense. All are invited to attend and hear him. Postmaster Duckworth on Monday received his commission as postmaster. Dew, a cousin, from the same place, arrived in town on Monday and intend to remain permanently. He reports a successful meeting of Westminster farmers interested in protecting lands from overflow. A committee was appointed to go up the river this week with a view to reporting upon conditions prevailing along the banks. The committee will submit facts and figures at another meeting of ranchers to be held in the near future. Herr Rinklieb of the west country forfeited $25 bail in Judge Howard's court for throwing a beefsteak at his wife. Meat is high, and his honor frowns upon the act of making such unseemly use of it. Herr Rinklieb is the second gentleman of the west country arrested recently for the ancient amusement of whipping his wife. The other fellow went to jail, and the Judge says Rinklieb will follow him if he ever appears in court again. Try a mutton-chop, Rink.
