NEW SEEDS AND PLANTS
Annual Distribution by the Agricultural Experiment Station at Berkeley—How to Get Them
BY E. J. WICKSON AND R. E. MANSELL
Interest in this form of distribution, which has been maintained by this station since 1880, when it began in a small way, has during recent years increased notably. The weak point in the distribution is that too many recipients forget the obligation they assume, viz., to report to us the results of their trials of the plants which we introduce to them. We desire to know of both successes and failures, of both value and worthlessness found in the plants, in order that their behavior in the hands of our co-operating experimenters may be clearly made out.
AIMS AND METHODS OF DISTRIBUTION
To reduce as much as practicable the vast amount of correspondence which is entailed upon the station by the distribution, we desire that the following points should be carefully considered by the applicants:
First—Do not apply for things not mentioned in this bulletin: We cannot usually supply things previously offered for distribution.
Second—We require the applicant to pay a small amount for each article, partly to bear the cost of collection and distribution, but chiefly as a guaranty that he has not merely an idle desire for what can be had for nothing, but intends to make trial for a definite end and will report results to us.
Third—Applications may be made for one or more kinds of seeds, but an applicant should not order more than Santa Monica, but it blooms during the late fall and early bloom is worked by large bees.
5—Diversicolor—One of the growing trees in Australia, a very valuable wood for wagons.
6—Eugenioides—This strain produces a fairly durable tree that can be used in bulbs though it is of slow growth.
7—Gunnii—One of the hardest in Australia. It attains a fast country.
8—Leucoxylon—An upright rather rapid grower and the very hard and durable. The found growing in the southern state. Bloom during winter.
9—Melliodora—Produces a viable for wagon work, etc. In with the soil it is very durable is one of the best bee trees and eucalyptus and is in bloom and early spring.
10—Piperita—An upright and spreading growth. The wood able for shingles and other purposes, while the leaves are volatile oil.

If the supply of any kind of seed becomes exhausted the money will be returned, unless a second choice is mentioned by the sender. Postal notes are requested instead of stamps.
THE CAMPHOR TREE
This beautiful light-green, evergreen tree is very hardy from a California point of view. The seed which we offer this year was taken from an old tree growing at our branch station near Tulare, where the minimum temperature record during the life of the tree is 18 deg. Fahr. This frost killed some of the lower leaves and small laterals but the upper parts of the tree were untouched. This observation constitutes the camphor hardier than the olive, the orange, the blue gum (Eucalyptus globulus) and others of the less hardy eucalyptus. At Tulare also the camphor tree demonstrates its resistance to a small amount of alkali.
Although the camphor tree on the east coast of Asia is the basis of important industries in the production of camphor gum and camphor wood it has thus far been grown in California only as an ornamental. It is of handsome form and commanding size; in its habitat it attains a height of 100 feet and a trunk upwards of 3 feet in diameter. California trees have attained about half those dimensions in about thirty years. It is satisfactory as a single door yard tree, or in clumps or as a street tree where an evergreen is desired. Seed in packets, 5c postpaid.
EUCALYPTUS TREES
The interest in eucalyptus planting which is now keener and wider than in any previous year since this important genus was introduced from Australia over fifty years ago. This interest is inciting commercial propagators and our nurseries are therefore offering large collections of well grown trees at prices which encourage distribution.
Adjutant-General Lauck of the fornia national guard is on his Washington to confer with the department relative to federal legislation to be erected upon coasts in this state. A significant measure the recent friction between the States government and Japan, leading to Washington advices, is the moning to the national capital adjutant generals of California, ington and Oregon, presumably wise with the war department relating the best locations in their native states for defensive works tracts of land for such purposes as the federal government might see.
It is intimated that the President desires to consult with the statecers regarding the strategic that can be fortified and also to inform what assistance can be expected to the coast states in the matter of retaining grants to the federal government of land tracts that might be needed for defensive works.
Just before the meeting of conference one or more members of the Californi delegation prepared bills which intended to secure a close prohibition of Japanese immigration. It was announced semi-officially that the government was opposed to further invidious legislation. Mr. Root Viscount Aoki that this governor would endeavor to see that there be no legislation to irritate Japan the Mikado would act sincerely in matter of prohibition of immigration Baron Hayashi stated that his government would carry out such a Secretary Root has received confirmation of all this.
Since the recall of Ambassador who has started to Tokio to inform government on the feeling in America regarding the Japanese, President Roosevelt has repeatedly instructed the California delegation that no tempt must be made to pass a Japanese exclusion law. Relying upon president's assurances, Senator Benson and the members of the House California ceased agitating for exsion, though they have made

The interest in eucalyptus planting which is now keener and wider than in any previous year since this important genus was introduced from Australia over fifty years ago. This interest is inciting commercial propagators and our nurseries are therefore offering large collections of well grown trees at prices which encourage forest and wood lot planting. Aside from species thus available we have several growing at the university forestry station at Santa Monica from which seed has been gathered for this distribution to those who desire to grow species which usually do not enter into large plantings: An upright and spreading tree highly recommended by all the Australian writers, as one of their best timber trees, if it is grown where there is plenty of water. The first 14 months after the young grove was put on the station grounds at Santa Monica the average height was nearly 13 feet. It will stand a small amount of frost.
2—Eucalyptus Citriodora—Very ornamental, having lavender and cream colored deciduous bark, the leaves are long and narrow, the branches are pendent, giving the trees a weeping effect. The wood is claimed by Australians to be valuable for wagonwork.
3—Eucalyptus Cornuta—This variety is a dwarf, having very small, thick, dark green leaves. The flowers are of a dark green color and are in bloom during the late fall. The variety is a curiosity, capable of forming a good shade tree if properly trained.

When this condition exists, do not foolishly submit to the unnecessary, dangerous tortures of the surgeon's knife. Appendicitis is a disease of indigestion or dyspepsia. Advanced physicians both in Europe and America have abandoned operations and have adopted the modern medical cure for appendicitis. Thousands of cases have thus been successfully treated by these Boston Stomach Specialists.

Coming immediately after the shipment of double allowance of ammunition to the Philippines, this order is viewed with much significance by officers of the army.
Taft Wins First Skirmish
COLUMBUS, O., Jan. 5.—In spite of the furious opposition of the friends of Senator Foraker, the Taft forces in the Republican State Committee put through a programme which, if carried out, will leave little of the opposition in Ohio to Secretary Taft.
The State convention is to be held here March 3 and 4. It is to be made up by delegates to be selected by primary elections to be held in all the counties on the afternoon of February 11. Except in Hamilton and Cuyahoga.

The State convention is to be held here March 3 and 4. It is to be made up by delegates to be selected by primary elections to be held in all the counties on the afternoon of February 11. Except in Hamilton and Cuyahoga counties, where it is believed the Taft forces are overwhelming, the counties are to elect their delegates at large instead of by wards and townships. This will prevent the election of an occasional Foraker delegate in places where the Senator has a strong following.
It is made possible to have the delegates designated on the ballot by the name of the candidate for the Presidency that they stand for, and they will no doubt be so voted for in all the counties. The springing of "phony" tickets is prevented by requiring that Taft and Foraker vouch for their respective delegations before they are admitted to the ballot.
The Foraker men are saying that the rules will be disregarded, and if their delegates are not seated there will be two State conventions and two delegations to Chicago.
