The Methodist Church is being enlarged to a seating capacity of 500. The Folding Crate Company has a force of mechanics engaged upon the structure, which will be remodeled and rebuilt. Louie Kroeger, Herman Schindler, Carl Pressel, Richard Fischle and M. Horwitz took in the sights at Newport on Sunday, where Mrs. Kroeger and the Schindler family are enjoying a vacation. Her signature is that of the last property owner in the four central business blocks to contract for improved thoroughfares, and extending in four directions owners are signing for paving. Mr. and Mrs. George Terry and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Walter are touring the south country in the latter's auto, with headquarters at San Diego. They will be absent a week or two. L. A. Squires has sold his 10-acre improved place southwest of town to Mrs. Lizzie Kemper for $3000. J. E. Stockwell has let a contract for a $2000 residence to be built of artificial stone. Work upon the erection of a large new packing house will begin this week on Santa Ana street, east of Claudina. It will be occupied by the Walnut Association, which will sublease to the orange association now in course of formation. A federal forest planter is in the Santa Ana mountains selecting sites for eucalyptus planting during the coming winter. He is accompanied by Forest Ranger Stephenson of San Juan Capistrano. They selected an area near the Trabuca canyon as suitable for the growing of eucalyptus Business streets down town are well-nigh impassable, what with the thoroughfares being torn up for paving and the sidewalks occupied by a force of men setting poles in the walks and stringing wires. Excavations are being made in all directions, and the steam roller is at work. It is expected the first block to be paved, that on Center street from Los Angeles to Claudina, will be completed some time next week. O. H. Coulter, who is chairman of the products and advertising committees of the County Carnival of Products, was in Anaheim Wednesday in the interest of the carnival, which is to be held in Santa Ana on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 and 8. Mr. Coulter reports receiving much encouragement from all over the country. Whistle club at Bay City at its neat meeting. Louis Graton who works at the Los Alamitos sugar factory, had his hands so badly crushed in a grinder Saturday afternoon, that it was necessary to amputate three fingers of the right hand. Mr. Graton is at the Santa Ana hospital and is resting comfortably. A quarter of an inch of rain fell at San Juan Capistrano Sunday. The rain was general among the foothills in that end of the county. Back in the mountains the fall was heavier; Trabuco canyon had quite a shower.The rain was the edge of a desert thunderstorm, and was accompanied by heat and murkiness. Assemblyman Melrose has received from the Secretary of State a number of copies of the Direct Primary Law which he desires to place in the hands of such electors as wish to study its provisions.The pamphlet contains, in addition to the law forms for making of nominations thereunder, and an analysis of its practical operation.Call and get one. Coulter, who is chairman of the products and advertising committees of the County Carnival of Products, was in Anaheim Wednesday in the interest of the carnival, which is to be held in Santa Ana on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 and 2. Mr. Coulter reports receiving much encouragement from all over the county and says the show will be bigger and better than ever before. Anaheim is expected to be represented with a fine exhibit of products and a number of floats. Last year she had a creditable display but she can do better this year with a little extra exertion. For the week ending Monday night 12 carloads of potatoes were shipped from this city to Los Angeles, the growers receiving $1.15 per sack net. J. B. McFarland reports continued progress and prosperity at the new townsite which bears his name in Kern county. Land which was purchased two years ago at $16 per acre now sells at $50, a number of exchanges having been made at the latter figure. Fifteen pumping plants are in operation and an abundance of water secured. One of the wells yields 140 inches. Two stores, a lumber yard, boarding house and other business houses have opened and a postoffice established. Mr. McFarland looks for the establishment of a bank and box factory. Land is being set to peaches, prunes, grapes, almonds and other deciduous fruits. Mr. Perkins has 40 acres set to roses from which slips will be shipped to the eastern market by carload. The company has issued a report showing that the mill is in a flourishing condition and that there has been a material increase in both tonnage and profit over the previous year. A well-signed petition has been presented to Trustees asking them to call an election for the purpose of voting upon the question of issuing $60,000 bonds for sewer purposes. A number of leading business men are in favor of the proposition. The board decided to take no action until the next meeting. It is estimated the work can be completed and a sewer farm purchased for between $50,000 and $60,000. The sewer proposition has the endorsement of the Merchants Association and the Chamber of Commerce.
