WHAT'S DOING IN POLITICS
An Orange County Man for State Senator Would Grace the Ticket—Beautiful Scrap Coming in State Convention
The consensus of opinion among leaders of the republican party here in Orange county is that a man from the lowlands for state senator would be about the right thing in this presidential year. True, a feeling exists among the conservatives that to deprive Riverside of its "turn" would be cardinal political sinning. These people seem to forget that if the numerical ratio in the Thirty-ninth district convention were reversed, and Riverside outvoted us, Orange county would never see the color of a state senator's hair from this county. Have we forgotten Mr. Caldwell, who tried so hard to break the prehistoric "turn-about" plan four years ago? There are many republicans in this county who believe in giving Riverside a modicum of its own political medicine.
Senor Estudillo seems to have the support of the push element in the highlands, and is known to have the backing of the railroad machine, along with all its yelping lickspittles and spittoon cleaners from one end of the district to the other. If Riverside has nothing better to offer than this creature of the Harriman machine, she had better keep her goods and chattels at home, for Estudillo will be a dead one long before the votes are counted in November. A strong anti-railroad democrat is what the nominee of the republican convention must figure up-protected by the law, and stuffing may be safely indulged the Herrin people.
General Stone still stoutly that "there is no Nigger in pile," to quote his own workgard to these "informals." San Francisco County Republican committee evidently disagrees General, and has about deter to call them for San Francisco riman evidently wants them For at the recent session committee, General Stone in resolution empowering the and the secretary of the state tee to hold the "informals counties where the county do not. Harriman still w "informals" at which he Taft.
General Stone takes himself ousely that he is funny. List he says about the Lincoln republican league: "A self-alleged organization has uncreate trouble in the republic It is not dangerous, but it is ous. But we venture to th considerable element of the party is behind that move ourselves, we propose to our dignified way and aid republican victory this year done many times before." eral's "'art's still true to Herrin; he is still engaged, nified way," in gaining "gre can victories." backing of the railroad machine, along with all its yelping lickspittles and spittoon cleaners from one end of the district to the other. If Riverside has nothing better to offer than this creature of the Harriman machine, she had better keep her goods and chattels at home, for Estudillo will be a dead one long before the votes are counted in November. A strong anti-railroad democrat is what the nominee of the republican convention must figure upon. Estudillo did his level best to euchre Orange county out of the state experiment station, and the lowlanders have a rod in pickle for him for that. He stood for putting a joker in the bill creating the station so that Riverside could have no opposition, and he stood out against giving Orange county a square deal in that embroglio. Mr. Estudillo will not do, and when in addition to all this, he is nothing more nor less than a creature of the machine which is seeking to ambush Taft in California, mention of his name as a candidate for state senator is calculated to turn the stomach of loyal members of the party.
There is looming upon the horizon a beautiful scrap in the state convention at Sacramento next month, when the push and reformers come together in the selection of delegates to the Chicago convention. The railroad slate includes George Knight, Mike de Young, Gen. Otis and Gov. Gillett as candidates for delegates at large. The reformers have Dr. Pardoe, Frank Short, U.S. Grant and Judge Melvin to run against them. The Santa Cruz convention left hard feelings all round, and the scrap bids fair to be taken up in earnest at Sacramento next month. There will be another state convention in August, to nominate candidates for presidential electors, congressmen and other officials, and the fight will probably be continued. A spirit of rebellion is rife against the railroad machine in this state, and this spirit permeates every hamlet and every city in the commonwealth.
Here are some interesting political paragraphs from the Oakland Enquirer:
Herrin has evidently "taken water" on the "informal primary." That is, his Republican State Committee met the other day and adopted General
Here are some interesting political paragraphs from the Oakland Enquirer:
Herrin has evidently "taken water" on the "informal primary." That is, his Republican State Committee met the other day and adopted General Stone's resolution changing the date of the "informals" from May 3rd to May 5th, the date of the regular primaries. Of course, the General is quite vociferous in his protestations that he is still for Taft. But nobody has yet forgotten that Parker, Herrin's Lieutenant and the General's superior in Harriman's California political bureau, refused to permit the State Committee to indorse Taft when the committee met a few weeks ago. Instead of indorsing Taft, the committee adopted the Herrin-Stone resolution calling for "informal primaries" on May 2nd, at which the Republicans of California were "invited to indicate their choice for President and Vice President." At that time Harriman still "ad opes" of beating Taft. And General Stone's innocent little Herrin resolution, which he said was in the nature of a "direct primary" was intended to give Herrin's "merry men" an opportunity to prove, by ballot-box stuffing and all sorts of "skullduggery" that this State is not for Tft. You see, at "informal primaries," there is no protection of law against ballot-box stuffing. And Harriman hates Taft enough to make him order the stuffing of ballot-boxes, if a little thing like that would do anything toward the beating of Taft. Even the "informals" on May 5th will not be
