THE IMPORTANCE OF CORRECT EUCALYPTUS CULTURE
It has been said that one of the greatest problems confronting the United States of today is its future supply of hardwoods. The immense and ever-increasing manufactories of all kinds, the modern style of architecture, the arts, the sciences and every feature of this highly civilized age not only demand hardwoods, but demand them in larger quantities than ever before in the history of the world. It may be said and said with truth that no greater opportunity was ever offered to the state of California than the solving of this hardwood problem by the planting of eucalyptus and other quick growing trees on an intelligent and scientific basis. California, with its equable climate, similar in many respects to that of Australia, is particularly adapted to the growing of eucalyptus trees. In fact, there are only a few other states in the union that can grow them at all, and they are limited to a comparatively few species, while the majority of the species of this wonderful genus can be grown in some part or other of California. This new industry which opens up before us promises to surpass in importance that of the orange, the lemon, the walnut or any other industry of the state.
That the people of California have awakened to this great opportunity may be seen by the fact that many companies and private individuals are now planting eucalyptus on a largely teeming with eucalyptus area and it amounts almost to a craze is a regrettable fact that many papers seem only too willing print anything and everything this subject regardless of the often these articles are misleading and only do harm to a young and mising industry. An article added in the Los Angeles Express two months ago, by a gentleman it stated was a native Australia a resident of Los Angeles and had made a trip to his native and brought back seeds of new of eucalyptus. The species men were E. salmonophloia, then mon-barked Gum," and E. pilulis "Black-butt." Now as a matter fact, neither of these are new to California. It is true the former has been experimented with slight deserves a more thorough test. The E. pilularis or Black-butt has grown here for nearly twenty years and we have trees of it growing different parts of the state. That has been on sale by seed firm for eighteen or twenty years, know of nurseries who sold young trees seventeen years ago made the statement that in Australia the Blackbutt is the quickest tree known, beating even the Gum and growing one hundred high in seven years, under good conditions. Now this may be true Australia, though I very much it. It certainly will not hold here, nowhere has the tree n
new industry which opens up before us promises to surpass in importance that of the orange, the lemon, the walnut or any other industry of the state.
That the people of California have awakened to this great opportunity may be seen by the fact that many companies and private individuals are now planting eucalyptus on a large scale. The plantings of four companies this season in the San Joaquin valley alone amounts to nearly 3000 acres.
It is not at all surprising that the people should awaken to these great possibilities, but it is surprising that they should not have awakened before. The Californian, who is generally conceded to be wide awake and thoroughly up-to-date, seems to have been particularly slow to embrace this grand-opportunity. True, eucalyptus have been planted here for many years, as shade trees, windbreaks and chiefly as a source of fire wood. Magnificent trees have been cut down, chopped up and burned. We now hear talk of the new uses of eucalyptus wood as though it had just been discovered that the wood could be used for anything besides fuel. In Australia and New Zealand the wood has been used for all purposes practically ever since the white man started to develop those countries. Ship loads have been exported to this country and used here for car building and other purposes. Large quantities have been shipped to Europe for many years. Many of the principal streets of London have been paved with eucalyptus wood for the last 15 or 20 years.
The Hon. Elwood Cooper planted a number of species on his beautiful place near Santa Barbara thirty odd years ago, and afterwards cut timber and demonstrated some of the uses to which it could be put. Considerable matter has been published on the uses of the wood. At least two of the leading seed firms of California advocated the planting of these trees for timber eighteen to twenty years ago and devoted much space in their catalogues to the subject,
for eighteen or twenty years, know of nurseries who sold young trees seventeen years ago made the statement that in Australia the Blackbutt is the quickest tree known, beating even the Gum and growing one hundred high in seven years, under good conditions. Now this may be true Australia, though I very much it. It certainly will not hold here, nowhere has the tree remarkable growth. Such an as this is misleading; a man ing for quick returns would easily be disappointed. This article been copied by other papers and all the small country papers published it until this gentleman come to be looked upon as an entity on the subject. As one par to me, "You know he knows all it, he is from Australia." How lly absurd to suppose that because man is from Australia that he authority on eucalyptus. How people from California, going would be posted on the redwood the Big Trees of California?ibly the majority have never one.
The man has yet to come from stralia who can tell us anything eucalyptus in California. He must an authority at home but here different, some of the best there, are of little value here some are failures. Every once while some one will write on lyptus marginata, the "Jarrah" tell us of the wonderful-Jarrah ests of southwest Australia, or value of the wood, recommend planting here, and the papers this up to us as something Whereas, as a matter of fact, perimented with this tree year and everywhere it proved a to lure.

