To Save the Forests
A decidedly practical piece of forestry work has just been done in congress. In the appropriation which the senate has passed for the support of the department of agriculture there is an item of $1,000,000 for the forestry service. This provision was fought vigorously by some of the senators from the far western states, but most of those from the middle west and from the rest of the country favored it. Merritt's Rat Story
It is rare indeed that City Clerk Merritt unbosoms himself to his friends sufficiently to admit that he was ever engaged in the newspaper business, yet such is the fact, for he himself has said it.
"I was in Memphis after the war," he said the other day, "where I occupied the responsible position of circulation manager and collector of the Avalanche. I had to show up at 2 o'clock in the morning, and was off duty at 3 in the afternoon, although, you know how it is yourself, it was frequently 5 and 6 before I got away. The manager would say, 'I want to step out a minute,' and it would be two hours before he got back.
"The building was full of rats," he went on. "I roomed in the third story, and used to keep my lunch in my trunk so the rats wouldn't get it. There were rat holes all over the building. One night they bored a hole through my trunk and stole my lunch. I was awakened one morning by a loud clatter. It was made by rats trying to get a piece of dried bread down their hole. It was too big and they couldn't get it in. One morning I found one of the newsboys in tears. I asked him what the matter was, and he said the rats had eaten his pie."
End of the rat story.
