IDAHO TIMBER TESTS For What Purposes and Uses the Timbers are Best Adapted—Species May Be Used for Railroad Ties and Trestles [CORRESPONDENCE OF THE GAZETTE] Washington, Feb. 4.—The State university of Idaho, located at Moscow, has just entered into a co-operative agreement with the United States forest service to carry on a series of tests to determine the relative value of the commercial timbers of the state. All the tests will be made at the university in accordance with the methods used by the government, and at least once a year a testing engineer of the forest service will make a careful inspection and report upon the progress of the work. These tests will be of considerable value in ascertaining for what purposes and uses the timbers of Idaho are best adapted. Bridge stringers will be tested to determine the fitness of different species for the construction of trestles and bridges; the spike-holding power will also be investigated to determine just what species can be advantageously used for railroad ties and tests will be made to determine the relative hardiness, which property is very important in material used for paving blocks. The forest service at other laboratories in various parts of the country is making tests on important timbers from other sections, and using old salting grounds used in various seasons, tramping the plants instead of eating them on the ground, and in other ways setting the range. But if they are supplied, they scatter over the pasture grounds and their leisure. Salt is so necessary to the profitable handling of shear range, that no flockmaster would get along without it. Do not receive their usual supply only with great difficulty than be held in bonds or kept in night. So far as sheep are no regulation by law is really because the owners, for their venience, will salt their fleece are not herded, and they might neglect to salt them, limitations were not strictly enforced. Stock on different ranges varying quantities of salt. Less on dry range than on average quantity for 1,000 hectares would be from 1,000 to 1,500 years. For a like number of 5,000 to 10,000 pounds a year in Horses need less then cattle. Old hunters, in the days of neers, knew that deer and beeled long distences to lick salt springs. The Blue Licks on River, in Kentucky, and mineral spring on Elk River, Virginia, were famous for the deer, buffalo and elk which them. The forest service at other laboratories in various parts of the country is making tests on important timbers from other sections, and by co-operating with the service the university will secure results which will furnish an accurate basis for comparing Idaho timber with timber from other states. At this period when the supply of different species which practical utilization has shown to be well adapted to the needs of various industries is being rapidly exhausted, substitutes for the disappearing species are being eagerly sought. The timber tests as carried on by the government are designed to show hard, tough, stiff and strong different woods are, in this way making it possible to determine intelligently what species will best serve as substitutes for the ones nearing exhaustion. The results of the investigations will be published from time to time and distributed to the individuals and corporations interested in the use of forest products. Coopers Find Substitute Woods The coopers of the United States are probably suffering more at the present time for want of a supply of timber than the men of any other wood–using industry. This condition is caused largely by the great decrease in the supply of those woods considered necessary for cooperage stock, and the lack of knowledge of the merits of such species of wood as might possibly be used as substitutes. A few years ago, the cooperage manufacturers of the Pacific coast obtained their supply of timber from the east, using very largely the better cooperage woods, such as white oak and elm. Recently, these manufacturers... of those woods considered necessary for cooperage stock, and the lack of knowledge of the merits of such species of wood as might possibly be used as substitutes. A few years ago, the cooperage manufacturers of the Pacific coast obtained their supply of timber from the east, using very largely the better cooperage woods, such as white oak and elm. Recently, these manufacturers have been using, with reasonable success various species of wood native to their immediate section. Sitka spruce is now largely used on the Pacific coast for such slack cooperage as flour, sugar, lime and bottle barrels, and tight cooperage, such as vinegar, pickle and cider barrels, butter and cheese cooperage, buckets and pails. Recently, wine barrels have been made from Sitka spruce, these being coated inside with a high grade of paraffine. Douglas fir is also used to some extent. Inferior grades of slack cooperage, such as salt and lime barrels, are sometimes made of white fir. Salt for Horses and Cattle The requirement that all cattle, horses and sheep grazing under permit on the National Forests be given salt at frequent intervals is a regulation which has been found to go a long way in protecting the range and conserving the forage crop. Experience has shown that the want of salt makes stock restless. If cattle and horses are not supplied as they need it, they roam and wander, hunt- FIRST WELCOME TO FLEET Program of Exercises to Be Observed at San Diego, First town on Coast to Welcome Ships San Diego, which was the cradle of civilization on the Pacific coast of this continent, and is the oldest town in California, will be the scene of the first home greeting to the American battleship fleet under Admiral Evans, and the first American port in which that fleet will cast anchor after its memorable voyage. W. Pendleton of Los Angeles. Pendleton will endeavor to get the Supreme Court to pass on the validity of the Orange county prohibition ordinance. His contention will be, if he can get it before the court, that the ordinance is unreasonable in that it prohibits the manufacturer of wine and brandy from selling his product. This will be perhaps the most important test ever put upon the ordinance, and if it stands fire winery men will have lost the one point on which they have claimed the right to sell liquor. There will be no time wasted about securing the funds with which to build the proposed road from Tustin to Santa Ana and on to Huntington Beach, a distance of eleven miles.
