MUNE WALNUTS
Ramsey was here from Whit-hursday looking up resist-ts and investigating the such has appeared in the or-prof. Ramsey found one tree one orchard and another in orchard which are so free as to be practically im-ons from these trees have invitation to consider in joint session with the directors certain matters pertaining to the welfare of the city in which both the chamber of commerce and the Ebell club are taking a lively interest. There were present Directors Mills, Weisel,Ross, Ahlborn and Dietrich, and the Ebell was represented by Mrs. Dyer, Mrs. Johnston and Mrs. McLauchlin, the latter being chosen to preside over the joint meeting.
The disgusting and disreputable bill board, which mars the appearance and injures the value of adjoining property, being at the same time of very doubtful benefit to the advertiser whose money supports the nuisance, was conceded by all present to be a fit subject for united and vigorous action by the two bodies, and this is to give fair warning to said bill board that its presence is objectionable. If it could just understand how the civic bodies feel about the matter, perhaps the bill board would retire in confusion—perhaps. But then it might not. And if it will not, what can be done about it? To this question no very satisfactory answer was arrived at, but steps were taken that it is believed will result in securing the desired information, and something will be done, because the civic section is going to see about that.
Uniform planting of trees along the streets of the city was proposed as an object to secure which united action should be taken. The city trustees will be asked to appoint a tree warden, giving him authority by ordinance to supervise the planting and care of trees along the streets, and naming certain varieties which only may be planted. It is expected that for a time at least there will be no salary for this officer, and the principal difficulty in the plan appears to be to find a person with the necessary qualifications who will accept the place and serve without pay. The low-strung wires of telephone and electric light and power systems are considered a serious menace to the tree plan, and the committee appointed to present these recommendations to the council will also ask that the wires be taken care

The low-strung wires of telephone and electric light and power systems are considered a serious menace to the tree plan, and the committee appointed to present these recomendations to the council will also ask that the wires be taken care

to avoid disfiguring the growing trees on their account.
The trustees were commended for
their recent action instructing property owners to destroy the weeds along the street. The cleaning-up
process, it was decided, ought to include the back yards, the rear alleys
and other unsightly places. An effort will be made to secure the adoption and uniform observance of a general cleaning-up day for the enitre city, as is done every year in Santa Ana, Orange, Huntington Beach
and other places where the spirit of civic pride flourishes. In order that
this work may be done prior to the next holiday which is Memorial Day,
the trustees will be asked to name Saturday, May 22, for the purpose,

Redondo Beach Boosters Will Be Here Monday
Edward C. Thomas, general agent of the Los Angeles and Redondo railway, was in town the first of the week, arranging for the approaching visit of a delegation of Redondo Beach chamber of commerce boosters, who will be here, two carloads of them, on Monday, May 17. They will arrive on the Santa Fe 2.52 p.m., and remain until 5.54, when they proceed to Santa Ana, where they will spend the night. They will be accompanied by the Redondo band of twenty pieces, which will give an open-air concert during their stay.
The party will make a tour of the kite-shape track, going to Corona, Riverside, Redlands and other places, and will proceed as far east as The Needles and north to Bakersfield. The purpose is to become acquainted with towns along the route, and to boost Redondo, which is one of the most attractive seaside resorts in Southern California.
Mr. Thomas is a well-known newspaper man, but has reformed and gone into railroading, where he is achieving a large measure of success. He says three and a half million dol-

This shows decrease of 40 children as compared to the number last year, inflict a decrease, as indicated in reports. The number of cen-sool children between 5 and 17 is 848, an increase of 109, inflict 107, as published last week. Errors crept in by reason of a sheet, which failed to figure totals, a recapitulation having necessarily hasty.

ORANGES GOING EAST
Gerald Sandiflands is shipping 20 carloads of Mediterranean Sweets from the Independent packing-house, and his force of packers will be busy this week and next filling eastern orders. Mr. Sandifands states this year's orange crop is the largest in the history of the state, and will exceed 32,250 carloads. Oranges have been going forward the past week at 200 cars daily, which overtops the record for this season of the year. An active demand has existed during the season for oranges, despite the fact that f.o.b. orders have been few. While the crop has been unusually heavy, he looks for a light crop next year, inasmuch as trees are not blooming as heavily as usual. This he finds is especially true as regards Valencias.
Fritz Martin arrived from Arizona yesterday to attend the funeral of his mohter.
