WHAT'S DOING IN POLITICS Smith and Wright Seeking Congressional Nomination, with Chances Favoring Man From Over the Mountain—Estudillo's to See the Smoke on Saturday While Senator Wright is not thought to be making any considerable headway in his candidature for congress here in Orange county, he nevertheless presents a formidable competitor to Congressman Smith for the nomination at Santa Barbara August 20. Mr. Smith has hitherto had things his own way in the nominating conventions since his initial selection six years ago, and has had plain sailing in subsequent conventions of the Eighth district. While at times in recent years other candidates have appeared to contest his progress, he has had no difficulty in running them upon a siding and capturing the nomination hands down. How he is going to fare this year, with an avowed candidate, strongly backed by the machine, actively campaigning against him, is a matter of more or less speculation at this time. The convention will be composed of 111 delegates of which 56 will be necessary to a choice. The list of delegates apportioned to each of the eleven counties composing this time? He will start voting accredited to San Mateo with the 29 in Riverside Bernardino, which the race undoubtedly offered him his total up to 48, within enough to nominate. Give him the solitary vote perial without doing violent political sentiments of the county. It will be seen formidable candidate, all believe the odds favor from over the mountain. Next Saturday comes the convention at Riverside shall see whether Ross Pa by the card when he said have two of these recalcitrates, or the whole bunch if he wanted them. Min not say he could have the tudillo, for it is to be doubled one of them would so their instructions as to vote marked Riversider. What probably do is to line up railroad, and support candidate acceptable to chine, while they will mitted to return home with less of a clean bill of health, for their instruction so far as to forbid them porting Estudillo. But refused to go into caucus straight-out opponents the road, is proof positive thing is rotten, not in but right here in Orange. How he is going to fare this year, with an avowed candidate, strongly backed by the machine, actively campaigning against him, is a matter of more or less speculation at this time. The convention will be composed of 111 delegates of which 56 will be necessary to a choice. The list of delegates apportioned to each of the eleven counties composing the district has been received, and figures up as follows: San Diego.....19 San Bernardino.....17 Orange.....14 Riverside.....12 Santa Barbara.....10 San Luis Obispo.....10 Tulare.....9 Kern.....9 Ventura.....7 Inyo.....3 Imperial.....1 Total .....111 That Smith will come south with the votes of the transtehachapi counties behind him is admitted. With his own county of Kern, and with Tulare and San Luis Obispo safely tucked away in his inside pocket, he will begin his foraging expedition this side the mountain with 28 votes, just half enough to land the nomination. He is reasonably sure of the three votes from Inyo, or ought to be, and if delegates are not arbitrarily appointed through railroad influences in this county, he is certain to tie up the 14 votes to which Orange county is accredited. This will give him 45, with only 11 more necessary to annex in order to send Mr. Wright home a sadder but wiser man. Smith ought to be able to land these in San Bernardino county alone, albeit the railroad push has been making all sorts of claims about the up-valley shire. San Bernardino has been first for the machine and then fornist it, and in whichever camp it found itself, put up a spirited fight, which made its opponents feel its virility in a political contest. As long as the county has been supporting Smith it has been anti-railroad, although two years Clean republicans of Santa Co., as well as in other parts of the state, express satisfaction the announcement that missioner John C. Lynch Crimmins will manage the Herrin. Lynch and are notoriously railroad and their names place Southern Pacific dominance before the people. Lynch days was an intimate协力 of Abe Ruef and Crimmins has been a leader the ward boss, who would bidding of the railroad. Adams, who is to assist, very Ruef's registrar of came into prominence after ago through his efforts ballot box stuffers. This array of talent, fight of the machine and forces of decency, will excellent target for the Roosevelters. The pers been making all sorts of claims about the up-valley shire. San Bernardino has been first for the machine and then fornist it, and in whichever camp it found itself, put up a spirited fight, which made its opponents feel its virility in a political contest. As long as the county has been supporting Smith it has been anti-railroad, although two years ago it broke into the railroad reservation again, but was not molested in its support of the man of Kern. Now that the railroad has produced Wright as its nominee, it will be interesting to see what San Bernardino is going to do. But whatever the orders from the north, it is dollars to crullers that the railroad cannot control the county at a fairly conducted primary. But the county is not to have a primary next month, and how the county central committee, which has been delegated authority to name the delegation, will side in the fight, must be one of the things which must keep the Kern man awake nights. Riverside county seems spiked the same way against him, although in a fair primary he would sweep the county. It seems reasonably certain that in both counties Smith can win a sufficient number of delegates to land the nomination. If he cannot, he must look to Santa Barbara, where the appropriation for a federal building which he secured in the last congress ought to help him win his fight. How is Wright figuring it out all He will start with the 19th accredited to San Diego, and the 29 in Riverside and San Diego, which the railroad has tenderly offered him, will run up to 48, within 8 votes of him to nominate. We might join the solitary vote from Immediately without doing violence to the sentiments of the new nation. It will be seen Wright is a probable candidate, although we find the odds favor the man over the