THE SENATORIAL FIGHT The thirty-ninth district republican senatorial convention meets at Riverside on Saturday for the purpose of selecting a candidate for senator. Thus far the only avowed candidate for the place is the man the railroad machine put up for the place two years ago—Miguel Estudillo of Riverside. The ten Riverside county delegates stand instructed to vote for him "first, last and all the time," while the thirteen delegates from this county are under instructions not to support him under any consideration. That any of these thirteen delegates will so far forget their manhood as to knuckle down to the railroad machine and disobey the instructions solemnly given them by the county convention which elected them, seems out of the question; yet seven of them have refused to go into caucus with the six out-and-out opponents of the railroad machine on the delegation. It is the belief among persons well informed politically that these DOES THIS PLATFORM TO YOU? In accordance with the ed intention of the Lincoln velt republican league publican voters an opposing what they are at the August primaries Angeles county central of the league has adopted lowing platform: 1. The enactment of a mary election law where active officers shall be non-direct vote of the people assembly constitutiona ment Number 3 shall be at the general election in 1908. 2. A bill providing th ers of California, acting their respective parties, an advisory vote for Un senator and that the car ceiving the largest number of his party, shall be de party nominee for such o 3. The enactment of as will penalize any vi the provision of Section 12, of the constitution rebates and discrimin transportation compa which section, for two years, by the neglect of ture has remained a railroad machine and disobey the instructions solemnly given them by the county convention which elected them, seems out of the question; yet seven of them have refused to go into caucus with the six out-and-out opponents of the railroad machine on the delegation. It is the belief among persons well informed politically that these seven men are ready to do the bidding of the railroad to almost any extent, and some of them may even go so far as to vote for Estudillo. Such men will be promptly read out of the republican party in the August convention. It is believed the railroad will drop Estudillo as a candidate, and reward him in some other way for his subservience to its political machine. Probably some other railroad tool will be selected, who will be quite as acceptable as the man who dodged a vote on the reciprocal demurrage bill, and otherwise showed himself to be a representative of the railroad, not of the people. But should the over-confident railroad machine, debauching two of the Orange county delegates, place Estudillo in nomination, his defeat will follow at the polls in November as surely as the sun will rise tomorrow morning. He cannot hope to creep in under the cloak of a Taft tidal wave. Voters will differentiate this year more than ever before, and will separate the wheat from the chaff. Let the convention place in nomination some capable, clean republican for the office. Let it not be said the district is under vassalage to the railroad, but rather composed of free men. In a word, let a man be placed in nomination who can be elected, for during his term of office he will vote for two United States senators. Let such a man party nominee for such or all as will penalize any violation of the provision of Section 12, of the constitution rebates and discriminates transportation company which section, for two years, by the neglect of the nature, has remained a co- and utterly inoperative. 4. A reciprocal demurrage modeled after the Texas and substantially embodied sembly bill 225, which passes the legislature of providing that railroads shippers damages for failing liver cars to them for theitation of goods within a time after such cars are ordered. 5. The enactment of a eled after the Hepburn rate law, which shall fully and prevent the granting form of free transportation person except railroad carriers and such persons as sed by said Hepburn law. 6. The enactment of an anti-racetrack gambling Former railroad commission James Rea of San Jose had statement in the San Call, exposing the inner railroad machine in Rea was formerly politic Santa Clara county, and with the railroad push. In a word, let a man be placed in nomination who can be elected, for during his term of office he will vote for two United States senators. Let such a man be nominated, and he will sweep the district. Nominate Estudillo, and he will go to inevitable defeat, and as well place in jeopardy the rest of the ticket. We have it on good authority that notification of tomorrow's meeting of the county central committee at Santa Ana has not been made upon each and every member of the committee members who believe in a square deal and who have not been notified of the meeting should make it their business to attend, notification or no notification. Push members of the committee will attempt to tie Orange county to the tail of the railroad kite, by appointing delegates to the state convention. Let a full membership of the committee be present and let the people know who's who in this county. Will Orange county stand for delegates arbitrarily appointed to the state convention? THIS PLATFORM APPEAL TO YOU? According with the announcement of the Lincoln-Roosevelt Republican league to give reelection voters an opportunity of voting what they are voting for in August primaries; the Los Angeles county central committee league has adopted the foliage platform: League of Lincoln-Roosevelt can clubs of California declares the following as its live platform for the ensuing legislature: The enactment of a direct primary law whereby all electors shall be nominated by vote of the people, provided only constitutional amendments number 3 shall be adopted general election in November. A bill providing that the voter of California, acting within respective parties, may cast hisory vote for United States and that the candidate