A large van of new furniture had just been installed in the house, and during the temporary absence of the family the residence took fire and was burned to the ground. A tramp was seen leaving the house with a handbag before the fire was discovered, and it is believed he set the house on fire to shield a robbery which he perpetrated. No insurance was carried on the building or its contents. Col. Brooker for some years past has held a position in the assessor's office in Los Angeles. Mrs. F. A. Gates presented a notable floral piece to the veterans for their Memorial Day exercises, it being a G.A.R. badge constructed of flowers. The coloring of the Stars and Stripes, as well as other portions of the emblem, was the work of artistic hands, and Mrs. Gates was the recipient of many encomiums of praise for her enterprising liberality as well as her patriotism. Horace Slater of Redlands, who is one of the promoters of the Home gas company, which seems to have gone out of business here, has applied to the city trustees of Newport for a franchise to operate a gas plant there. It was the twenty-fifth anniversary of this women's society in Southern California. The first meeting was held in the Presbyterian church here a quarter of a century ago. Mr. Fulton spent her school days here, later removing to Los Angeles, where 19 years ago she went to Japan as a missionary, being sent by Immanuel church of that city. Mrs. Fulton, her husband, who is also a missionary, and their children are spending a year's furlough in the United States, although Mrs. Fulton's present visit to California is limited to ten days, when she will leave for Portland, Oregon to join her family who are now with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Saxton, formerly of this city. The morning session, presided over by Mrs. Cleland, president of the presbyterial, was opened by devotional exercises which were led by Mrs. Newell of Los Angeles. Then followed the report of the Freedman's department by Mrs. Harris, the secretary. Mrs. Crowel, secretary of the home missions, gave a report of the work in this line. Mrs. Wheelan, secretary of foreign missions, gave a report of that work. This closed the morning session, when adjournment was taken for lunch and a social hour. A bounteous luncheon prepared and served by the ladies of the church was done full justice to by those present. The first hour of the afternoon session was devoted to reports from the secretaries of the Sunday school, christian endeavor, and junior and intermediate christian endeavor, young women's missionary and missionary band. Then followed the principal feature of the afternoon, the address by Mrs. Amy Saxton Fulton, on the work of herself and husband in Japan. Mrs. Fulton first spoke of the unfavorable surroundings and difficulties to be met in the first year of their work in Japan. J. Lawton, Mrs.V. Montgomery, Mrs. Lowe, Mrs. Smiley, Mrs. Dr. Reynolds, Mrs.W.W.Anderson, Mrs.Ella Parker, sister of Mrs.Hatzfeld of this city, Mrs.Inman and many others. Mrs.W.S.Bartlett, a former resident of Orange county, was among the ladies present from Los Angeles. John Wirsching has taken the agency of the Los Angeles Herald, and is surprising the natives by showing them what a city delivery looks like. John is strictly business from start to finish. He lost an arm while firing a Fourth of July salute at Denver a number of years ago, but never misses it, and gets along as though nothing had ever happened. Giddap, John, you're leading the bunch, and are a winner. J. H.Zitt and wife, of San Diego, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs.N.Hart the past week.
