THE CARNIVAL OF PRODUCTS UNIQUE EXHIBITION TO BE HELD AT SANTA ANA Three Days of Carnival Celebration — Magnificent Street Parade Each Day—Exciting Charlet Races In Afternoon—Beautiful Queen of the Carnival and Her Court. The Orange County Carnival of Products, to be held at Santa Ana, Cal., Oct. 15-16-17, promises to be the most unique and interesting exhibition of that character ever witnessed in Southern California. It is doubtful, in fact, if any place in the world has ever attempted a display of its attractions and resources in quite the thorough and novel manner which will be employed in this event. There have been agricultural and horticultural exhibits, coupled with horse races; mechanical displays and institutes and floral festivals which have been great successes in their individual lines but the Orange County Carnival of Products will be a combination of all these features, together with athletic sports, theaters, balloon ascensions, charlot racing, etc., etc., thus comprising a program for three days, which insures ample entertainment at all hours of the day and evening for everybody. At eleven o'clock of each day there will be a magnificent street parade, free to everybody. On Thursday, Oct. 15, this parade will consist of a display of products of this wonderfully fertile county, artistically presented in floats of varied designs, all combining to form a spectacle rarely if ever equaled in this line. On Thursday, Oct. 15, this parade will consist of a display of products of this wonderfully fertile county, artistically presented in floats of varied designs, all combining to form a spectacle rarely if ever equaled in this line. Friday's parade will present the commercial and industrial industries of the county, including displays by the two great sugar factories and all the rest of the many manufacturing concerns. On Saturday will be presented a floral parade, in which no exhibit will be allowed to participate which is not an artistic floral creation. Cash prizes are offered for the best displays in this parade, including schools, tallyhos, automobiles, single and double carriages and bicycles. Exciting chariot races, in addition to a regular race program, have been arranged for the afternoons at the driving park. Public dances will be open afternoon and evening, and on Saturday evening the events will close with a Carnival Masque ball. One of the most attractive features will be the appearance of the beautiful Queen of the Carnival, who will lead all parades in her state carriage of gold, attended by her court of thirteen maids of honor, pages footmen, etc. On Wednesday evening, at the Grand opera-house, will occur the coronation exercises, a most beautiful and spectacular affair, at which time the queen will be crowned and the keys of the city will be tendered to her majesty by Mayor John McFadden. Space will not permit anything like a detailed description of the multitude of attractions of the carnival, but enough has been stated to show that it will be an extraordinary affair and well worth a visit. A special rate of 75 cents for the round trip from Los Angeles to Santa Ana has been secured, $1.00 from Pasadena, and one and one-third fare from all other points. BOARD OF SUPERVISORS The supervisors were in session on Tuesday auditing bills and transacting other important business. The printing of the great register indices was awarded to the Santa Ana Register company for three cents per name. On motion of Supervisor Moore the board arranged as a committee of the whole to go to Bay City to investigate the proposition to make certain road improvements in that neighborhood, and will meet with P. A. Stanton for that purpose. Advocates of the plan to have placed on the general election ticket the proposition to make mandatory the primary election law for this county appeared before the board and asked for an extension of time to enable them to secure the required number of signatures to the petition. As there are some six hundred names short, and the time is pressing, the supervisors could not see their way to granting the request. There will therefore be no vote on mandatory primaries in Orange county at next month's election. GREEN FRUITS BREAK RECORDS The green fruit shipping season of 1908 is breaking all records and is a source of much surprise and pleasure to growers, shippers and the railway carriers. Up to the beginning of the week 900 carloads of green fruit including grapes, had been shipped out of California for the season, and before it closes the Southern Pacific and Santa Fe freight traffic officials believe the number will reach 1200, or about 500 more than any season has had to its credit in the past. The shippers are getting an average of $1200 gross per car. Out of this sum they have to pay freight and refrig-erating charges amounting to $400. BEAUMONT Despite the drawbacks of rainy weather the Beaumont land and water company conducted two homeseekers excursions to Beaumont and made sales of apple lands aggregating $4850 last week. Most of the buyers are preparing to plant apple lands this fall and it is estimated that a total of over 20,000 apple trees will be set in the next two months. The apple development presages a heavy increase in the present yearly output of $80,000 and has already resulted in plans being aid for the erection of a packing house combined with a cider and vinegar factory. The increasing apple output has cut into the demand for eastern and Watsonville fruit, and the fact that the Beaumont products bring 25 per cent better prices on account of flavor and size is a sound reason for recent extentive acquirement of lands by experienced growers from the east and north. The present planted area exceeds 200 acres and the average yield from full grown trees is said to be over 20 tons. The trees begin to bear at three years, and unlike many other fruits, steadily increase in vitality and yielding power for half a century. Late crop estimates on apples show a yield 10 per cent better than last season, this being especially true of Winesaps and Rhode Island Reds, two varieties that command the highest price. Pear drying is at its height and an area 500 square feet is being devoted to curing this fruit. The average F. J. CHENEY & CO., Toledo, O. SCHOOL CHILDREN EARN MONEY That the school children of Santa Ana did not spend their vacations in idleness is evidenced by a report made by Superintendent Cranston of the public schools. The gross earnings of the students of the high school and upper grades were $17,-939.90. Professor Cranston observed during the vacation, and especially during th fruit season, that hundreds of young people were going out into the countrry early in the morning and returning late at night, and he wondered how much these boys and girls had made between the closing and opening of school. To ascertain this he last week instructed the teachers to report the total earnings of their pupils. The last of the reports was made on Monday. The 210 high school students earned $10,091.30, Ray Catland leading with a report of $206. At Central grammar $3381.80 was reported in the firth, sixth, seventh Election Nov.
