It is already a great and rich county, but the developing of its resources is only beginning. In only a few localities is the land brought up to anything like the limit of its possibilities. It can be made to support many times its present population. The coming of the people will make it necessary to subdivide the acreage tracts and to get the best possible results from the soil. And the people are flocking to this coast in increasing numbers. This county, because of its natural possibilities, will get more than its pro rata share of the newcomers. This will make intensive farming more essential and help to make the Orange county that is to be. There is not a bit of poetry in these assertions, it is all cold fact, says the Santa Ana Register. Take the peat lands which are already famous the country over. Some very profitable crops of celery are on record, but as a whole these lands have been made to yield little of their possible results—take the territory as a whole. The last word about celery growing has not yet been said. Experience will secure results better than at present. The putting in of new drainage ditches will redeem some of the lands now not very valuable. The bringing in of capital will make it possible to reclaim sections now of comparatively little value. When the Santa Ana river is put under proper control a large territory will immediately advance, both in price and utility. This is only an instance where development is just begun. There is a section toward Newport from Santa Ana, where now there is alkali in abundance, and swampy stretches are in evidence. But it is only a matter of effort and capital and patience to redeem these lands and make them of high value.
