RECORD OF A RAILROAD MAN Estudillo's Record Upon Three Railroad Bills In Last Assembly—Voted for Railroad and Against Interest of People Miguel Estudillo of Riverside, who was on Saturday nominated for state senator for the thirty-ninth district, at the fake convention held at Riverside, is one of the best known railroad politicians in Southern California. He does not consider himself necessarily a representative of the people, but rather takes orders from the railroad machine, and when the interests of the railroad run counter to those of the people, he sides with the railroad every time. If voters of Orange county desire such a man to represent them in the senate, they should by all means support him, for as a railroad legislator Estudillo is a shining success. In fact so well did he obey the command of Herrin, that his nomination as senator was programmed immediately after adjournment of the legislature in 1906. One of the strong anti-railroad men from Southern California, referring to this man's record, speaks as follows: "During the time the Reciprocal Demurrage Bill was up for consideration three of the members from the north said that the orange growers of Southern California ought to be forced to dig up their trees and go out of business as they never sent any good oranges to San Francisco and that the vegetable men required the cars to store their goods in. "The bill which would have given more relief to the shippers of this state stand against the railroad stand together for an indemnity for speaker of the assembly liably informed, and they came from Walter Parker he left that meeting and with Walter Parker and made that he should have the order of the committee on ways providing he would stand with road company for their o speaker. "Now as to specific chstanding with the railroad and what the record shows call your attention. "1. To page 1319 of the assembly of 1907. The moval bill was simply a bill Sacramento for its independence was no other motive behind it. The railroad company every man that it could for Mr. Estudillo voted for it. "2. "During the time the Reciprocal Demurrage Bill was up for consideration three of the members from the north said that the orange growers of Southern California ought to be forced to dig up their trees and go out of business as they never sent any good oranges to San Francisco and that the vegetable men required the cars to store their goods in. "The bill which would have given more relief to the shippers of this state than any other measure which has been proposed for years was defeated by a vote of 21 to 35 and three members from Los Angeles county and one from San Bernardino were the only support it got from all Southern California. "That and the State Capital Removal bill were pretty accurate tests of the affiliations of the members of the last legislature." A member from a county in the central part of the state, who has served several terms in the assembly and is well known for his prominence in fraternal and religious circles and for his consistent independence of machine rule in politics, in a private letter says: "I am perfectly willing to furnish you the facts as to Assemblyman Estudillo's record as a machine man in the last legislature. I haven't the time nor you the patience to go into detailed account of everything, but I do know this, that he stood with the railroad company against the people on every important piece of legislation; that he was in direct communication with Walter Parker during the entire session and that he took orders from the said Walter Parker direct. I also know that prior to the meeting of the legislature I met Estudillo in Stanton's office in Los Angeles, and we there agreed to" California F. When the reciprocal demurrage own as assembly bill No. 225, her consideration in the assembly set for 11 o'clock on March 6th. a bill to compel the railroad by to furnish cars to the shipper live days demand, and also promat the shipper should use the with when received, loading immediately, and providing a ment for not furnishing them or using them, or for ordering cars are not to be used. The bill was a law intended to remedy the of the S.P.R.R. Co. in showing with them in relation to the raisin indudustry. The hay fields of Alameda, San Benito, San Luis Obispo and Santa Clara counties have also suffered seriously and I consider it a direct crime against the people of the state for any man to go to the legislature and there serve the railroad company instead of the people who elected him. "If the people of the eighth district send Mr. Estudillo either to the senate or assembly, they are sending a representative of the railroad company and not a representative of the people." The suit of Dr. F. K. Strasser against E. J. Bulgin was decided by Judge Deasmore in the Riverside superior court on Monday in favor of the former. The suit was brought for recovery of a 20-acre alfalfa ranch at San Jacinto valued at $5000 and exchanged by Dr. Strasser for 16,000 shares of Kelso mining and milling company stock, which afterward proved worthless. Dr. Strasser's complaint alleged that the minister had knowingly misrepresented the value of the ore, the indebtedness of the company, the number of shares of stock held by the directors, the relations between the Kelso company and the West coast security company by which the latter concern was to receive half of the proceeds from the sale of the stock in the Kelso company, and other things affecting the value of stock. Judge Densmore announced from the bench that the plaintiff's testimony fully sustained the allegations of the complaint. Considerable stock in this company has been disposed of by Bulgin in Southern California and the outcome of the suit has been awaited with much interest.