mountain. Saturday comes the senatorial election at Riverside, and we see whether Ross Parker spoke heard when he said he could no of these recalcitrant delegates the whole bunch of seven wanted them. Mind, he did not could have them for Essex for it is to be doubted if any of them would so far forget instructions as to vote for this Riversider. What they will try do is to line up with the state, and support some other state acceptable to the ma-while they will thus be per-return home with more or less a clean bill of political instruction for their instructions go only to forbid them from supposing Estudillo. But that they must go into caucus with the out opponents to the railway proof positive that some rotten, not in Denmarck, but here in Orange county, convention promises to be one mess.” The senior senator is industriously spreading the word that he is a supporter of the president and his policies. That unquestionably is the proper political play at this time. He says nothing of his failure to stand by the president in the matter of the four battleships, nor has he a word to say about the charges of Senator La Follette in speeches made in California that he voted with “the system” at Washington—the “system” which has waged warfare on Roosevelt as the higher ups are doing on the graft prosecution in San Francisco. The unhappiest predicament in the senator’s life is said to have been his encounter with President Roosevelt over matter sent out by his press bureau. This was an institution maintained by the senator some months ago to promote his candidacy for re-election. Besides boosting Perkins it knocked Roosevelt. It did so with all the argument of the corporation “system” that has so strong a grip in the legislative halls at Washington. The president received a copy of one of these bureau articles that were sent to newspapers in California. Perkins had an interview at the White House about the matter that was not at all pleasant. But the senator is now boosting Roosevelt, as even the “system,” is feeling itself compelled to do. Chairman Teller of the republican state central committee has an to return home with more or less a clean bill of political rights for their instructions go only to forbid them from supplying Estudillo. But that they have to go into caucus with the seat-out opponents to the railroad's proof positive that some rotten, not in Denmarck, but here in Orange county. Convention promises to be one most notable of the year, and will probably be said and at the gathering which will run the memory of those who Farmer Hale is getting his spin trim, and will probably something to say before he hits holt upon the seat of the state's pants. If he is strong, the machine will go into the upper, like Walker did at Santa Clare Talk about "Who Threw the Bills;" that may not be a marker of Hale may do to the railroad so the delegates who are singing We Are Seven." A republicans of San Francisco well as in other portions of state, express satisfaction over announcement that Bank Commissioner John C. Lynch and Phil Morris will manage the campaign forrin. Lynch and Crimmins seriously railroad adherents their names place the issue of turn Pacific domination clearly in the people. Lynch in former years was an intimate political assoc of Abe Ruef and Henry Ach. Morris has been a leading type of third boss, who would do the job of the railroad. George P. Moore, who is to assist, was former Ruef's registrar of voters and into prominence a few years through his efforts to protect box stuffers. An array of talent, leading the machine against the decency, will furnish an ant target for the Lincoln-lelters. The personalities of one of these bureau articles that were sent to newspapers in California. Perkins had an interview at the White House about the matter that was not at all pleasant. But the senator is now boosting Roosevelt, as even the "system" is feeling itself compelled to do. Chairman Teller of the republican state central committee has announced the following appointments of committees to manage the approaching campaign: Legal—Henry A. Melvin, chairman; J. L. McNab, Grove L. Johnson, A. H. Ashley, T. B. Dozier, F. W. Stearns, W. H. Davis. Campaign—George Stone, chairman; Henry Abraham, W. F. Parker, Chas E. Clinch, C. D. Swan. Finance—J. K. Wilson, chairman; J. M. Carson, Charles E. Clinch, John D. Daly, J. F. Fugazzi, George Stone, D. O. Druffel, W. F. Parker, A. B. Coleman, A. H. Ashley, G. N. Black. Auditing—John D. Daly, chairman; A. B. Coleman, J. F. Fugazzi. Registration — Henry Abraham, chairman; C. D. Swan, G. N. Black, J. J. Suess, F. W. Stearns. Literary—D. O. Druffel, chairman; Henry A. Melvin, W. H. Davis. It would be interesting to know how many of these committeemen could be elected to membership upon the state central committee by republicans of their respective counties. Certainly not many of them could be so honored. Mr. Teller is himself not a member of the state central committee, and was not elected by the republican state convention. He is one of Knight's appointees upon the "executive committee," which in all fair dealing and political honesty should have been composed of members selected from the regularly elected state central committee. George Stone, Walter Parker and other employes of the Southern Pacific railroad are appointed to membership of important committees, and they will have much to say concerning the management of the campaign; yet not one of them is a low to look beyond the law in examining sunday and with the next it b statutes and, without any law and even in rules of the trial court issue in dispute to a part ment of the superior court In this wise it not only from a judge whom he gives edge and point to to that same judge. The lay mind has been cised for daring to question appeal court's interpreter law in graft cases, but satisfied with condition Judge Dunne must "follow it is written in all cases; cumstances, without fear regard to public clam friendships, no feelings, and totally without reg consequences to himself appeal court, without Judge Dunne by name 'law as it is written' d court follow when it re to the superior court a judge other than Dunne Ruef's sureties? Une below may not refuse to relatives as sureties, o may know that