DISLOYALTY HEARS REBUKE Mass Meeting of Indignant Republicans Scores Senatorial Delegates Who Supported Estudillo, and Demands That County Committee Call Primaries For the first time in the history of Orange county, republicans in mass meeting at the opera-house at Santa Ana on Saturday afternoon made public protest and entered words of severest condemnation at the action of the party’s delegates to the senatorial convention in voting for Miguel Estudillo for state senator, and also made formal demand upon the county committee to rescind its action taken two weeks ago in appointing delegates to the state and congressional conventions. The opera-house was filled by nearly 1000 loyal republicans, many standing at the rear of the auditorium. The Fullerton band paraded the streets before the meeting amid cheers and enthusiasm. In front of the hall a great crowd gathered, and one could hear many voices in condemnation of the high-handed outrage consummated by the machine in this county. When the auditorium was nearly filled Estudillo and a half dozen supporters entered and WALKER BUTTS, GETS Stewart's Vitriolic Attack Raifroader to His Feet, Is Roundly Hissed—Proxies by False Pretences, the Charging that machine met the county central committee proxies by false pretences and them for appointed delegates, the proxy-givers had been put the committee meeting, would have been voted for, A. art of Fullerton, in his spirit dress at Saturday’s indignation at Santa Ana, provoked untoward incident of the day. In the afternoon word came leaders in the movement for theification of the county’s politics attempt would be made, on the certain members of the mac-interfere with or interrupt the events. A hundred men immortal announced that if the push at a roughhouse they would have hands quite full. Nothing of occurred, and the meeting p as smoothly as could have bepected, until Walker’s butt calls of “Put him out!” opera-house was filled by nearly 1000 loyal republicans, many standing at the rear of the auditorium. The Fullerton band paraded the streets before the meeting amid cheers and enthusiasm. In front of the hall a great crowd gathered, and one could hear many voices in condemnation of the high-handed outrage consummated by the machine in this county. When the auditorium was nearly filled Estudillo and a half dozen supporters entered and walked down the main aisle to seats well in front. He was greeted with silence deep and profound. Handbills had been scattered about the streets bearing the following words: Attend the republican mass meeting at the Grand opera house, 3 p.m., and join in the protest against the disfranchisement of republican voters of Orange county and the betrayal of their trust by their delegates. These questions will be discussed: Which is the greater crime—to steal a man's money or to steal his vote? Why did the solid seven caucus with McMullen, Walker, Lester, Angle and Burke, at Riverside, instead of with the other members of the Orange county delegation? When did the republicans of Orange county give the push the right to select presidential electors for them? Why did all of the solid seven (Morrison, Whitaker, Fuller, Watson, Landell, Bird and Forster) vote for a secret ballot if any of them intended to obey their instructions? Is Johnny Morrison the chairman of the county central committee or is he simply acting for S.O. Walker? Possibly S.O. Walker could tell us who paid the push's expenses to and at the Riverside convention. If proper to declare for Smith, why did not the push so declare or instruct without waiting until driven to it by an enraged constituency? Did the solid seven love darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil? And there will be a rousing republican speech by that prince of spellbinders, Hon. Frank G. Tyrrell. Estudillo and a few supporters hurried to Santa Ana on Friday evening. He was alarmed. He had heard at Riverside the meeting would disavow his candidacy and inaugurate a fight against him. Such, however, was not the purpose of the meeting, and Estudillo was so informed. A feature of the morning was a heated discussion between Harry Hale and a young fellow named French, said to be Estudillo's manager, on the side- ification of the county's politics attempt would be made, on the certain members of the macadam interfere with or interrupt their events. A hundred men immediately announced that if the push at a roughhouse they would have hands quite full. Nothing of occurred, and the meeting proceeded smoothly as could have been expected, until Walker's butt calls of "Put him out!" and came from many parts of the hive. Stewart was proceeding adam in a well-worded address, which apparently lost his temper, ringing to the action of the committee appointing delegates. The sign of three county committees proxies were voted for appointing gates, were appended to the indignation meeting, and men had given the leaders assent that if personally present at the committee's meeting they would voted for primaries. Stewart was fiercely arraigned push chappies who sat immediate front of him, when, as he charged with having obtained proxies in pretences, Sad-Eyed Walker arrived in a singsong drawl protested. "I voted a proxy at the centre committee meeting, and you cannot me with obtaining it by false faces; and you believe yourself——" "I don't know you—I don'T who you are!" thundered Stewart. "My name is Walker," resisted the Herrinite. "I have heard of