Annual Water Election The annual election for directors of the Anaheim Union Water Company occurs on Saturday next, but indications point to no quorum. Clarence McFadden and E. E. Beazley of Placentia have been soliciting stock for some weeks past and are understood to have in the neighborhood of 1800 shares. Mr. Denham of Placentia is also out for stock, but is not considered a candidate. McFadden and Beazley have taken large blocks of stock away from Hale and Drake, and incursions have been made into the territory of Kraemer and Bradford. Members of the board are not soliciting stock to any appreciable extent, but have taken up blocks here and there to prevent them from falling into the hands of new candidates. The city has 2300 shares, which entitles it to two out of the seven directors. This stock is now represented by only one director, and the balance, so leading irrigators say, can be had by members of the old board if they want it. However a number of southside irrigators declare that if a change is to be made upon the board, another director must be elected to represent this portion of the district. Of members of the present board and prospective candidates, six hail from titles it to two out of the seven directors. While indications point to no quorum, nevertheless an informal meeting will probably be held and many important matters discussed. Laid In the Tomb Funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon for Mrs. B. V. Beebe, whose death was announced in our last week's issue. The obsequies were under auspices of the Rebekahs, of which deceased had been in her lifetime a member. Members of the Rebekahs and Fraternal Brotherhood marched to the residence on Philadelphia street, where a large concourse of friends gathered at 2 o'clock. The casket was covered with a profusion of floral offerings. many handsome designs being conspicuous. Rev. Mitchell conducted the burial services, and a chorus consisting of Mrs. McLauchlin, Miss Ames, Miss Rea and Mr. Wickett rendered vocal selections. Dr. Smith Flew De Coop Tuesday evening's mail brought us the following postal card from Los Angeles: Los Angeles, Cal., Feb. 25, '08. Dear Sir—Please discontinue my ad from date. Will write you later. Respectfully, Dr. H. J. Smith. The doctor's office door was found to be locked yesterday, and his sign had been removed from the door. We shall miss the suave globe-trotter, and the sanitarium he talked about erecting here. We shall also miss the $6 25 for advertising which he failed to pay. Dr. Smith blew into town a month or more ago. He had been recommended to come here, he said, and would erect a sanitarium large enough to treat 100 patients. These patients had already been secured in Colorado. His partner, he said, operated a sanitarium in Denver. People from the coast went to Denver for treatment, while those from the Rocky mountain region would come here. The doctor was very anxious to learn the standing and character of the local medicos, and said his office equipment would make that of the other doctors look like thirty cents. He wanted to know how long it would take him to "catch on," and expressed the opinion that he would do so in a month. He did so. Fine Cabbage Crop William Geerdes, who owns ten acres south of the power house, has five acres set to cabbage which promises a fine crop, some of it being ready for harvest. He will also plant several acres of potatoes, as well as barley, and is placing the tract in fine condition. Mr. Geerdes was for twenty-one years a street-car conductor in Chicago, but resigned his position a year ago to come to California for the benefit of his health. He recently received a letter from the superintendent of the street-railway system, paying him a high compliment for his efficient service, and wishing him success in his new home. In his long term of service Mr. Geerdes was never late a minute in reporting for duty. Since coming to Anaheim he has turned his hand to farming, and is making a success of it. He and his wife are pleasantly situated in a neat new cottage on South Los Angeles street, and as they enjoy this delightful sunshine feel sorry for people who are compelled to reside in the blizzard belt back east. Medal Contest An unusual event took place last Fri Medal Contest An unusual event took place last Friday evening in the Presbyterian church. Seven of our Anaheim young girls gave temperance recitations in competition for a silver medal to be awarded by the Woman's Christian Temperance Union to the best speaker decided upon by three competent judges. The contestants were to be graded in rendering their selections according to voice, articulation, gesture, memory and general effect. The speakers were Elsie Jester, Irene Mills, Ruby Barnholdt, Fanny Click, Adelaide Gates, Lilian Rawlins and Bernice Lagorgue. The medal was awarded to Ruby Barnholdt, she having received the highest number of points according to the decision of the judges. Two others received a special mention while all did admirably well, especially considering this was their first attempt at public speaking. The judges were C. C. Chapman of Fullerton, Mr. Kellogg and Mrs. Rodgers of Santa Ana. Mrs. Noll of Los Angeles Presided over the meeting in place of Mrs. Rush the local superintendent of medal contest work. Other contests will be given in the future. J. E. Franklin of Los Angeles, division chief clerk of the Sunset telephone company, was in town on Saturday, a guest of Wm. Schwenckert.
