On Saturday they attended the annual picnic of the Livingston county (Ill.,) association at East-lake park. Bert Simpson, Albert Williams and A. T. Wallop left on Saturday for Montana. Messrs. Simpson and Wallop will return by fall. Across Mr. Simpson's ranch runs a creek sixty feet wide, having a fall of 62 feet to the mile, which is filled with trout, and Mr. Wallop will make an effort to establish a new Montana record. Mrs. C. S. Welton, aged 78 years, mother of City Trustee Welton of Fullerton, and a well-known resident of that place, died at her home on Saturday. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church on Monday morning, after which the body was taken to Los Angeles for interment in Evergreen cemetery. Harold Moore, traveling passenger agent of the Santa Fe, was in the city on Friday. He has recently returned from a visit east and reports railroad business prospering in all directions. Mr. Moore is interested in a gold mine at Searchlgiht, Nev., which has a shaft down 275 feet, and gives promise of developing into a mine of great richness. W. H. Averell, superintendent of Los Angeles division of the Southern Pacific, was in town a day or two ago inspecting his company's affairs. Mr. Averell is a nephew of E. H. Harriman. He found Agent Pickering on deck, reporting ready to gobble up any business that might come his way. Miss McNeil, teacher of drawing in the city schools, was pleasantly remembered on the occasion of her birthday on Monday by pupils presenting her with gifts in honor of the happy event. In the primary grade at the central school she was made the recipient of fruits and flowers from the children under her care. In honor of her twelfth birthday anniversary Ruth Lemon entertained twenty of her friends Saturday afternoon at the home of her parents on North Los Angeles strett. Games of various description were engaged in by the jolly guests; the most favorite game being a fishing expedition when each individual fished, all succeeding in "landing" a surprise package. A birthday cake surrounded by twelve green and yellow candles graced the center of the dining table. Green and yellow was chosen as the color scheme, and was carried out with the decorations, refreshments and place cards. The invited list included Lillian Wippermann, Frances Backs, Ruth Grim, Jessie Boyd, Lois Dyer, Beryle Kennedy, Lois and Grace Short, Edith Simpson, Ida Heying, Hazel Rose, Lena Spake; Hazel Kemp, Adela Huch, Ida Wood, Thelma Gade, Ursala North, Miss Edith DuBois of Anaheim, Myrtle Courtwright and Marie Harris of Santa Ana.
