COUNTY NOTES OLINDA The Union Oil company is pushing work on the Stearns lease in the Fullerton field and is establishing one of the finest camps ever built in any district. The work is planned for permanency and the houses, storerooms and other buildings would be a credit to a large city. The Union is also spending a large amount of money in making new road and repairing old ones, and transportation has been thus greatly facilitated during the past two weeks. The camp is about half way between Olinda and Brea Canyon, and convenient to the drilling in progress in the hills back of it. A large number of homes for workingmen have been erected and foundations are laid for more. Flowers have been planted in every available spot and the Union is living up to its reputation for taking the best of care of its employes. In addition to rigs already up and derricks under way, surveyors have located sites for three or four wells which will be rigged as soon as possible. Derricks have been erected for Nos. 49, 50 and 51. Drilling will be started probably this week. Number 40 is 2700 feet deep and pumping 700 barrels daily, an exceedingly good showing. Back in the hills, No. 48 is being rigged for active drilling and No. 39 Modern Woodmen went to Thursday night to assist in some of the men of that colony. O. B. Back in the hills, No. 48 is being rigged for active drilling and No. 39 has been deepened and is again on the pump, producing nearly 600 barrels of 24 gravity. Other locations are to be selected and more rigs will be placed at an early date. Upon the best authority it may be stated that the Stearns lease will soon become the center of activity of the Olinda hills. Oil men have devoted attention in the past largely to the northern fields, while the southern ones, rich and fully as deserving of attention, have been more or less neglected. Recently the people voted $25,000 bonds for the purpose of buying the property lying between the high school and Tenth street and to erect thereon an addition to the school. H. C. Dawes offered the city his two lots for $2,950 which is $150 more than he offered to take two years ago. Mrs. Ellen Burdick has also risen $150 on her property. Should other property owners stick up their prices the cost of the property will be $13,600, which would leave but $11,400 for the building. The board has an offer of a piece almost across Main street from the high school for $7700 and that may be bought and the building erected upon it. According to the judgment and findings in the French-Carpenter case, Mrs. Fannie French never was married to Carpenter, nor is she married to C. C. Chaffee, the man who poses now as her husband. The findings on both these points are decided and absolute, no guess work about them at all. They simply declare that the allegations of plaintiff's complaint in these particulars are untrue. For a communication sent here from the northern town telling of Pace's whereabouts gave the authorities the needed cue, and an officer was sent north to bring the fugitive back. Antonia and her companions were playing about a water distributing gate where the ditch is open for a few feet. She leaned over the bank to get a drink and fell in. Though the children tried to seize her clothing they were unable to rescue her. The girl was taken into the pipe and there drowned. Dr. Ball, who was at Antonia's home attending her mother, who is ill, ran to the place where the girl's body was taken from the water, but with all his efforts the girl was not revived.
