BEET SUGAR IN CALIFORNIA
INDUSTRY'S NOTABLE PROGRESS DURING RECENT YEARS
Advantages Over Other States Offered by Fertile Valleys of Coast—Features of Industry in State—Produced at Different Times of Season
A bulletin issued by the department of agriculture at Washington, upon the progress of the beet-sugar industry in the United States has been received at this office, and proves to be a very interesting volume. In speaking of the culture of the beet in California the report says: The beet-sugar industry has been established in California longer than in any other state in the union. At present there are 8 factories operating: At Alvarado, Los Alamitos, Spreckels, Betteravia, Chino, Oxnard, Visalia and Hamilton City. There is a large factory at Watsonville, belonging to the Spreckels sugar company, which has not been in operation for several years. The one owned by this company at Spreckels is the largest, but one, in the world. This company has devoted its energies to developing beet production for this factory, whose capacity is 3000 tons of beets per day.
Another factory located at Crockett, belonging to the California beet and Hawaiian sugar and refining company, operated several years as a beet-sugar factory, when it abandoned production and devoted its energies entirely to refining. Altogether 10 factories have been installed in the state.
Originally most sugar beets were produced in California by rainfall. Beets can be planted much earlier as a rule than in most sections. Sufficient moisture was secured during the rainy season of the winter. The older factories were principally on the coast side. The rain falling in the winter was augmented by subirers. The beets grown weaker quality. The factory began September 9 and closed November LOS ALAMITOS. The beet-sugar factory, situated about south from Los Angeles plain, is located near the beets furnished for it area its immediate vicinity and Anaheim. This factory was only a 400-ton plant. At the cropping depended upon the uration of the soil in winemented by occasional rain the growing season. This has been improved by irrigation a system of deep wells. Last few years the capacity plant has been practically For several reasons it has of the most successful ente sugar production on the co delivered to this factory and highest in sugar and purity in the United States, or in so far as I have record.
(1907) the average for campaign was: Sugar, 19.3 with an average purity of
Following is an account of experimental work by a big ing company, which shows opment of the district, esp irrigation, and the draining to remove the alkali and e ters from the overflow of or excessive rain:

Originally most sugar beets were produced in California by rainfall. Beets can be planted much earlier as a rule than in most sections. Sufficient moisture was secured during the rainy season of the winter. The older factories were principally on the coast side. The rain falling in the winter was augmented by subirrigation or underground seepage of water from the mountains to the sea. Throughout these coast valleys the crops have been materially increased by installing deep wells.
The recently built factories of the state are largely dependent upon irrigation from the Sacramento and other inland rivers.
In beet cropping there are some unique features in California. Beets can be planted and produced in different valleys at various times of the season. This lengthens the factory campaigns in some cases to six months. The fact that rain falls in the winter, saturating the soil, while there is unbroken sunshine the rest of the year, gives ideal conditions. The California soil is very retentive of moisture. Conditions are such that beets grown in this state are very high in quality and purity.
The principal beet sections are in the San Joaquin and Sacramento valleys, and the coast region from Mendocino to Chino. In this coast region is the wonderful Salinas valley, 15 miles wide, estimated to contain 700,000 acres, 200,000 acres of which are under cultivation.
In the state two new factories were built last year, and one new one is under construction for the campaign of 1909. A number of others are under contemplation.
ALVARADO.—Aside from the heavy rainfall of the winter, which retarded planting to some extent, normal conditions existed in the beet-growing districts adjacent to the Alvarado factory. The factory here is the oldest in operation in the United States. Sugar has been produced at this point regularly for twenty-eight years. The campaign opened September 26 and closed December 9.
BETTERAVIA.—At the Betteravia factory quite a number of improvements were made. Its capacity was largely increased. In this district a fine system of irrigation has been installed. Beets of superior quality and purity are the rule. Fair conditions existed throughout the season. Slicing began the middle of July.
CHINO.—The rainfall of winter in and around the Chino factory was extended planting.

