Eucalyptus For Lumber
Considerable is being done at San Jose in the way of manufacturing eucalyptus trees into lumber. The common blue gum is the only variety that can be had in any large quantity and is being cut into lumber for wagons and wagon parts. It is also used for double trees, single trees, harrow frames, insulator pins for electric power lines and in fact for all purposes in which hard wood is used, including finishing lumber for houses.
Trees smaller than 18 inches in diameter are not used as there is too much waste. The trees are cut into logs and these sawed into lumber at once. The heart piece is cut out as it is found the lumber will dry straight if no heart pieces are left.
The lumber is piled in the shade to dry and should not be kiln-dried for any purpose except house finishing.
The first cut off the tree makes the best lumber both for strength and durability and is heavier than the upper parts of the tree. Trees that have been topped at 20 to 30 feet above ground do not make good lumber for any purpose except house finishing as the lumber is brittle.
When insulator pins are made they