re-elects the largest number of votes party, shall be declared the nominee for such office. The enactment of such laws penalize any violation of provision of Section 21, Article II constitution for bidding and discriminations byortion companies, but section, for twenty-nine by the neglect of the legislatures remained a dead letter. TO APPOINT DELEGATES The republican county central committee will meet at Santa Ana tomorrow, when the matter of selecting delegates to the state and congressional district conventions will be decided. The committee will say whether a county convention shall be held or whether the committee itself shall arbitrarily appoint the delegates. For some time past indications have not been lacking that it is the purpose of machine men on the committee to favor the latter course. Mr. Herrin is being hard pushed in this day and generation, and he had the narrowest kind of an escape from political destruction in the Sacramento convention. Only the fact that he appointed more delegates than he elected saved his bacon. Since then conditions have grown worse for him in the north, and he finds the ground slipping away from under him. As an offset to these losses, he is calling upon the lambs to rally to his support, and Orange county is to be asked to do what it can to keep the boss in power. Every machine man in Orange county, every man who considers the party as a stepping stone to the achievement of his own private ambition; every man with a lively sense of political favors to come and every snipe shooter in employ of the railroad eager to lick his master's hand—all these chaps are for appointed delegates. These The enactment of such laws penalize any violation of the provision of Section 21, Article 46 of the constitution for bidding and discriminations by transportation companies, but in section, for twenty-nine years the neglect of the legislature has remained a dead letter merely inoperative. A reciprocal demurrage bill, passed after the Texas car law was ostantially embodied in Asbury Bill 225, which failed to override the legislature of 1907, provided that railroads must pay damages for failure to deliver goods within a reasonable time after such cars have been delivered. The enactment of a law modifies the Hepburn railroad law, which shall fully penalize events the granting of any free transportation to any except railroad commissioners such persons as are excepted by Hepburn law. The enactment of a stringent secretrack gambling law. An railroad commissioner in Rea of San Jose has a lengthy report in the San Francisco proposing the inner plans of a road machine in this state. It was formerly political boss of Clara county, and operated the railroad push. He charges machine not only of controllingors, legislators, railroad and commissioners in this state, but judiciary as well, even at the state supreme court, whose members, excepting Justice Beatty, owe their intention to the railroad. Rea pushed of resorting to every machine man in Orange county, every man who considers the party as a stepping stone to the achievement of his own private ambition; every man with a lively sense of political favors to come and every snipe shooter in employ of the railroad eager to lick his master's hand—all these chaps are for appointed delegates. These men have heard Herrin's voice in the darkening gloom of impending defeat, and are responsive to his call. There is no other purpose in this projected appointment of delegates than to help save Herrin's bacon. Clean men stand for honest primaries, here in Orange county as elsewhere. The Herrinites are for appointed delegates. If delegates are appointed, it will be the duty of republicans to take steps to extend the provisions of the primary election law to Orange county, so this impending infamy may never be repeated. When Johnny Morrison called the meeting for Friday afternoon, knowing that delegates to the senatorial district convention at Riverside had made preparations to go to that city on Friday morning, he lent his efforts to the machine scheme to prevent, if possible, these men from attending the committee meeting. Morrison protested at the county convention that he wanted to act fairly in politics hereafter, but he has since acted in a manner that leaves no doubt where he stands. The law provides that when fifty per cent of the voters in a certain district petition the board of supervisors to call a special election for the purpose, the board must call an election and submit to the people whether they desire to have the primary election law made mandatory in that district. This has been done in a number of districts all over the state, and wherever the issue was presented to the people, it was overwhelmingly carried in favor of the mandatory primary in the proportion of about 100 to 1. These figures are more eloquent than words, and demonstrate what the people of California think about the usurpation by the machine county committees of the rights of the people to vote for, and themselves elect their representatives to conventions. A direct primary law would give every voter a voice in naming party candidates. No legitimate argument has ever been offered against it. The rank and file demand it and the bosses will be compelled to concede it. Sues Electric Railway Suit for $800 damages for injuries received in the Slauson Junction collision has been brought by Miss Georgia Maganey of Santa Ana. The complaint was filed on Friday evening. Miss Maganey who is 16 years of age, is represented in the suit by her father, George A. Maganety, who was appointed her guardian ad litem by Judge West. The defendant is the Pacific electric railway. In the Pacific electric wreck in which plaintiff was hurt a score of Santa Ana people were injured, several of them more seriously than Miss Maganety. This is the first damage suit brought as a result of the accident. A claim agent of the railway company has spent much time in Santa Ana since June 19, but as yet he has been unable to secure a settlement with those who suffered most. Miss Maganety's severest wound was a cut on her neck and chin.
