QUESTION OF PUBLIC SEWERS
Data Procured by Capt. Ahlborn from Santa Ana, Riverside, Pomona and Pasadena Throwing Light Upon Cost of Construction, Maintenance, Etc.—Necessity for Sewers In Anaheim
Capt. J. F. Ahlborn has procured data from four progressive Southern California cities upon public sewers, and the information is presented herewith. Two years ago, while president of the chamber of commerce, Capt. Ahlborn was active in promoting plans for the construction of sewers in Anaheim, and was foremost in discussing the necessity for the speedy construction of these needful adjuncts of our growing community. On his return from the east some months ago, after an absence of a year, he immediately began the discussion again, and has carried it so far forward that he is enabled to present definite figures of probable cost of a sewer system for this city. Judging by information received from these centers of population, he is convinced a local system can be installed for $50,000, and be maintained at not greatly to exceed $1000 per year. Possibly the latter figure might be very materially lessened.
From information gathered locally tells me that the combined desirable from the fact that much money to flush them in mer time. In the winter it is plenty of rain it works all from the further fact that it days the smell is something there is not enough water us.
We have a 2¼ mile sewer lan school with 8 inch pipe only one foot to the mile. Our sewer pipe in general up 8 inch. The 6 inch pipe tells me is preferable.

Judging by information received from these centers of population, he is convinced a local system can be installed for $50,000, and be maintained at not greatly to exceed $1000 per year. Possibly the latter figure might be very materially lessened.
From information gathered locally from building contractors and others, he finds that during the past year upward of 100 houses have been erected here, each one being provided with a cesspool costing not less than $50. In some instances, where cesspools have been excavated to a depth of 40 feet, the cost is nearer $75, but figuring it at $50, it is found that no less than $5000 has been expended in this manner during the twelvemonth. Here alone is 10 per cent of the actual cost of a sewer system for Anaheim. More buildings are being erected in this community at the present time than ever, and several important business structures are in contemplation. Among these are the $10,000 Carnegie library building, contract for which has been already signed, and a commodious two-story brick headquarters building for the water company, plans for which are in course of preparation. Plans have been also drawn for a three-story hotel building, and work upon the structure may be looked for at an early date. These improvements make sewers all the more important, and the constantly increasing population renders the subject one which must be taken up and pushed to completion before long.
Capt. Ahlborn wrote for information upon this matter to the cities of Santa Ana, Riverside, Pomona and Pasadena, and the answers received are as follows:

Anniversary of Battle
Friday, July 3d, was the 42d anniversary of the battle of Konigsgratz,
between the Prussian and Austrian
armies, in which our well-known
fellow-townsman, Joseph Dubbel,
participated, entering upon Austrian
soil with the conquering Prussian
forces. The date marks the dawn of
the German confederation, the battle
compelling the various German
states which were at war with Prussia to lay down their arms and join
with the confederation.
The Prussian force was composed
of three army corps, which were
commanded by Gen. Herbert von
Bittenfeld, Crown Prince Frederick
(Unser Fritz) who afterward participated in the Franco-German war
and was subsequently Emperor of
Germany, and Prince Frederick Carl.
The army numbered 200,000, while Austria had 400,000 men in action, occupying advantageous positions in the mountains surrounding the battlefield. The Prussians were compelled to fall back three times, but in their final assault carried all before them, achieving one of the greatest victories in modern history. The battle raged 12 hours, beginning at 4 in the morning and continuing until 4 in the afternoon. The Prussian loss was 35,000. The Austrian loss was severe, but the exact number of killed is not known.
The Prussians marched upon Vienna, and when in sight of the city the Austrians surrendered.
Peace was declared, which was

The Prussians marched upon Vienna, and when in sight of the city the Austrians surrendered.
Peace was declared, which was only to continue four years, when the German army again took up arms against France. In this war Mr. Dubbel also participated, fighting in many of the important battles of that struggle. He was over the Rhine with the first invading corps,
fought at Gravelotte, Strassburg,
Sedan and was at the siege of Paris.
As Konigsgratz was the most important battle in which the Prussian forces had ever engaged, inasmuch as it paved the way for the
confederation of the warring German states, so was Sedan the most important of the later struggle, for here the French army was annihilated and Napoleon and Bazaine were taken prisoners, along with 150,000 soldiers and great stores of ammunition, field pieces, guns and supplies. Gravelotte had been a bloody battle, but Sedan marked the beginning of the end.
He was decorated with a medal for conspicuous bravery at Konigsgratz, and one day, while walking in the streets of Berlin, Von Moltke,
