THIS MAN WANTS TO BE FREE
A SHORT-ARM JAB AT GLAD-HANDER IN POLITICS
Would Not Trust Him With Key to His Oatbin, but Is Carried Away With Torchlight Processions And Music—Time for Rational Ideas
Anaheim, Dec. 7, 1909.
Editor Gazette.—Dear Sir: This appears to be an age when you can get any kind of education, from how to be a poet or how to be a pugillist, "by mail." But the opportunity is open for some one to develop a correspondence school that will give a man a mind broadened and free from prejudice. It ought to be well patronized.
We see farmers who could not be induced by any consideration to buy a cow with short horns and a thick tail or a horse that was narrow between the eyes. But the taxing power of the State is in the hands of men who are in politics "for what there is in it." Then they let men spend the proceeds with whom they would not trust for an instant with the key to their oatbin. The only reason we can give for the politician's success is: He knows how to shake hands. That faculty has, with a pleasant smile, landed a great many in office. Does not a hurrah, a brassband and a torchlight procession have more influence over you than you care to admit? Is it not time that we began to exercise a rational choice in our voting capacity?
To emancipate your ancestors from physical bondage required many years and much bloodshed. But the emancipation of our minds is in our own hands and ours only. Get into the navies of world United States and Germany Running Neck-and-Neck Race
The Navy Year Book for 1909, compiled by Pittman Pulsifer, clerk of the Senate Committee on naval affairs, shows the race for second place among the navies of the world to be close between the United States and Germany.
Of fighting ships (battleships and armored cruisers) built, building and provided for, this country has forty-five, and Germany forty-six, but the aggregate tonnage for the United States is 659,241, as against 654,334 for Germany. Germany, however, has a larger number of small vessels than this country, and her total tonnage is 820,692, as against 785,687 for the United States.
Germany's superiority in respect to all vessels is due largely to her torpedo-boat destroyers, of which she has ninety-seven as against our thirty-two. Germany also outnumbers us in the matter of large guns, the number being 208 as against 180.
Of fighting vessels the American tonnage is 73,000 tons in excess of that of Germany.
Great Britain is shown to possess 104 fighting ships, with a total tonnage of 1,480,680. France has forty-six fighting vessels, but her tonnage is more than 100,000 tons less than that of either the United States or Germany. This difference is due to the fact that an exceptionally large proportion of its ships are cruisers.
American vessels are the only ones carrying 13-inch guns, and German vessels the only ones carrying 11-inch guns.
All big guns on British ships are 12-inchers. Thirty-two of our guns are of 13-inch caliber.
The book shows a total appropriation.
shake hands.
Get into the doubting, critical mind. That kind of a mind discovered America; founded the Protestant religion; wrote the Declaration of Independence. Until you get it you will not have realized the full extent of your powers.
America is acquiring commercial supremacy by the ability of her working men to discard the tools their grandfathers used. Apply the same principle to your politics.
Mankind may be divided into two classes, conservative and radical. The tendency of the former is to stick to old habits, laws and customs. The latter looks for new ways of doing things and strives to progress. The old in mind and body are conservative; the young, radical. Conservatism plays no part other than a brake, and has sometimes been powerful enough to stop the wheels of progress; as with China, India, etc.
Radicalism is the chief cause of progress. It is a positive force while its opponent is nearly negative.
The Chinese empire is an example of conservatism. The grandfathers ruled everything there. The United States are the results of radicalism. The breakers of chains and idols have placed us where we are.
What are the works of conservatism? It protects the iniquities of Russian autocracy, the horrors of barbarous Mexico. It fights the child-labor law as well as the eight-hour day.
What are the words of radicalism? It can only be answered by the one word, Progress. It formulates all the laws of motion, heat, light, sound and electricity. It broke the shackles from the slave; made education free to all, and stands by the doctrine that no man is good enough to govern another without the other's consent.
We should study well who have been the conservatives and who have been the radicals in the past. Who is it that has flogged, hanged, tied to the stake, cut off tongues, thrown
is more than 100,000 tons less than that of either the United States or Germany.
The book shows a total appropriation of $1,416,138,448 for the construction of the new navy since it began in 1883. The largest appropriation ever recorded was made last year — $136,935,199.
The largest appropriation prior to the Spanish war was $31,541,654 in 1891.
SOME RESULTS
That was a handsome present the state board of equalization made to the railroads of California—$5000 a month, $60,000 a year. By enormously increasing the assessed valuation of the counties of South California, the state board of equalization was enabled to reduce by the sum stated the taxes the railroads will pay on their property. Taxpayers in South California will pay a great deal more than heretofore; the railroads will pay $60,000 less. Nothing could be more just—from a Southern Pacific viewpoint.
The board of equalization knife cuts two ways. Ventura county, for instance, that was punished with an increase of 100 per cent of its assessed valuation, "will receive considerable less from railroad taxes than a year ago"—$28,000 less. The assessed valuation of San Bernardino was heavily increased, but it will receive nearly $64,000 less revenue out of the railroad tax money.
South California has abundant reason to consider with the deepest care whether a Southern Pacific form of government is an improvement over a republican form of government.—L. A. Express.
OF COURSE SHE KNEW
A delightful little family group was gathered in the library the other evening at the home of a prominent Philadelphia banker who is noted for his domestic tastes and whose greatest delight is the personal supervision of the education of his chil-
word, Progress. It formulates all the laws of motion, heat, light, sound and electricity. It broke the shackles from the slave; made education free to all, and stands by the doctrine that no man is good enough to govern another without the other's consent.
We should study well who have been the conservatives and who have been the radicals in the past. Who is it that has flogged, hanged, tied to the stake, cut off tongues, thrown printing presses into creeks? Who, indeed, but the conservatives? The man who was afraid of letting the light shine; the man with the "sober second thought."
Where will we stand? Which will we choose? We cannot shirk our duty.
Over a century ago a little band of men made the ringing declaration that these colonies are and of right ought to be free and independent states, thus obtaining political freedom. The same opportunity is before us, and it requires the same courage, the same battles, to declare that our mind is and of right ought to be free and independent. B. Anson.
COST OF BREAD A PUZZLE
Chicago, Dec. 9.—Cost of bread in Chicago has proved a puzzle to J. R. Cahill, an investigator for the labor department of the Board of Trade of London.
Mr. Cahill told of his bewilderment before the City Club last night.
"I can't understand," said Mr. Cahill, "how we can buy bread in England for one third the price you pay in Chicago, when you send us our wheat. You have to pay five cents for 14 ounces of bread, while we get a loaf weighing 64 ounces for ten cents. Our four pound loaf never costs more than 12 cents and usually only ten cents. I confess I can't understand it."