you!" quickly tortured Stewart, amid shouts of ter, yells and applause from all of the house. Stewart was at Walker again instant, saying he was glad to heard of him again, whereas were more roars of laughter applause. Senator Anderson moved that er be permitted to proceed with terruption. The latter proceeded amid son fusion, saying he had lived in O county fifteen years and had been member of the county committee ing all that time. "I have been a of being a railroad man [howls o slave laughter]; but I want to say am as free of railroad influence man in the county." Estudillo and a few supporters hurried to Santa Ana on Friday evening. He was alarmed. He had heard at Riverside the meeting would disavow his candidacy and inaugurate a fight against him. Such, however, was not the purpose of the meeting, and Estudillo was so informed. A feature of the morning was a heated discussion between Harry Hale and a young fellow named French, said to be Estudillo's manager, on the sidewalk not far away from Estudillo's hotel, where the candidate heard Hale's bazoo without difficulty. Hale accused French, who was a delegate at the senatorial convention, of doing dishonorable politics in standing in with the seven Herrin delegates from this county for a secret ballot. "We have no excuse to offer our action; we went to the convention to nominate Estudillo, and we tried to make it as easy as possible for your delegates to support him." "You made it easy for our seven delegates to hide their political disloyalty under a secret ballot. You helped them in their infamy, and you know it." Hale spoke his mind freely, denominating the seven Orange county men as railroad hirelings, and French and his associated delegates from Riverside as no better. "I want to give you Riversiders a bit of friendly advice," said Hale, shaking his finger under French's nose; "this meeting today is an Orange county affair, and you fellows had better keep out of it, if you know what is good for Estudillo. We admit his candidacy, and cannot undo it. We are not attacking him nor any other republican [Continued on page eight.] ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA, THURSDAY, JULY 23, 1908 R BUTTS, GETS LEMON Vitriolic Attack Calls 领语 to His Feet, and he Hissed—Proxies Procured the Pretences, the Charge that machine members of central committee procured false pretences and voted appointed delegates, when, if drivers had been present at mittee meeting, primaries been voted for, A. F. Lutz and A. I. Stewart, the committee named at Saturday's mass meeting to notify the county committee of the demand unanimously made that its action in appointing delegates to state and congressional conventions be rescinded and primaries called, waited upon Johnny Morrison, the Herrinite head of the county committee at his home in Orange on Monday morning. They stated the nature of their mission, and made formal demand that the county committee be summoned together, its action in appointing delegates rescinded and primaries called. Morrison, who holds a $100 per month job in the Herrin administration, coolly refused so to do, saying his "attorney" had informed him such action would be "illegal." Morrison frankly stated further in the discussion which followed, that the seven Herrin delegates to the senatorial convention never for a moment the county's politics that an should be made, on the part of members of the machine, to with or interrupt the order of hundred men immediately what if the push attempted use they would have their full. Morrison frankly stated further in the discussion which followed, that the seven Herrin delegates to the senatorial convention never for a moment intended obeying the instructions of the county convention not to vote for Estudillo for senator. Morrison was resolved not to call the county committee together, being impervious to all argument as to the ruinous effect his action would have upon the party. Five members of the county committee on Tuesday signed a call for a meeting of the committee at Santa Ana on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. This number is sufficient, according to the committee's by-laws, to insure a meeting. Morrison's action in defying the mandate of the republican mass-meet-ing comes through railroad headquarters in Los Angeles, which owns the republican party in this state. It was given out from this bureau last week that no attention would be paid the mass meeting. Wiff Ask Appointed Delegates to Resign Twenty county central committeemen have affixed their signatures to a demand that the appointed delegates to the state and congressional convenions resign, thus removing all possible obstacle to calling primaries. The matter will be discussed at Saturday's meeting of the committee, a call for which was issued yesterday. If the appointed delegates refuse to resign the blame for not calling primaries will be placed upon them. Mr. Pinchot said in a brief address that more attention would be paid to forestry in California than in any other state, for the value of land here depends more largely upon water than in any other part of the country. He also said agricultural land was more valuable in Southern California than in any other part of the world, and that the system of irrigation here was the best on earth. C. C. Chapman spoke upon the value of water. He spoke highly of the forestry bureau and the important work it has in hand. JULY 23, 1908 NUMBER 40 Big Sale at The S. Q. R.
