Ben Cook is installing a 42-foot pumping pit on the C. R. Staples ranch southeast of town. The pit will be octagonal in shape, six feet across, and double-locked curb. Mr. Cook has constructed nine wellpits this spring, and has a number of orders ahead.
At the last meeting of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Y.M.C.A., the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, Mrs. J. L. Beebe; vice president, Miss Edith Poapst; secretary, Mrs. F. G. Jayne; treasurer, Mrs. T. S. Armstrong; directors, Mrs. Tipton, Mrs. J. F. Walker.
Rev. Moore is expected to return in the near future and reoccupy the pulpit at the Methodist church, which has been very capably filled during his absence by Rev. Dr. Miller. Mr. Moore has been away on sick leave since early in the year, and has been recuperating at health resorts in the northern part of the state. Dr. Miller and wife, who are in Southern California for the latter’s health, will depart later on for their home in the east.

Monday, May 10, at the home of Mrs. Fred Jayne the ladies of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union gave a farewell reception in honor of Mrs. Pharo who leaves shortly for the north; also Mrs. Dual who will remove to South Dakota in the near future. Besides the guests of honor twenty ladies were present to enjoy the afternoon and bid "God-speed" to the departing members. Dainty refreshments were served, and all report a royal time.
C. R. Staples has purchased a ranch southeast of town and is this week constructing a well pit and will install pumping machinery. Mr. Staples is a former well-known newspaper man, and conducted newspapers in various western cities. He is a firm disbeliever in race suicide, and last Sunday was presented by his wife with a fine baby girl. He contemplates many notable improvements and will make his ranch one of the show places of the county.
Ned Merritt is home from Mojave for a weeks' visit with relatives. Ned is engaged with the Southern Pacific engineering corps and is seeing to it that the Owens river aqueduct is constructed according to Hoyle.

Harold Moore of the Santa Fe passenger department was in town the first of the week. He is preparing for the summer opening of Tent City, which occurs next month. He reports considerable activity at San Diego and Coronado, and looks for a record season at Tent City.

Damon Snodgrass, Dan and John Williams are engaged in leveling forty acres of land in the west country, which will be planted to trees, corn and potatoes. The work is being done under the foremanship of Mr. Kellogg of the leveling force of the Los Alamitos sugar factory. Damon is also harvesting forty acres of barley hay, and states that a half of inch of rain upon his late sown crop will give him 100 tons of the finest hay in the country. The weather clerk will please take notice.
