While Gill had refused to take the nomination up to a short while before the assembling of the convention, he was named by acclamation. A number of Riverside republicans accompanied Gill. They endorsed his nomination, and said Estudillo would be badly whipped in his own county. "We want 500 majority for Gill in Orange county," said one of these republicans. "If the election were held this week," replied a prominent Orange county republican, "Gill would have 1000 majority." W. T. Newland of Huntington Beach was chosen temporary chairman and J. L. Campbell of Riverside secretary. One of the incidents of the morning session which caused considerable mirth was the response of Lafayette Gill to the statement of W. T. Newland, that he was unacquainted with the Riverside members and therefore did not wish to appoint the committees without time to confer with delegates. Mr. Gill said that at the recent republican convention in Riverside this did not embarrass the chairman, for he simply put his hand into his inside coat pocket and produced a typewritten copy of the membership of the different committees. After a brief recess the following committees were announced: Resolutions—Lafayette Gill of Riverside, L. M. Hopper and H. C. Head of Santa Ana. Credentials—C. E. Campbell is in town this week from Beatty, Nev., where his company, the Beatty Milling, Mining and Reduction company, is erecting a ten-stamp mill. Machinery is all on the ground and the mill will be in operation Sept. 1st. The company has issued 100,000 shares of stock, at a par value of $1 per share, and so large is the volume of ore offered for reduction by various mines at Beatty that it has been deemed advisable to increase the mine to twenty stamps. Twenty thousand shares of stock will be offered citizens of Anaheim and vicinity at 75 cents per share. Mr. Campbell left yesterday, in company of Charles E. Jones of this city, for Beatty, where the latter will personally inspect the milling proposition and make report on his return the latter part of the week. Mr. Jones is a well-known mining and milling authority of large experience, and it will be on his judgment that our people will be asked to make investments in the enterprise. Mr. Campbell says the net profits of his ten-stamp mill will be $120 per day, and that he has agreements from one of the largest mines at Beatty to mill ore in sufficient quality to keep the mill busy for 18 months. Other miners having lesser quantities of ore for reduction are anxious to make contracts for milling, and the outlook is unusually bright. Profits from the mill will be immediate. It is different in this respect from mining ventures, in which investors must wait a term of years before reaping benefits. Mr. Campbell will be here with Mr. Jones probably on Saturday, and will call upon intending investors and further explain the details of his proposition. Ball bearing wringers, easy to turn. Grand Canyon Game Preserve The president has signed a proclamation adding approximately 942,400 (from lands already included in Grand Canyon national forest) to Grand Canyon game preserve. The game preserve, as previously finished, included that portion of Grand Canyon national forest lying off the Grand Canyon, while the proclamation includes all of that portion of the forest lying south of the Grand Canyon except the southwest part of the forest lying on the west side of Cataract canyon and south of township line between Townships 32 north. The extension of the game preserve to include the land south of the Grand Canyon is considered imperative in order to protect the game now in existence. There are a few deer, wild turkeys, and grouse, and occasional small bunches of antelope in the vicinity of Cataract canyon. This country is gradually becoming more and more accessible to hunters.
