The placement of another teacher was necessary by the crowded condition of Central school. One of the teachers Miss Record, has in her room rollment of 64, with an average attendance of 54. Miss Kinder begins ing on Monday. She is the eight teacher now employed in the school this city. County Superintendent pentrer is on record as saying schools of this city are the best county.

Grand Lecturer Baker of the M.A. order was here from San Francisco holding a school of instruction on day and Saturday forenoon. Victor Browning came in from Brookhurst on Friday evening to hear the high school debate. Vic's son Harold is a student at Poly, and was in the bunch of rooters who came down to make things pleasant at the debate.
Miss Alice Hatfield was here from Los Angeles this week inquiring after the condition of her mother and two sisters, who are recovering from attacks of smallpox. The residence on West street has been under close quarantine to prevent a spread of the contagion.

Alvin Asher celebrated his fifth birthday on Saturday afternoon, when he entertained a party of his young friends at an enjoyable gathering at his parents’ home on Broadway. The youngsters played circus, football, drop the handkerchief, pining the tail to the donkey and bull in the ring. A large birthday cake, candy, chocolate and other delicies were discussed, and all hands joined in the expression that they had had a way-up time.

Mrs. Rosina Steley, former city, now a resident of Santa Barbara celebrated her 69th birthday day, when a most enjoyable event. Among the guests were Mrs. Schweitzer of Mrs. C. Meyerel and daughter Meyerel, of Los Angeles, and Mrs. Wm. Kretschmer and sister of this city.
