SANTA ANA F. P. Bowland, a Newport rancher, is made defendant in an action begun in the Superior Court by George Isaao Day and Georgiana Day Perdew to recover the sum of twelve hundred dollars. The complaint alleges that Bowland was one of the sureties given by Martha Shrode, when the latter gave a new bond as guardian of plaintiffs, qualifying for twelve hundred dollars, and as Martha Shrode failed to properly account for the estate and was short some eleven hundred dollars in the amount due each of the plaintiffs, Bowland is sued to make good the twelve hundred dollars, the amount for which he qualified on Martha Shrode's bond. Major L. L. Vestal is just in receipt of a gold medal awarded on revolver marksmanship for 1908 by the state. Major Vestal made 215 out of a possible 250 points during the year at official target practice. He has also won a similar medal for this year, having made 217 out of a possible 250 points, but he will not get the trophy until about this time next year. A number of other officers in the Seventh regiment also won gold medals. The Superior Court was somewhat startled on Friday morning during the hearing of Fred Franke, cited to show cause why he should not pay $326.66 to the county for the care of his son at the Whittier State School, when young Rudolph Franke, now out on parole from the state school, came up to the judge's desk and asked to be sworn. Sworn, he said: "I want to say that they don't feed us right at Whittier. They don't give us any syrup or preserves. They don't give us the right kind of food." Judge West said he had nothing to do with the administration of the state court. Sworn, he said: "I want to say that they don't feed us right at Whittier. They don't give us any syrup or preserves. They don't give us the right kind of food." Judge West said he had nothing to do with the administration of the state school, and added jokingly, that possibly the testimony was given as a reason for reducing the amount of his board bill. When Rudolph was sent to the reform school in October, 1906, his father was ordered to pay $10 a month for his support, but did not do so. When cited he said he never had the money. Dist.-Atty. Davis brought out that Franke had considerable real estate and $1825 in the bank. The judge ordered Franke to draw a check for $326.66 then and there, or go to jail. Franke drew the check. Orange is making a bid for the County Carnival of Products for the fall of 1910. This celebration hitherto has been held in Santa Ana, and each year the supervisors appropriated $1000 for advertising it. A committee from the Orange M. & M. association went before the board and stated that Orange wants a street-fair and carnival next fall. MacMullan moved that it be given an appropriation of $1000, and later made the sum $675. None of the other supervisors seconded the motion and the application was set over to Jan. 5. FULLERTON A lodge of Improved Order of Red Men has been organized at Fullerton with about twenty-five charter members. Officers are: W. A. Goodwin, sachem; F. C. Hezelmahalch, S. S.; A Koch, past sachem and prophet; C. V. Swan, junior sagamore; John Gardiner, chief of records; William McGimpsey, keeper of wampun; E. T. Hall, Tmos Griffith and J. E. Thomas, trustees. Special Organizer W. W. Nutter and Judge Hibbard of River-side, a grand officer, had charge of organizing the new tribe. Members of the Santa Ana order put on the degree work in a creditable manner. The evening exercises closed with a banquet. Fire broke out in the engine-room of the Fullerton gas company at 5 p.m. NEWPORT BEACH Word has been received here from Secretary of War Dickinson to the effect that the petition of the Newport Land Company to dredge and fill in Balboa Island, in Newport Bay, has been denied in accordance with the recommendation of Capt. Fries. There has been considerable controversy over this matter, the Newport Harbor Association entering a strong protest against the granting of the permit. The ground for refusal is that the fill would interfere with present harbor lines. The Newport Land Company has been notified that an application will be granted for dredging a portion of the area in question to a line midway between the high and low water lines. A. T. Wallop discovered thieves doing business in his hen roost at 3 o'clock on Wednesday morning, and fired a shot to make their welcome as warm as hospitable. The neighborhood was aroused, but the chicken thieves made off in a hurry. BASEBALL AT SANTA ANA Next Sunday, Dec. 26, will be Johnson Day at Santa Ana, when Orange county's famous pitcher will make his first appearance on the mound for the Santa Ana nine, he having just late-returned from Washington. It is planned to make this a great day among the fans and no doubt every section of the county will be represented. The greatest turnout in Orange county's baseball history is expected, as every prominent man in baseball circles has been invited and also all the sporting writers of the Los Angeles papers have received invitations and are expected to be present. Ed Crolic, manager of the S.A.B.B. club, has had 2000 portraits of Johnson made and every patron of the game on that day will receive one free. The Salt Lakes will be the visiting team on that day and a hard struggle is expected, as they are near the top of the percentage column. The Maliers will play a postponed game on Christmas. Young Dutch Henrichs, Orange county's other favorite pitcher, will be on the mound in this game. Xmas Perfumes at Mullinix.