they weerty owners" in the arby transfer from the party for the purpose of bailing other words, there is a vent Ruef from putting loot to get his liberty and string to the plunder such a manner that if array of talent, leading the of the machine against the of decency, will furnish an ant target for the Lincoln-nelters. The personalities of free men will themselves give active index of the character of machine. league will seek to introduce candidates to the public early in campaign. The aim is to give best citizens ample opportunity to study the character of theoes and to be in a position to intelligently. United States Senator George C. has come to see the need in candidacy for re-election of beadmirer of President Roosevelt in strong contrast with one had to say through his bureau a few months ago he is proclaiming his support of and for the national administra-ted its politics. While the sen-ies thus professing a warm ship and loyal adherence, it stated authoritatively that president is in no reciprocal However much Perkins says Jes Roosevelt, Roosevelt is so say he doesn't like Perkins. said to share the opinion of A. Knight as to "slipperi-political honesty should have been composed of members selected from the regularly elected state central committee. George Stone, Walter Parker and other employes of the Southern Pacific railroad are appointed to membership of important committees, and they will have much to say concerning the management of the campaign; yet not one of them is a regularly elected member of the state central committee. Politically, they are usurpers, and are not entitled to a place in the party's managemen. Republicans throughout the state held primaries in May and elected delegates to the state convention. This body selected a state central committee, from which an executive committee should have been chosen. But they were not so chosen. Men were selected for this committee from outside the ranks of the state central committee, and now they are appointed to membership upon committees in whose hands is placed the control and management of the party. What becomes of the regularly elected members of the state central committee? What was the need of selecting them? What, in a word, was the need for holding a state convention? Republicans of California are for Taft unanimously; but they repudiate this raw political work by the railroad machine. In the latest ruling of the court of appeal, made in favor of Boodler Abe Ruef, there is a good deal to set the lay mind to thinking. With one breath the court forbids the court be-enlargement easy. Put This Stove in Your Kitchen It is wonderfully convenient to do kitchen work on a stove that's ready at the instant wanted, and out of the way the moment you're done. Such a stove is the New Perfection Wick Blue Flame Oil Cook-Stove. By using it you avoid the continuous overpowering heat of a coal fire and cook with comfort, even in dog-days. The NEW PERFECTION Wick Blue Flame Oil Cook-Stove is so constructed that it cannot add perceptibly to the heat of a room; the flame being directed up a retaining chimney to the stove top where it is needed for cooking. You can see that a stove sending out heat in but one direction would be preferable on a hot day to a stove radiating heat in all directions. The "New Perfection" keeps a kitchen uniformly comfortable. Three sizes, fully warranted. If not with your dealer, write our nearest agency. STANDARD OIL COMPANY (Incorporated) Death of James Russell Death of James Russell James Russell of Matane, Quebec, father of Mrs. Minor who formerly resided here, died at his home in Canada a fortnight since. The Montreal Witness publishes a lengthy sketch of the life of deceased, from which the following excerpt is taken: James Russell, like so many other men who had much to do in laying the foundation of Canada’s greatness and in building up her material prosperity and moulding her intellectual, national and religious life, was born in Scotland. He received his early education and business training in Glasgow. When still a young man he came to Canada, and entered the service of the Grand Trunk Railway, where he occupied a responsible position for many years. Thirty-two years ago he left that corporation and went into business on his own account in the eastern part of this province. He prospered and built up a large export lumber trade. In business circles he was known as competent, diligent and reliable—a business man to be respected and trusted. In his own household Mr. Russell was a husband beloved and a father highly esteemed. His association with the congregation of Stanley Street church dated from its origin. He was one who, with about seventy others, left older congregations of this city in 1874, and were organized by the Presbytery of Montreal into a new congregation. He took his full share of the labor and expense of securing a site, building a church, removing the burden of debt which rested on it, and supporting ordinances in connection with the new cause. Although he has been far removed from Montreal for a quarter of a century, Mr. Russell continued his membership in Stanley Street church to the end, and when visiting the city he worshipped there. He was also a liberal supporter of the congregation, argement easy. Under it the court may not refuse to accept Ruef's relatives as sureties, even though it know that they were made "proprietors" in the amounts claimed transfer from the prisoner himself the purpose of bailing him out. In our words, there is nothing to pre-ride Ruef from putting up some of his to get his liberty and from tying a rope to the plunder so pledged in a manner that if he ran away he would lose no money. Also the court may not hold that personal property is insufficient as a basis for suretips. The sureties offered may never be examined under oath and the reasonable means of investigation needed without "unreasonable deeds." If the sureties perjure themselves they may be prosecuted; if the defendant should run away after adoption to bail, why, then, the bail be forfeited. It is so simple and when you understand "the law as written"! How's This? Offer One Hundred Dollars Reward for case of Catarrh that cannot be cured by its Catarrh Cure. F. J. CHENEY & CO., Toledo, O.
