The Big Sixteen
San Diego, March 17.—It is announced that all the transportation committees have granted material reductions in rates to and from San Diego for the first American reception to the battleship fleet, which will be held when the fleet reaches this port on April 27th. The demonstration will last throughout four days—possibly five.
The transportation committee has received word from the Santa Fe railway, the Southern Pacific, and the Salt Lake railways, and from the Pacific Coast Steamship company and the California Development steamship company, that all these lines will grant a return-trip rate not to exceed one and one-third fare for the round trip, and possibly to be lower than that. The Pacific Coast Steamship company announces that one or more of its steamers will carry passengers to and from the fleet while the fleet is anchored in San Diego harbor, and that a special excursion steamer will also be sent down from San Francisco, which will be used for excursions during the day and as a lodging-house at night, with a probable berth rate of one dollar per night. Captain Cresswell stated that he would have six of the largest launches in San Pedro harbor brought down to San Diego while the battleships are here, and that these would supplement the San Diego launches in carrying visitors to and from the battleships.
April 27th is given as the probable date of the fleet's arrival but the Decay in Wood Prevail
It is estimated that a fenestration which under ordinary circumstances will last for perhaps two years if given preservative treatment about 10 cents, last 4 years. The service of other such as railroad ties, telephone and mine props, can be doubled often trebled by inexpensive vative treatment. Today, we cost of wood is a big item farmer, every stockman, every road manager, to everyone, who must use timber when likely to decay, this is a fact should be carefully considered.
It is easy to see that if time timbers can be used bled, only half as much time be required as before and only half as much money will need spent in the purchase of. Moreover, many woods which for a long time considered worthless, can be treated and to last as long as the scarce more expensive kinds.
It is estimated that 150,000 are required each year to get ber for the anthracite coal alone. The average life of treated mine prop is not more three years. By proper protective treatment it can be protected by many times this figure: phone and telegraph poles, ten or twelve years, or even decay so badly at the ground they have to be removed, or simple treatment of their made to last twenty or twentieth.
Captain Cresswell stated that he would have six of the largest launches in San Pedro harbor brought down to San Diego while the battleships are here, and that these would supplement the San Diego launches in carrying visitors to and from the battleships.
April 27th is given as the probable date of the fleet's arrival, but the day is not positively fixed. It may be a little earlier or a little later than that.
Upon their arrival here the officers and the men of the fleet will get the first notes of a welcome that will ring throughout the entire west. Port of Spain, Rio, Punta Arenas and Callao have set a mark for hospitality difficult to surpass; but the return to native shores will be marked by the most elaborate receptions and demonstrations the enthusiastic residents of the city can devise.
With less than one third of the time gone, the finance committee of the Evans fleet celebration has raised $12,500 of the $20,000 fund which is to be devoted to the first great Pacific coast welcome to the fleet of American battleships when they arrive at this port next month. Last Monday's receipts were $892 in cash; those of Tuesday were nearly $500. Members of the committee report that San Diegans are promptly responding to the demands of the man who passes the hat.
Five hundred sailors from the Tennessee and the Washington have been granted shore liberty each day since the "pathfinder" squadron first anchored here. They have been entertained by the townspeople, and are themselves planning an entertainment in return. There is a first-class minstrel troupe composed of members of the Tennessee's crew, and they recently gave a performance at the Garrick theatre, the proceeds being devoted to the widows' and orphans' fund of the United States navy.

The protected cruiser Albany came into port Tuesday afternoon, and about 100 of her men were given shore leave. The Albany is expected to remain here several weeks, probably until nearly the time for the arrival of the battle-ships. The people of this city and the numerous tourists here are not waiting the coming of the fleet to begin visiting the ships that are here. Each day there is a string of launches going to and fro between the shore and the Tennessee, the Washington and the Albany.

Wood in Wood Prevented
Animated that a fence post, under ordinary circumstances or perhaps two years, will, preservative treatment cost 10 cents, last eighteen the service of other timbers, railroad ties, telephone poles props, can be doubled and used by inexpensive preservation. Today, when the wood is a big item to every stockman, every railroader, to everyone, in fact use timber where it is decay, this is a fact which carefully considered.
By to see that if the length timbers can be used is doubled half as much timber will need as before and only one-third money will need to be the purchase of timber. Many woods which were time considered almost long as the scarcer and invasive kinds.
Animated that 150,000 acres each year to grow timber anthracite coal mines the average life of an untreated prop is not more than five. By proper preservation it can be prolonged times this figure. Teletelegraph poles, which in five years, or even less, deeply at the ground line that to be removed, can, by a treatment of their butts, be twenty or twenty-five can easily be treated and made to outlast even painted shingles of the most decay-resistant woods. Thousands of dollars are lost every year by the socalled "bluing" of freshly sawed sapwood lumber. This can be prevented by proper treatment, and at a cost so small as to put it within the reach of the smallest operator.
In the south the cheap and abundant loblolly pine, one of the easiest of all woods to treat, can by proper preparation be made to take the place of the high-grade longleaf pine for many purposes. Black and tupelo gums and other little used woods have a new and increasing importance because of the possibility of preserving them from decay at small cost. In the Northeastern and Lake States are tamarack, hemlock, beech, birch, and maple, and red and black oaks, all of which by proper treatment may help to replace the fast diminishing white oak and cedar. In the states of the Mississippi Valley the pressing fence-post problem may be greatly relieved by treating such species as cottonwood, willow, and hackberry.
Circular 139 of the Forest Service, "A Primer of Wood Preservation," tells in simple terms what decay is and how it can be retarded, describes briefly certain preservatives and processes, gives examples of the saving in dollars and cents, and tells what wood preservation can do in the future. The circular, can be had free upon application to the Forester, Forest Service, Washington, D.C.
