ARMSTRONG FLAYS“CANUCK”
Writes Stinging Rebuke to Correspondent of Canadian Paper Misrepresenting this Section
T. S. Armstrong of this city has written the following letter to the Fergus (Can.) News Record in reply to a communication recently appearing therein from a correspondent signing himself Canuck and making a covert attack upon the climate and surroundings of this section:
Anaheim, Cal., March 8.
Editor News Record:—
Dear Sir:—Was very much amused to read in your issue of 27th of February a description given to California by a party who signs himself a “Canuck,” one, I judge, who not being willing to work for his daily bread in his native land made a bee line for California where his imaginations told him he could pick up the “filthy lucre” (gold) without working for it. Oh, no! but finding his mistake took to the desert of Arizona where the winds blew his eyes and nose full of sand, and over the hills finally landing back again among his dear friends who would care for him in dear old Canada. (Very ambitious, eh!)
A “Canuck,” as he signs himself, suggests that I move Fergus out to California. Well, if all my good Fergus friends were like him I would not undertake the job, as I am happy now with my surroundings and would not be then.
He goes on to describe what he calls chimney off your house, burns a barn or two. Of course nothing in comparison to California.
As to being loyal, I am a blue blood Canuck," and will true to my native land. First, and I venture to say thousand of the inhabitants were to come to California and see what we have here dred of them would never mean to live. Only sore heart "A Canuck" go back.
Of all the many letters received since coming to Californiing my advice, etc., about Cain in every instance say, "Do not advice; I can't please every person has enough money and see the country, well and Yours truly,

Catholic Priest Opposes A Liberty
Reverend Father J. J. McMary's Roman Catholic Elgin, Illinois, preached recently on the liquor queen has aroused much favorable from all parts of the country.
The ministers at the head of the nation movement were likened "searches after dirt with a hard to save the souls of some aldermen as they do to "take from the poor laboring men good would be done.

over the hills usually landing back again among his dear friends who would care for him in dear old Canada. (Very ambitious, eh!)
A "Canuck," as he signs himself, suggests that I move Fergus out to California. Well, if all my good Fergus friends were like him I would not undertake the job, as I am happy now with my surroundings and would not be then.
He goes on to describe what he calls a "Santa Anna." What is it? I have not seen anything such as he describes since I came out here four years ago. I have seen just as bad wind and dust storms in Fergus as I have seen here. Years ago before the country was very much settled there may have been some wind storms down the canyon from the desert, when your correspondent, a Canuck, was "hiking" over the sands for his dear old home in Canada. No such thing as he describes here.
He next attacks the climate and says it becomes very monotonous to healthy people. I don't know where he was to find it such unless it was in San Quinten penitentiary; for you can get all kinds of climate in California from sunny warm weather in the valleys to snow-capped mountains within two hours from Anaheim. One thing I do know, that there are numbers of people here in Anaheim who have added years to their lives by coming to California.
As to the rainy season, the truth is we get our first rain along in November and we are very thankful if we get an inch then. We may not have any more for weeks; all we get is an occasional shower. This season there has fallen a little over nine inches since November, but we will have a few more showers yet. The country does not get all dried up as he says, because irrigation is becoming so general and so many trees planted that a person does not notice the conditions as he describes it.
Another drawback, he says, is the "plague of insects." If he had kept himself clean while in California he would have had no fleas on himself. As to mosquitoes and flies, I have seen 10 in Fergus for every one I have seen here, and yet he is glad when winter time comes so that he won't have to work so hard to kill off all the insects that worry him. Ha! ha!
No sports in California, eh? I think there is too much of it here. All the young people seem to think about it from the poor laboring men good would be done.
"Brethren, I beseech Father McCann, while you put in a clause that you will the local option movement sweeping the country.
"Every time you vote for you vote against the rights of poor men. Local option for the rich. They do not to the saloons.
"Their wine cellars are full have all they want to drink privacy of their homes. But laboring man wants a glass law comes and says he can.
"There is absolutely no day saloons if they are produced. The Sunday saloon man's club. The rich man private club of his own, wipe liquor every day and night round.
"He does not have to go loon, and so he is for local or long as the people—the labor—behave themselves, they shi their beer the same as they has his wine.
"It is time these preachers in for something better than ing for dirt with a spyglass. The men and church members moral suasion than all the frequent Sunday saloons."
The ministers of Elgin busily engaged for some time $3000 local option camp Father McCann said he was join this movement, but refuse anything to do with it, because lieved it wrong.
ADVISES SALE OF LIFE
Dr. Parkhurst Advocates Revision day Law—Clergyman Who Suffered Vice Crusade in New York Another Plan
(Special dispatch to the Chicago Lodge)
NEW YORK, Feb. 28.—That of liquor should be permitted certain hours on Sunday was made by Dr. Charles H. Parkhurst of the Madison Square Preschool, to-day.
CRUSADE AGAINST CRIME
A few years ago Dr. Parkhurst ed a crusade against crime York.
He says now that he would the sale of liquor on certain the Sabbath if the community ed the practice, on the theory laws backed by popular will forced, and unenforced laws degeneracy of morals.
Dr. Parkhurst's interview w
"plague of insects." If he had kept himself clean while in California he would have had no fleas on himself. As to mosquitoes and flies, I have seen 10 in Fergus for every one I have seen here, and yet he is glad when winter time comes so that he won't have to work so hard to kill off all the insects that worry him. Ha! ha!
No sports in California, eh? I think there is too much of it here. All the young people seem to think about is sport and having a good time. What is to be compared to a plunge in the breakers on the beaches in the bright sunshine?
Then he says the people make a living out of the tourists and tenderfoots: Why, of course. They are both necessary evils. What would a tenderfoot know about the conditions of land, orchards, etc., in California if someone would not show him the condition and requirements of soil, etc. I say California needs real estate agents. Some are honest and some are not, just as you will find, Mr. Editor, in all countries.
Tourists we like to see come for they spend lots of money and the country has to grow immense quantities of produce to supply their want, thereby enriching the country to that extent.
"A Canuck" admits you still have some storms in Canada, and occasionally you don't get any trains for two or three days at a time. Yes! Hardships it must be, but see how "hardy" it makes you. Why, a person can put up with six or seven months of such weather (hugging the stove, as I imagine I see "A Canuck" doing, some one else supplying the coal) to enjoy the good old summer time of June when an occasional electric storm comes up perhaps twice a week and knocks the
off your house, or perhaps barn or two. Of course that is in comparison to "fleas" in India.
being loyal, I am still a "true God Canuck," and will always be my native land. But health and I venture to say that if one of the inhabitants of Fergus come to California in a body what we have here, eight hunts them would never go back, I live. Only sore heads such as back" go back.
the many letters I have received coming to California ask advice, etc., about California, I instance say, "Don't take my I can't please everybody." If he has enough money to come the country, well and good.
Yours truly,
THOS. S. ARMSTRONG.

and Father J. J. McCann of St. Roman Catholic church of Illinois, preached a sermon re-ion the liquor question which used much favorable comment parts of the country.

aren, I beseech you," said McCann, while you are making New Year's resolutions, that you clause that you will not join option movement that is in the country.
my time you vote for local option against the rights of thousands then. Local option is all right rich. They do not have to go moons.
wine cellars are full and they question of prohibition by statute.
"I believe in the passage of laws only so stringent as to be sure of the endorsement of the average sentiment of the community. If you enact laws beyond that point your statute will not be enforced, and a statute that is not enforced is a great deal worse than no statute at all," he said.
"The degeneracy of morals in our country is due to a considerable extent to the fact that the legislation has been above the tone of the country's moral sentiment."
