A NATION-WIDE MOVEMENT. INCREASE OF WOOD PRESERVATIVES ENGAGING ATTENTION National Government and Public and Private Corporations Finding Use of Creosote Satisfactory Method of Preserving Telephone Poles, Etc. An increase from three and one-half million gallons of the oil of coal tar, or creosote, as it is popularly known, imported into the city of New York in 1904, to an amount estimated to be almost twenty-five million gallons last year, is one of the indications pointing to the progress of the nation-wide movement for the conservation of forest resources. It is creosote which the government and scores of corporations and private wood users have found to be one of the most satisfactory preservatives of railroad ties, mine props, telephone and telegraph poles, fence posts, and for timbers used for other commercial purposes. Lengthening the life of timber in use means the lessening of the drain on the country's forests, and what is more important to the average business man, it means the saving of thousands of dollars annually spent for the labor of the frequent renewals made necessary when untreated timber is used. Ten years ago the strongest advocates of the creosoting method of preserving wood could scarcely have hoped for the present advanced state of this industry. Creosoting is becoming the acknowledged standard means of increasing the life of timbers. Formerly the production of creosote, from both coal tar and wood tar, far exceeded any demand for wood treating purposes. However, the number of wood-preserving plants has grown so rapidly within the last four years that this country is not now able to supply its own demand for coal tar creosote. A brief study of the importation STUDY OF THE EUCALYPTIC INVESTIGATING PRACTICAL USE OF PLANTING IN SOUTHERN TEXAS Importance of Its Culture from Commercial Standpoint in California Arouses General Interest—On the Largest and Rapid Growth Albuquerque, Feb. 17.—Plant being made to have a special undertaken by a representative of the United States forest service the near future to determine feasibility of the culture of the calyptus tree in the lower Rio Grande valley and along the Gulf of Texas. The importance of eucalyptus culture from a commercial stand in California has within the past months 'aroused general interest throughout the country concerning these rapid growing trees and district office of the forest service at Albuquerque receives almost inquiries as to the feasibility of planting of eucalyptus in the west, particularly in the state Texas. Eucalypts are native to the region of Australia and Tasmania where at least 160 distinct species are recognized. They were introduced into California about 1850 and planted near San Francisco for mental purposes. The extreme rapid growth of certain species, value for fuel, lumber, and products have resulted in the taking of extensive investigationcerning the habits of these trees their commercial uses and positions. Fully 100 species have been introduced into the United States. Among the most important species at present planted in this county blue gum, sugar gum, gray gum gum and Manna gum. Blue gum is one of the largest most rapid growing trees in the hoped for the present advanced state of this industry. A brief study of the importation columns of the trade journals shows the effect of the growth of the wood preservation industry. In the whole year of 1904 the New York imports amounted to only 3,500,000 gallons. By the end of 1907, the importation had increased to 17,500,000 gallons, while for the present year conservative estimates place the imported coal tar creosote at between 22 to 25 million gallons. The year has started most auspiciously; during a five-weeks' period in December and January the importation through New York alone was 15,000 tons, giving a weekly average of 3000 tons or 68,000 gallons. It is significant that during this same period the importation of related by-products from coal kept pace with that of creosote. Ammonium carbonate, chloride, sulphate, and "sal ammoniac" entered to the amount of 104,227,1260 and 400 tons respectively. If these had been all made into the sulphate, the equivalent product would have been 460 tons per week. The estimated ratio of twenty pounds of sulphate to one and one-half gallons of the creosote oil would make an equivalent production of 68,000 gallons of creosote. This is not far different from the 68,000 gallons which were really imported. Since these ammonia products and creosote are being imported in this relation, it is plainly evident that the production of creosote is not alone deficient, but also coal tar products in general. The production of creosote in this country will, in all probability, continue to be far less than the consumption. The wood preservation industry has been in its infancy only, and enormous demands may be expected in the future. The coke, and consequently the coal tar industries, have until recently been at their best but even at their best the supply of by-products has run short. On this account, we should turn to other sources to supply the increasing demand for creosote preservatives. A great help may be eventually afforded by the increasing use of wood tar creosote which has not been in high favor in the past. It is gratifying to note that within the last few years some of the more important rapid growth of certain species, value for fuel, lumber, and products have resulted in the taking of extensive investigationcerning the habits of these trees their commercial uses and positions. Fully 100 species have been introduced into the United States. Among the most important states planted in this county blue gum, sugar gum, gray gum and Manna gum. Blue gum is one of the largest most rapid growing trees in the In California under favorable conditions trees have attained a height 175 feet and a diameter of 5 feet 25 years while in exceptional instances individual trees have reached height of 125 feet and a diameter three feet in nine years. Spray from the stumps of eucalyptus frequently reach 3 inches in order and 35 feet in height in months. The wood of blue gum is primarily valuable for fuel and lumber although it finds numerous other uses. Lyptus oil, a drug of considerable mercial importance, is distilled on leaves. Sugar gum is also a very grower but like blue gum, will tolerate much frost. Red gum gray gum while possibly a little warmer in growth than those are drought and frost resistant. Are being planted extensively to the durability of their timber contact with the soil and its commercial uses. Both red gum gray gum are valuable for piles posts and poles while the woody red gum is said to be considered excellent substitute for mahona Manna gum is also fairly frost resistant and is a rapid grower. Wood, however, is principally blee for fuel. The eucalypts are adapted to tropical climate and the limits in which they may be planted commercial purposes in this country may be broadly defined as that led by the frost line. They are therefore adapted for planting in warmer portions of California and parts of Southern Arizona and as. It is not likely that they be grown with any degree of sun in New Mexico. Few of the lyptus can survive a temperature er than 20 deg. Fahrenheit, and of them a temperature less than deg. Fahrenheit. Blue gum and gar gum may be planted when temperature does not fall below deg. and 28 deg. Fahrenheit relatively, while red gum has been able to stand a drop to 12 deg. There is considerable area hot in southern Texas where it is likely that the more hardy of these pected in the future. It is gratifying to note that within the last few years some of the more important wood distillers have been turning into a profit those oils and tars which were formerly run to waste. The demand for these products is increasing, and this recovered by-product has been asserted to be not only a revenue for the producer but also a valuable preservative for the treatment of structural timber. LICENSE FOR FISHERS Sacramento, March 4.—The assembly passed the senate bill, which provides that all citizens of the United States engaged in fishing for profit in California must pay a yearly license of $2.50, while aliens must pay $10 a year. The bill affects only the market fishermen, and the higher license fee will apply principally to Japanese, Italians, Chinese and Greeks. A Santa Ana man stole Judge Towner's automobile one night last week and later returned, awakened the judge and asked for the loan of the crank, being unable to start the machine without it. After stealing the auto the thief went to the residence of Max Reinhaus, sometime after midnight, and asked for the crank of his machine. Mr. Reinhaus, suspecting the thief, telephoned the officers, and the man was later arrested. He is in jail on a felony charge. Women always have plenty of work on wash-day. Why not get a water-power washing machine to do some of it. Beebe-Weisel Co.
