Reports coming from a number of districts state that the fruit is beginning to fail, and it is expected there will be a great demand for cars within the next few days. It is anticipated there will be at least 100 cars a day this week, whereas the total for all of last week was 518 cars. Within the present warm weather, it is expected that icing the cars will also begin. Advt. The Anti-Saloon League Sham The following article recently appeared in The Crown, a religious sheet published under the auspices of St. Stephen’s Protestant Episcopal Church at Newark, New Jersey: I have read with much interest Mr. F. M. Palmatier’s letters in the issues of the Evening News of December 11th and December 18th. This gentleman is a Prohibitionist who would have the ministers ‘called back to their legitimate work.’ It is a matter of surprise that neither Mr. Palmatier nor the public by this time have penetrated the cunning devices of the Anti-Saloon League, which is mainly responsible for this condition of affairs. To abolish the saloon as an institution is not at all the aim of the League, notwithstanding its cognomen; for were the saloons wiped from the UnCLAIMED LETTER Unclaimed letters in the postoffice for week ending M. This is such an experiment has been is a Prohibitionist who would have the ministers 'called back to their legitimate work.' It is a matter of surprise that neither Mr. Palmatier nor the public by this time have penetrated the cunning devices of the Anti-Saloon League, which is mainly responsible for this condition of affairs. To abolish the saloon as an institution is not at all the aim of the League, notwithstanding its cognomen; for were the saloons wiped from the face of the earth, Othello's occupation would be gone. The subject must by all means be kept alive and agitated. Tantalus must be tortured, but never perish. The anti-saloon orator must occupy the center of the stage, incidentally supported by the ministers whose scruples he has conquered. This orator is the specialist appointed by the League whose self-imposed purpose seems to be to call the ministers to their 'duty.' The blare of trumpets and the beating of tom toms must be kept up. Unlike revivals, this performance must be continuous. Who is the Central Star around which the unsuspecting clergy rotate? The Anti-Saloon League orator. The entire performance redounds to only the League's credit. The clergy have listened to the voice of the charmer and will too late realize that the gentle suasion practiced soon grows into the voice of command. The question so often raised, 'Why don't more men enter the ministry of the various denominations?' is answered by the fact that many men trained for the ministry yield to the seduction of larger emoluments and agreeable work and opportunities for advancement offered by service in the Anti-Saloon League throughout the country. When religion is so cheapened, can we wonder that spirituality is anaemic? G. W. Schreiber's Plain Talk The members of Company L of Santa Ana assembled at their armory Friday evening in response to an order from Captain Greenleaf. The call was made at the request of Colonel-elect W. G. Schreiber, who was present and gave the men and officers a good talk. Colonel Schreiber said in part: "I came down here to see what was the matter. Colonel Wilhelm has reported that things were in pretty poor shape and I requested him to withhold his report until I could see what was wrong and if there was any way in which this company could be put in good shape again." "I don't want to see Company L mustered out of the service. I don't want to see any company of the Seventh Regiment mustered out, and if there is a way to remedy matters here I will do all I can to help you. "If the trouble is with your non-commissioned officers, get rid of them. It is an easy matter to take their stripes off. If the trouble is with your commissioned officers, it is an easier matter to have them step out. After I get through with the talk we are going to have a little work and I think I can see where the trouble lies. "I am not in favor of making threats and what I am going to say is not in the spirit of a threat, but is the cold-blooded military fact. If Company L is mustered out of the service, Santa Ana will never be able to have another company. One company was mustered out here and the authorities higher up would never consent to put a company back here another time. "You will be inspected again in about three months and in that time it is possible to build up this company to the standard demand by the movement. Here you see what you buy before you put up your money, and you get your goods instantly in place of waiting a month or more. The logical outcome of the continued growth of the mail order trade will be the destruction of the present retail system by which the country towns and smaller cities are maintained. Many country buyers are thoughtless. Lured by deceiving advertisements, they patronize catalog houses under the impression that they will receive as good goods at lower prices than the local dealer can furnish. There may be a few lines of goods which they can buy cheaper from the catalog concerns, but as a rule the dealer gives better value, and he not only gives better value, but he is a large taxpayer, helps support your schools, churches, societies, builds your roads and is one of your enterprising, public spirited citizens, and he keeps a lot of your money at home and away from congested centers of population, thus keeping them from becoming more congested. Every mail order purchase is a blow to the home town, and it only requires a few such blows to cause a shrinkage in farm values. Again, we repeat, bring in your catalogs, and we will meet or beat the prices of the deceptive catalog house. We find that we are able to meet all honest competition, now let us show you how easy we can meet dishonest competition Wickersheim Implement Company Fullerton, Cal.
