Prof. Topel and wife entertained the teachers of the Central grammar school on Thursday evening, when the Professor delivered a brief address upon Mental Characteristics of the Hawaiians. On Friday evening Prof. and Mrs. Topel were tendered an enjoyable surprise by the graduating class of the grammar school.
H. T. Finck and wife of New York City are spending the week with Mr. and Mrs. Nebelung. Mr. Finck is a brother of the latter lady. He is an editorial writer upon the staff of the New York Evening Post, and for twenty-eight years has filled the responsible position of musical editor and dramatic critic. He is the oldest writer in point of service upon that paper. When he entered the service of the journal Carl Schurz was its editor-in-chief. Mr. Finck has not been in California in eighteen years, and sees many changes. He and his wife go to Mount Wilson today, but will later return for a further stay. While a resident of this city in the early 80's he was leader of the Anaheim band. He is the author of several books which have had large sale,and is a journalist of ability and wide experience.

Apropos of the visit of the State Sanitation Exhibit and Dr. Snow's lecture, it may be worth while to remark that Anaheim has residence streets which are models of beauty, and rear alleys not so far away which are "something fierce." Let the health authorities look these up, and inaugurate a cleaning up. Manure piles and garbage dumps and unsanitary closets are breeding-places of disease. They produce flies and mosquitoes. Let us have a cleaning-up day, and begin with the alleys.
