SELINGER MAKES THE TEAM
Local Riffleman wins Place Among Marksmen Who Will Represent State at Ohio Shoot—Gets His Picture In the Paper
Lieut. John Selinger was on Sunday selected as a member of the state team of riflemen who will go to Camp Perry, Ohio, to represent California in the international shoot the latter part of this month. Out of 31 men competing Selinger stood tenth, the man ahead of him leading him by a single point. The shoot occurred at the range at East Lake park during several days the past week, and the state team was not selected until after the elimination of eleven low men on Friday.
Selinger was a member of the state team last year. Himself one of the best riflemen in the state, he laughingly admitted on his return that the army and navy as well as eastern cracks were so far ahead of western marksmen that there "was nothing to the international shoot." The easterners were outfitted with latest apparatus, and coached one another while watching the scoreboard through strong glasses. The interstate shoot was won by the navy team, who later defeated all comers in the international shoot held in Canada.
The westerners will go east better equipped than ever to make a showing against men who hold world's records as riflemen. They leave on the 16th and will be absent several weeks.
Selinger's picture was printed in one of the Los Angeles papers, showing a snapshot of the rifleman in the act of this reservoir will be to this report deals with estimates concerning the company from day of night runs.

Reservoir at Olive
Engineer H. C. Kellogg, builder of the Yorba reservoir, has signed a contract with the Santa Ana Valley Irrigation company for constructing a reservoir in the Olive foothills. Mr. Kellogg has machinery on the ground and active work will begin this week.
This reservoir is to be built for the purpose of holding a night's run of water and more so that the irrigators may have day water.
The dam will be a hydraulic filled dam such as was used in making the Yorba reservoir for the Anaheim Union Water Co. Water will be used to wash the dirt on to the dam, where it settles and forms a solid core.
The reservoir will cover about three acres of ground, and will hold twelve hours' run of twenty or twenty-five heads of water. With this capacity there will be no difficulty in converting as much of the summer to day runs as is desired. The reservoir is to be constructed at Olive, on property, part of which was bought from the Olive Milling Co., and part of which the water company owned.
The S.A.V.I. Co. has a report from Engineer Kellogg showing the value

Tells of Experiences on Trip to Elsinore Springs—Meets Conductor Who Knows Less Than the Ordinary Run of Railroad Conductors
ELSINORE, CAL., Aug. 8, '08.
EDITOR GAZETTE.—“Where is my Wandering Boy Tonight?” Why, he is up here in Elsinore. Well, you see, its this way. I had a chance to get away from business cares for a week, and I had an invitation from Capt. Barr to come and visit him up here. I took the 8:18 a.m. Santa Fe train leaving Anaheim. As I got aboard I ran into our old friend, C. L. Metzgar, and he pulled out blue prints and a whole lot of mining papers and wanted to sell me about a million shares in his mines.
I asked the conductor of this train, 1244, (he is evidently employed only to take up tickets and not answer questions) how long the wait was at Riverside before taking the train for Elsinore. He bit it off short and informed me that “his train would stop long enough so that we could get off.” I was glad to know this, because I didn’t want to ride on his old train any more anyway. Well, my friend Metzgar and I talked about Southern California until he finally made up his mind to get off at Arlington, and got ready to leave me; but we had already passed Arlington, so he gets another ride for his money, from Riverside back to Arlington. Riverside has rather a neat little station in front of which is a large canal of water which looks good

Truth, I believe my faculties have been the test of time better than your or how could you have written it was I who touched a match to patent (?) oil burner of our balloon? Well, to make a long story short, little reminiscence has rather named my heart. I should like very well to run down to Anaheim for a talk over the old times with you perhaps I shall find some way by which I can. With kindest regards to and yours, sincerely,
FRED J. FISCHER.

was glad to know this, because I didn't want to ride on his old train any more anyway. Well, my friend Metzgar and I talked about Southern California until he finally made up his mind to get off at Arlington, and got ready to leave me; but we had already passed Arlington, so he gets another ride for his money, from Riverside back to Arlington. Riverside has rather a neat little station in front of which is a large canal of water which looks good to a Californian. As I had never been in Riverside before everything was new to me.
Among other things was a man with a heavy suit case in his hand weighing himself on the depot scales. He caught my smile, and then said he guessed he was getting awful heavy. When he put his suit case aside he lost about twenty pounds. As I got aboard the Elsinore train the brakeman informed me that if I took the last car I would get to Elsinore, as that was the Elsinore car. The train only had three cars and an engine, so I did as he told me and wondered where the rest of that train was going. At Highgrove they dropped our car, and pretty soon another engine, maybe it was the same engine (all engines look alike to me) came along and took us as far as Perris. Then that engine dropped us again. The sun beats right down in the middle at Perris; then a fellow who never drinks anything stronger than tea, with a gait of "half-seas-over," woke up and wanted to know where the conductor was, but there wasn't any conductor, just our lone car out on the blistering desert—then our passenger took another drink and gave it up.
On arriving at Elsinore I hunted up Mr. Barr. He is certainly comfortably situated. His residence is about three blocks from the depot, and being on a hill, overlooks the town and lake. This is the "simple life" sure enough. The house is surrounded by all kinds of large trees. Mr. Barr is cook and everything. Everything tastes of sulphur—hot sulphur, cold sulphur—tea and coffee has a wrestling match as to whether its tea or sulphur after it is cooked.

Two years ago, when the question first taken up, a majority frontage of the district here given was secured, the exception of a few outlying blocks. But it is now believed will be willing to have. No trouble is apprehended in doing property owners in the business center to sign, as the entire front-signed up in the initial attempt to two years ago.
However if outlying property-owners desire to sign, the work of paving the business center will be immediately done up and pushed to completion. Business men are a unit for paving wide-awake property-owners have pressed a willingness not only to but to assist in every manner in doing the good work along. The result it is said, will be about 13 cents foot.

At the head of each office there will be a district forester and an assistant district forester. Under these will be experts in charge of the various lines of work. A chief of grazing will have charge of range matters. A chief of products will handle the preservative treatment of timber and strength tests and study market conditions. The office of lands deals with questions involving the validity of claims asserted under the public land laws; applications for special use of the resources of the national forests: changes in boundaries of forests, and the examination of lands applied for under the Act of June 11, 1906, for agricultural settlement.
The forest service, however, neverasses on the titles themselves. That is entirely a matter for the general land office to decide. In the case of applications for homesteads under the Act of June 11, 1906, the forest service is called upon to decide whether the land is in fact more valuable for agriculture than for timber, and if it is, to recommend its listing as open to entry and patent. In the case of claims the service ascertaints whether any facts exist which seem to show that the claim is not a legal one, in order that national forest land may not be unlawfully taken up. But it rests always with the land office of the Interior department to decide whether the title should or should not be granted. The branch of lords in the district forest service organization does not mean any new assumption of land business.
There will also be in such district a chief of silviculture, who will have charge of timber sales, planting and silvical experiments, and a chief of operation. The latter will supervise an engineer in charge; the accounts of the district, including receipts, disbursements, and bookkeeping, which will be directly supervised by an expert accountant; and the routine business of the district.
In each of the lines of work the management will be in the hands of a man who is a specialist and who has had thorough experience both in the west and in Washington. The foresters and clerks at each district headquarters will number about fifty.
The establishment of these field districts will bring the service into more immediate touch with the public. It is merely the completion of the movement, started sometime ago, to have the forests administered as far as possible by men actually on the ground.
The change will not affect the investigative work of the service, which will center, as hitherto, in Washington. Mr. Pluchot is expected soon to name the men who will fill the various positions.
