DO YOU LOITER IN YOUR TENT?
What's the use of California republicans meeting in state convention and naming a state central committee, when that committee will have no voice whatever in the management of the campaign?
What's the use of electing delegates and sending them to Sacramento to do the party's bidding, when the Southern Pacific railroad will kindly do this work for the party? We might just as well, in view of recent occurrences, turn the party over, once for all, to the Southern Pacific railroad and have done with it. The machine is piling up infamy upon infamy upon the party, and honest men are being run out of the party.
The clean republicans of the state, in convention assembled at Sacramento, were in control of a sufficient number of assembly districts to insure their control of the newly appointed state central committee. The unhought machine up to the clean republican state to rally round the cent machine-free politics. Do we hear these game is too unclean for participate in it, that nature interests are such that think of entering politics nay, men of conscience say not so. The state you loiter in your tent?
CALLS FOR EXPLANATION
The advocates of state got a severe jolt in the convention at Sacramento they now have some plain to the rest of the people; and that the city Southern California is high type of intelligent imbued with such high government, that this was inevitable result of division.
But, alas! in the very of the citizenship of this very issue, Southern was weighed in the book found sadly wanting.
The roll of the Sacramento convention shows that North
infamy upon infamy upon the party, and honest men are being run out of the party.
The clean republicans of the state, in convention assembled at Sacramento, were in control of a sufficient number of assembly districts to insure their control of the newly appointed state central committee. The unbought, machine-free republicans named 44 members of the state central committee, while the railroad named 36, including the ever-blooming Doc McMullan of this county, who is chairman of the Orange county board of supervisors, recently had himself appointed as county school superintendent, then ducked out of it on account of the roar which greeted his ear at the sulphurous grab, and is now hankering after the nomination for sheriff.
According to the political game as played by white men, these 44 machine-free republicans should control the state central committee; but not so. The dictum has gone forth from railroad headquarters that they "lose out." The Southern Pacific railroad has consented kindly to do that work for them. Wouldn't that bump you?
The manner in which this thimble–rig game is to be played upon the party is thus: Chairman Knight has been given authority, by some dank and dark scheme of political scullduggery not yet come to light, to name the members of the state executive committee, not necessarily from the state central committee as decent politics would have it, but from the ranks of "prominent republicans throughout the state." Now wouldn't that scald you?
We read in a railroad paper the name of General George Stone suggested as a member of the execu-
the state executive committee, not necessarily from the state central committee as decent politics would have it, but from the ranks of "prominent republicans throughout the state." Now wouldn't that scald you?
We read in a railroad paper the name of General George Stone suggested as a member of the executive committee and chairman of that simple railroad device. Knight will probably appoint whomsoever Herrin tells him to; he would probably name Ruef if that scamp were not temporarily detained in jail. Frank Hatton ought to be a member of the executive committee, and so should our rotund friend Parker—all Southern Pacific employees—to round out the committee.
This is one way of riding roughshod over the republicans of the state. It is one way of raping the unbought, unpurchasable, machine-free men of the party. But these clean men of the party will rise in protest, and this protest will be heard at the August convention. There can be only one result of this riding roughshod by the railroad over the decent men of the party. It must cease, and Knight knows it, or he will turn California over to the democracy two years hence.

A PLANK SUPPRESSED
Here is a plank offered by Hon.
Lee C. Gates of Los Angeles, in the
republican state convention, to
which all honorable republicans
can subscribe to:
"While we oppose all demagogic attempts
to enact so-called 'cinch measures' or otherwise to deny to organized capital impartial
justice and full protection of the law, nevertheless we are unalterably opposed to the inference in the politics of the state by the
Southern Pacific company, its allies and assocciates, its political bureau, hired agents, poliical passes and the democratic dictator who
directs that political bureau. We regard
this as the greatest evil influence in the politiics and public affairs of California.
Republican government is in theory, and
ought to be in practice, representative of the
sober thought of the people, and this we hold
to be as true of party government as of national or state. Therefore, we look with disfavor upon these practices of appointing delegages to the state or other political conventions as tending to be subversive of the representative. Pending the enactment of a
direct primary law, universal in its application, throughout the state, we declare it to be
unrepublican and indefensible to select delegagates to any political convention otherwise
than by holding primary elections or, in
counties where primary elections cannot well
be held, then by mass meetings, duly advertised and conducted in orderly manner."
This plank should be good enough for any clean, machine-free member of the party. It has the true ring of independence about it, and is excellent political timber. Was it included in the republican platform? By no means—the very idea of such a thing! Was not the convention at Sacramento dominated by the railroad?
On the other hand, the democratic state convention at Fresno took the railroad machine by the scuff of the neck and seat of the
ment, that this would be the
able result of division.