At least two of the leading seed firms of California advocated the planting of these trees for timber eighteen to twenty years ago and devoted much space in their catalogues to the subject, giving a long list of species and the uses to which the wood of each could be put. In 1902 the bureau of forestry of the U.S. department of agriculture published bulletin No. 35 by Prof. A. J. McClatchie, entitled, "Eucalyptus Cultivated in the United States," an exhaustive treatise on the subject, giving the results of the experiments of a number of years, the localities to which the different species are adapted and the uses of the woods. Still, there was practically no planting as a timber proposition. In 1904, the late Mr. Dwight Whiting commenced the planting of a 400 acre tract for timber at El Toro in Orange county and about two years later the Santa Fe railway purchased 7000 acres near Del Mar in San Diego county and commenced planting on a large scale. This seems to have been the turning point in the enterprise. As soon as it became known that the Santa Fe railway had started in to grow Eucalypts on a large scale for its own use, the public began to have faith in it and very soon it was taken up in real earnest. The fact of the Santa Fe railway taking it up, together with the reports of the government on the appalling shortage of hard woods, stimulated the enterprise until now it is one of the principal topics of conversation, it is all the rage, the newspapers are fair-
Such articles as these are making, and if followed would resoundly in disappointment to the public. This new industry of ours is much importance to take any owe. Let us make no mistakes, we plenty of data of our own home California. Let us profit by it.
Prof. A. J. McClatchie's "Eucalyptus Cultivated in the United States," a world of information regarding different species in California, the localities to which they are adapted. Bulletin No. 196, published by the University of California titled, "Eucalyptus in California." N. D. Ingham, is one of the very things published. There is more information in it, in a condensed than anything I know of. Mr. is in charge of the forestry state Santa Monica, but has not coined himself with observations of trees at the station, but has to over half the state observing under all conditions and data for the work. He has vast collection of botanical species and a splendid lot of samples wood of nearly all the species found here.
In planting eucalyptus for the locality and climatic conditions must first be taken into consideration, as some species which near the coast will not thrive hot interior valleys, and other thrive better in these hot interiors, and grow much faster than planted near the coast. For interior valleys and for irrigation on the desert, the E. Red Gum, and E. tereticornis Red Gum, are the most valuable a timber point of view;
with eucalyptus articles almost to a craze. It is probable fact that many of them only too willing to bring and everything on regardless of the facts; articles are misleading warm to a young and protrery. An article appears Los Angeles Express about ago, by a gentleman who is a native Australian but of Los Angeles and who trips to his native land back seeds of new kinds. The species mentioned salmonophloia, the "Sal-Gum," and E. piluloris, the Now as a matter of these are new in California the former has only mented with slightly and more thorough test. But Chris or Black-butt has been for nearly twenty years, the trees of it growing in parts of the state. The seed sale by seed firms here or twenty years, and I series who sold the seventeen years ago. He statement that in Australia it is the quickest growing beating even the Blue flowing one hundred feet in years, under good conditions this may be true in though I very much doubt only will not hold true there has the tree made a leucoxylon, E. Polyanthema, E. viminalis and E. rudis all thrive under these conditions. For planting in the coast regions the E. globulus, Blue Gum, is the most profitable and yields the quickest returns and it is not likely that we shall ever find a better paying tree than this. There are many plantations of this tree, made originally for fuel purposes, which are now being cut for timber and are yielding the owners handsome returns. The famous Sutro groves near San Francisco, comprising 1568 acres, are principally of this species and were sold only a short time ago for nearly one million dollars, this price being simply for the wood as it stands in the tree.
For hillside planting, E. corynocalyx, Sugar Gum, is probably the best and is the most drought resisting of all but will not stand severe cold. The young trees on the Whiting ranch at El Toro have made a clean straight growth, but of course, are slow when compared to E. globulus.
E. punctata, Leather Jacket, bids fair to be one of the best for planting in the coast regions. The trees at the forestry station at Santa Monica have made a quick growth and are exceedingly straight. The wood is of a light brown color, very durable and lasting under ground and is stronger than E. rostrata.
Another species of rapid growth is E. diversicolor or the Karri of south-west Australia. This tree does best in moist land near the coast. The wood is of a light red color, hard and durable, useful for wagon building and for furniture, taking a fine polish.
CALIFORNIA PROGRESSIVE FOREST PRESERVATION
California took another step effort to promote the practice forestry within the state where Gillett signed the bill providing the creation of county board estry. This bill authorizes thirty supervisors to appoint one of forestry, whose secretary, a trained forester Such forests have power to enforce the pledge of the Act, and all lawful ones of the forestry board, and in any event with the powers of officer to make arrests for violation of the law.
The county board of forest granted exclusive power upon the variety, character of trees, hedges and shrubs to be planted upon county roads ways, grounds and property determine all questions respecting pruning, cutting and removing trees, hedges and shrubs, and tent and manner in which such shall be done.
A violation of any of these o this act shall be considered to be made up of a ties incurred through a violation of the provisions of the act, moneys thus received shall be able to cover the expense board.
This law was the direct result of the work accomplished by the county, which has for some trained a paid forester to help with setting out and caring within the county. The retained in that county were...

MOTHER AND DAUGHTER CURED OF 3 BREAST CANCERS
Dr. Chamley cured a large cancer in my breast at my home in 1899. Two years before that he cured my mother of large cancer in each breast. We have both been entirely well ever since. Mother and I together know of at least fifty of his almost miraculous cures. Dr. Chamley saved our lives and we will write to anyone wanting information about his wonderful painless treatment.
