VOLUME XXXVIII AN FOUR TRAITORS UNDER COVER Orange County Men Join River-siders for Secret Baffot at Senatorial Convention—Four Renegades Go to Estudillo A little more raw politics such as was pulled off by the county committee at Santa Ana last Friday, and followed up at the fake senatorial convention at Riverside on Saturday, and the republican party of this county might just as well hang its harp on a willow tree. Miguel Estudillo was nominated on the eleventh ballot, after ten fake ballots had been taken. Seven of the Orange county delegation previously voted with the ten Riverside railroaders in the convention for a secret ballot. This was simply a trick of the Estudillo push to permit these delegates to cover up their shame. On the eleventh ballot, four of these shameless renegades went over to Estudillo, and he was declared the nominee. That these fellows had their price from the start is the opinion of those who have followed the course of recent events. This was simply a trick of the Estudillo push to permit these delegates to cover up their shame. On the eleventh ballot, four of these shameless renegades went over to Estudillo, and he was declared the nominee. That these fellows had their price from the start is the opinion of those who have followed the course of recent events. The six anti-railroad men from this county stood out to the last against this infamous action, but were simply outvoted by the hirelings of Herrin. Hale and Stutsman fought valiantly for an open ballot, but the seven machine men from Orange county were taken under wing by the Riverside push, which supported a secret ballot. It was the first time in the history of the district that such unwarrantable action was taken. J. H. Whitaker of Buena Park was chosen chairman of the convention, and Maurice Griffen of Riverside secretary. When the committee on order of business reported, recommending a secret ballot, Hale moved to amend by having an open ballot. Whitaker, who seems to be an aspirant for railroad honors, promptly ruled Hale out of order. On an appeal to the house, Hale's motion was lost, only the six anti-railroad men from this county supporting it. Hale supported his motion with considerable earnestness, saying to Whitaker: "It is ruleable that when three men demand a roll call, the chair must give it. If you want to go on record as opposing this rule, go ahead." W. W. Wilson of Riverside was supported for senator by the six anti-railroaders, while the seven collar-men distributed their votes in a series of fake ballots between Dr. Royer of Orange, J. H. Whitaker of Buena Park, and Ed Amerige of Fullerton. Estudillo was placed in nomination by the Riverside contingent, and secured 10 votes on each ballot, until the tenth, when the first traitor went over to Estudillo. On the following ballot the Riversider received four Orange county votes, and was declared the nominee. Estudillo made a speech, saying he was the candidate of no faction, but neglected to deny that he wore the railroad collar. He said a month ago the delegate probably caucus the night before convention. They did. With delegates were Office-Seeker Mr. Cal Lester, Sim Walker and Joe Burke. The six anti-Herrin delegation, Blodgett, Stutsman, Wright and Lutz) sat in the lobby of waiting until nearly midnight invited into the caucus. Shortly before midnight, J.ton, one of the best known highly respected men of Orangy, tiring of the manner of events were shaping themselves upstairs and knocking at the caucus-room, asked for Mr. "How is this?" inquired to the Trabuco Herrinite, who worthy appeared, "you are a caucus, with a gang of railroads closed with you, and we gates chosen by our conventions admittance into your caucus explain your actions, Mr. Mor." "You're a Lincoln-Roosevelt can't come in!" exclaimed as he started to re-enter the room. "Hold on; not so fast, Mr. I am not a member of the Roosevelt league; I am a r who has voted the ticket years, and I want to know right you exclude me from a delegates to this senatorial tion." Morrison said he would go would be out again in a minute. On again coming out of the room, the Herrinite said: "We are just holding a little conference among ourselves no caucus." The following day, on the c being called to order, and be proceeded to nominations. An entrance is being cut in the east wall, which will open into the grocery department, which will be moved from its present location at the front of the store. The center of the store will be devoted to shoes and gents' furnishings, with ladies waiting room, and the front to dry goods exclusively. The interior will be handsomely embellished and when completed the store will be one of the handsomest in the county. Contractor Tedford is making the improvements. V. U. Simpson and family returned the past week from San Juan Springs. Mr. Simpson experienced much benefit from the baths, and is regaining the 55 pounds which he lost during his recent illness, when he was several weeks in bed. He tips the beam at 188, and feels in the best of health. Hugo Strodthoff delightfully entertained the Four-Four club Wednesday evening at the regular monthly meeting. Mrs. Welborn Wallop received the ladies' prize and Henry Adams the gentleman's prize at the game of whist. Widespread indignation at the action of the committee in bending its knee to Herrin exists throughout Orange county, and menaces the success of the ticket in this county at the polls in November. The reasons for the uncalled-for usurpation of authority by the county committee is explained at length elsewhere. The reasons for the uncalled-for usurpation of authority by the county committee is explained at length elsewhere. It is, in a word, that Herrin has sent his orders, through his hired man Parker, to program this county's delegation to the state and congressional district conventions. He is engaged in a life-and-death struggle with the clean republicans of the north. They are at his throat. They seek, at next month's convention, to strangle his hold, and that of his whole buccaneering crew, upon the party, and to release it from bondage to the railroad's political bureau. He has sent word south to rob us of our heritage. Things will be doing at the meeting, and an invitation is extended republicans in all portions of Orange county to be present and hear the discussion of the issues now confronting party men in this county. Frank J. Tyrrell, the well-known Los Angeles anti-railroad orator, will be present and deliver an address. It is the opinion of republicans from one end of the county to the other that the party has had altogether too much of the MacMullans, the Walkers, the Morrisons, the Watsons and all the railroad lot, who seek to rule the party for their own base personal ends. These men are owned by the railroad, along with others, higher-ups and lower-downs. Let the whole push be told to go away back and sit down. A number of committeemen who voted for appointed delegates have been interviewed by leading republicans in their precincts and have announced their intention of demanding another meeting of the central committee, when they will change their votes in favor of primaries. The Fullerton band and a procession of Fullerton, Placentia, La Habra and Orangethorpe republicans will arrive in Anaheim at 2 o'clock this (Thursday) afternoon to advertise the meeting to be held on Saturday in Santa Ana. Republicans of this city who wear no railroad collar are invited to join in the demonstration. The call for the meeting reads: Resolved That a mass meeting of the republican voters of Orange county is hereby called to meet at the operahouse, in Santa Ana, July 18th, 1908, at 3 o'clock p.m. to consider the action of the majority of the county said he would go inside and out again in a minute. coming out of the caucus Herrinite said: just holding a little friendly among ourselves, and it's nowing day, on the convention ordered to order, and being ready to nominations for state no less than three Orange men were placed in nomination.