After land may be irrigated and cultivation as any other land irrigation water is applied a from artesian wells, the drained tem permits the surplus to flow and the land is found to be tile and productive. The for tiling and labor is said from $60 to $70 per acre."
In this district a new harvesting beets was in use the season. It was a comb topper, puller, and cleaner, plement is propelled by two It gave excellent results in city. The yield of beets was than usual. The locality receives an excess of rain in but this occurred in 1907, added the general average quality for this, the beets would have shown over 20 per cent and 85 of purity. The factory slicing beets August 15 and November 25.
OXNARD.—The Oxnard farm from every standpoint is a factory in the United States a capacity of 2000 tons, and a sufficient supply of beets to make a long campaign. They are of high quality and put the average tonnage per acre This acreage and quality benefits both the farmers' factory. The factory has made a high record from the begin-1907 climatic conditions we formly good, except that he in the early season retarding and early work. The produced during the past season of unusually high quality.
Factory started slicing August closed November 9.
SPRECKELS.—The Spreckels factory is the most remarkable respects of any in the principally on account of its development of all condition have to do with its wonder It has capacity of 3000 tons daily. It is located in one o gest and most fertile valley coast side of California. It means, more than any influencing and stimulating provement of conditions in agricultural tract. It consists 000,000 gallons of water hours. Water for irrigation ken from the river by two gal pumps, having capacities 000,000 gallons in twenty-four each being operated by two tors. This water is forced a mile and a half of 32-inch-
BETTERAVIA.—At the Betteravia factory quite a number of improvements were made. Its capacity was largely increased. In this district a fine system of irrigation has been installed. Beets of superior quality and purity are the rule. Fair conditions existed throughout the season. Slicing began the middle of July.
CHINO.—The rainfall of winter in and around the Chino factory was quite heavy. This retarded planting somewhat. The season throughout the rest of the year was quite favorable. The company now owns 5000 acres, which very materially promotes a supply of beets. This land has been improved by drainage to remove the excess of rainfall. This expedites preparation of the seed bed at the right time. The average yield of beets was fairly good. The factory began slicing August 26 and closed October 21.
HAMILTON CITY.—The Hamilton City factory, which made its second campaign in 1907, is a 700-ton plant. This factory was built two years ago in a new district, and it illustrates the wonderful development influence of a beet-sugar plant. The management of this factory conducts its affairs along progressive lines. Much of the ground is broken up by large traction plows. One large traction plow was in use this year which is said to cut 25 furrows at once. Many improvements to promote the work of the beet production and the manufacture of sugar were installed during the year. A pontoon bridge was built across the river in order to develop a large territory on the other side for beet and general crop production. This facilitated delivery to the factory. The large traction engine is used to deliver beets to the factory, propelling long trains of wagons. The management of the factory has procured a large number of Japanese laborers. Country dumps were installed to accommodate the farm-

The beets grown were of high quality. The factory began slicing the crop in October 9 and closed Nov. 9.
CALAMITOS.—The Los Alamitos factory, situated about 30 miles from Los Angeles on a flat location near the coast. Most residents are grown in adjacent vicinity and around this factory was original cotton plant. At the beginning, it depended upon the full saturation of the soil in winter supplement by occasional rains during spring season. This condition has improved by irrigation from deep wells. During the last years the capacity of the farm has been practically doubled. Several reasons it has been one most successful enterprises in production on the coast. Beets are to this factory average the main sugar and purity of any United States, or in the world, as I have record. Last year the average for the entire farm was: Sugar, 19.3 per cent average purity of 84.8.
Beginning is an account of the external work by a big land-hold company, which shows the development of the district, especially in the drainage of land near the alkali and excess water in the overflow of irrigation drain rain:
Mixby Land company last season in a 40-acre experimental plat draining and this year it will used to 160 acres of alkali which formerly was in pasture, considered unfit for cultivation. The method of operation is, affording the tiles, to close the outflow of the land thoroughly, and up and let the water which came alkaline drain off; this it repeats time after time excess of alkali in the soil removed. After this the water is applied afterwards in wells, the drainage systems the surplus to drain off and is found to be very ferruginous. The total cost and labor is said to be line of said lot thirty-seven, 132.25 feet to the northeast corner of said lot thirty-seven, thence southerly along the east line of said lot thirty-seven, nine (9) feet, to a point, thence in a westerly direction, on a line parallel with the north line of said lot thirty-seven 132.25 feet to the west line of said lot, and thence in a northerly direction along the west line of said lot, nine (9) feet to the point of beginning.
That the exterior boundaries of the district of lands established, and declared by said resolution to be affected and benefited by said work or improvement, and to be assessed to pay the damages, costs and expenses thereof, are described as follows:
Beginning at the southwest corner of Original Building Lot thirty-seven (37) as shown on a map recorded in Book 4 of Deeds, at pages 629 and 630, records of Los Angeles County, California, thence in a northerly direction along the westerly line of Building Lots thirty-three and thirty-seven, 268 feet to the northwest corner of Building Lot thirty-three, thence in an easterly direction along the northerly line of Building Lot thirty-three, 131.45 feet, thence southerly, and parallel with the easterly line of Building Lot thirty-three, 181.5 feet to a point in the northerly line of Building Lot thirty-seven, thence easterly along the northerly line of Building Lot thirty-seven, eight-tenths of a foot, thence southerly and parallel with the easterly line of Building Lot thirty-seven, 181.5 feet to a point in the southerly line of Building Lot thirty-seven, thence westerly along the southerly line of Building Lot thirty-seven, 132.25 feet to the point of beginning, excepting therefrom the lands hereinbefore described as the lands to be taken for opening and extending said alley.
Reference is hereby made to said resolution of Intention for further particulars.
