HERRIN'S WILD CRY FOR HELP
McMuffan and Morrison Hear, and County Committee Refuses to Calf Primaries—Appointed Delegates Programed for Railroad
By a vote of 19 to 14 the republican county central committee on Saturday afternoon voted down a resolution demanding that the delegates appointed to state and congressional conventions tender their resignations, so that primaries might be called and a county convention held and delegates selected free from the collar of the railroad machine. Twenty members of the committee had affixed their signatures to a demand that these appointed delegates resign, but three of them failed to appear at Saturday's meeting and as many more "renigged." Among those voting with the push was Po Lil Joe Burke, who, while not a member of the committee, was admitted to vote at the meeting on a proxy of George Bird, the Olinda man who stampeded to Estudillo at the Riverside convention.
On the call for the meeting being proof that what had been done committee could not be undo Attorney Spencer spoke to that quite a number of Santa Ana people whom he met in Anaheim to think there was no use in primary.
J. S. Howard said that he the appointment of delegate after conversing with member party in his precinct and finding nearly all in favor of appointing gates, he felt constrained to the action of the committee.
Tom Talbert of Huntington said his precinct favored cleanliness in support of this he cited the Huntington Beach delegation senatorial convention at Raleigh who "had stayed by what he was clean." in voting against Estudillo. However he was majority and cast his vote accrual.
Supervisor Moore of West spoke strongly in favor of the primaries, and stated that seen hundreds of republicans were of his opinion. A roll call was asked for on Dr. Ball's resolution the count showed fourteen nineteen against and the result was accordingly declared lost.
Secretary Ulm introduced motion endorsing Smith for congress instructing delegates to use able means to secure his nomination. McMullan vigorously opposed motion as a reflection upon

On the call for the meeting being read, demanding that the appointed delegates resign, Morrison made a spiel in behalf of their retention as delegates. Orders had come to him from railroad headquarters in Los Angeles to hold the delegates at all hazards, and in a weak and faltering way he argued that they should not be disturbed, inasmuch as their credentials had been already made out and had been forwarded to Herrin's state committee. Morrison produced a copy of a Santa Ana paper of eight years ago and since suspended publication, in support of his position, the paper saying delegates to state and congressional conventions were appointed in that year.
Secretary Ulm of the committee proved by the minutes of the meeting in 1900 that no such action had been taken, and that delegates were regularly elected by county convention.
Dr. Ball offered the following resolution:
"Whereas, We the republican county central committee of Orange county by a meeting of the said committee held July 10, 1908, appointed fourteen delegates to the congressional convention of the eighth congressional district, and thirteen delegates to the state convention, and
Whereas, There is general dissatisfaction with such appointment of delegates, and a strong demand by a large number of republican voters in the county that said delegates be selected through primaries and a convention held for that purpose, and
Whereas, This committee is convinced that the future harmony and interests of the republican party in this county will be best conserved by the calling of such primaries and the election of delegates by a county convention; now therefore be it
Resolved, That the said delegates to such congressional and state conventions so appointed be and they are hereby respectfully requested to resign their positions, and upon the chairman and the secretary of this committee be and they are hereby authorized and directed to call for a republican pri-"
That New Tax Law
Occasionally one comes across newspapers friendly to corporations, favorable reference to posed new tax law, which willmitted to voters for ratification November election. The law comes up as an amendment constitution, and is known as Constitutional Amendment No. a railroad measure, and ought defeated. Upon its surface innocent enough, and argue being made in railroad paper support.
The classes of property enumerated in the amended state taxation only, and there are to be levied upon their gross earnings include the following:
1. Railroads, including streets, four per cent on grosses.
2. Sleeping car and other panies, three per cent on grosses.
3. Express companies, two on gross earnings.
4. Telegraph and telephone panies, three and one-half

"Resolved, That the said delegates to such congressional and state conventions so appointed be and they are hereby respectfully requested to resign their positions, and upon the chairman and the secretary of this committee be and they are hereby authorized and directed to call for a republican primary election to be held in the various voting precincts of the county of Orange on the day of August, 1908, between the hours of 12 m. and 4 p.m. of said day for the purpose of electing delegates to a county convention to be convened at the city of Santa Ana on August —, 1908, at 2 o'clock p.m. for the purpose of electing delegates to the eighth district congressional convention to be held at Santa Barbara on August —, 1908, and also delegates to the state convention to be held at —on —, 1908."
Dr. Ball followed the introduction of the resolutions with an urgent appeal for harmony in the party and pointed out the fact that great and widespread dissatisfaction exists over the action of the central committee in nominating the delegates instead of allowing the people to have a chance to vote their wishes.
Fred West of Fullerton seconded the adoption of the resolutions and H. H. Hale also urged the committee to reconsider its action and call a primary election.
Doc McMullan, the Herrinite, carried out his orders well. He declared the appointment of delegates was right, and bawled, "I for one will never vote to have them resign.
Morrison cited the legal opinion of Clyde Bishop, R.Y. Williams, J. Howard Bell and L. A. West, as added

New Walnut Bleach
J. B. Neff and S. Hayden were in Los Angeles on Tuesday inspecting the new electric bleach for walnuts under demonstration by Prof. Stabler at the University of California. Prof. Stabler is under contract with the walnut growers’ associations of Southern California for five years to discover a walnut bleach which will supersede the chlorine bleach.
The new bleach is composed of a solution of four pounds of salt and 100 pounds of water, which is run through an electrical apparatus and the nuts subsequently immersed therein. It is known as the four per cent solution, and is said to be a better bleach than the old process. The bleaching solution has moreover none of the objectionable features of the chlorine dip. A number of walnut growers were present from different portions of Southern California, and all pronounced the new solution superior to chlorine.
It is probable the local associations here and at other points in Southern California will immediately install the new electric bleach.
The chlorine bleach will be entirely abandoned. It having been patented and large sums sued for against the different walnut associations of the state, its use will be discontinued. Growers regard the patent as an absurdity and are resenting payment of any claims to the patentees for its use.

Secretary Phelps of the local walnut growers' association says so many growers are asking for membership that the association will have to look for larger quarters and additional machinery in order to handle the season's crop. Four hundred tons of walnuts will be handled by the association, which is twice the quantity shipped last season. Outside growers are constantly asking for membership, and one of the matters now confronting the organization is how to adequately care for all the outside growers seeking admittance into the association.
Samples of last year's nuts bleached by the new process are on exhibition at the American Savings bank. They are perfectly bleached. The nuts were among the hardest to bleach of last season's output, but were perfectly bleached by the new process. They are attracting much attention from local growers.
Will Not Attend Convention
W. M. Brown of Orange, one of the appointed delegates to the state convention, informed us on Monday afternoon that he would not attend the convention, that he was not in sympathy with the railroad push, and that he had never heard of Herrin.
"I would have resigned as a delegate if all the other delegates had done so, but I declined to do so and let machine men on the delegation vote the whole membership. You could not expect me to resign under such conditions. The mischief was created by appointing the delegates in the first place, and I do not see that party conditions are improving."
Mr. Brown was accompanied by Johnny Morrison, G. D. Toothaker and J. L. Kneesel. Morrison declared he did not vote for Estudillo at the River-side convention, and anyone who said he got $100 for his vote was a "liar."