Was it included in the republican platform? By no means—the very idea of such a thing! Was not the convention at Sacramento dominated by the railroad?
On the other hand, the democratic state convention at Fresno took the railroad machine by the scuff of the neck and seat of the pants, and cast it body and breeches out of the convention. The convention adopted a railroad plank similar in tone to that rejected by the Herrinized republican convention. Nothing the democratic party has done in twenty years has so strengthened it with the people.
Let the republicans of the state remember this. They will have to throw off the Southern Pacific yoke at the August convention, or California will go democratic in 1910.
Joseph A. Sullivan, a San Francisco capitalist, owner of a block of stock in the United Railroads, has brought suit against Abe Ruef to recover the $200,000 paid him by Pat Calhoun as a bribe to procure the overhead-trolley franchise. Meantime Ruef remains in jail, despite the fact that the jury in his bribery case disagreed. The way of the transgressor is hard.
The selection of Sim Walker as alternate delegate to the Chicago convention is characterized by as much propriety as would the selec- tion of W. F. Herrin as delegate at large—no more, no less. Both are paid employes of the railroad machine, and their only business in a republican convention is to do the bidding of their employers, without reference to the good or ill of such action upon the party.

"One lot of job chasers against another!" was the way the Espee push put it at Sacramento when referring to the machine-free republicans who were fighting to throw off the railroad collar. A baser calumny was never uttered. It was a fight of the clean men of the party against the unclean. A fight of unpurchasable, incorruptible republicans against railroad hirelings, a fight of decent men of the party against a branded lot of snipe shooters whose only business seems to be to run honest men out of the party.
How many of the delegates to the Sacramento convention heeded the county convention's instructions to them to pay their own railroad fare, and not to accept favors from the railroad in the shape of passes? How many? Hands up.
In twenty years the Southern Pacific railroad is charged with having shirked its taxes in this state to the extent of $14,500,000. Clean republicans of the state are standing together for a machine-free administration, and Mr. Harriman maybe made to dig this money up. It would build many a mile of paved road in the state.
Republicans must rid the party of the incubus of railroad domination, or they might as well get ready to hand the state over to the democrats in 1910.

The dove of peace again hovers over the relations of America and Japan. After there, Mikado, we never did think you meant it!
Delegates returning from Sacramento share the republican convention was out the worst programed affair in history of state politics. The session of Walker as alternate delegate from the Eighth district, albeit of the lesser infamies of the convention, was rushed through before change county delegates could make test. The convention was dominated railroad gagrule, and decent republicans throughout the state hung their heads in shame at the many political amities of the gathering. They are resolved never to stand for such another convention.
There were 393 appointed delegates to the state convention. In many of districts where these delegates were appointed by Herrin, clean republicans held primaries, and elected men as delegates to the convention. These honestly elected delegates are denied seats in the convention, which was more of a railroad convenion than one of the republican party. How long will the clean men of the city stand for this sort of thing?

They [those who oppose Estudillo] have never stood for anything progressive or constructive since the beginning of things. Not one in the crowd ever put one brick upon top of another in the history of the city. Their activities are confined to opposition and to an endeavor to defeat every project for the improvement of this city or county. Whether it be good roads or an Indian school or a street railway or whatever it might be, this crowd is invariably found lined up in opposition in an endeavor to pull down where they could not construct.
Dr. Flood reports a record rainfall in Trabuca canyon the other day when he and a party of trout anglers decided to make a run for this city, a distance of 30 miles. He figures that in the half hour it took them to hike out of the canyon rain fell to the extent of about half a dozen inches. The party was thoroughly drenched, and to add to their discomfort, their auto turned turtle on their way home, narrowly missing a wholesale massacre. However the doctor says it was great sport. He landed 49 trout in one day, and if the rain had not come upon them would probably have landed another and reached the limit.
