INSECTS INJURIOUS TO VINES Buffetin of the College of Agriculture, University of California, Upon Timely Topics to the Grape-Growers BY H. J. QUAYLE California, with its extensive areas of vineyards and lack of extremes in climate, offers suitable conditions for the development of a considerable number of insect pests of the vine. Here also the large plantings of the European, or vinifera, vines have given the phylloxera an opportunity to do greater damage than elsewhere, in the United States. Of the two hundred and seventy-five insects we have recently listed as attacking the vine throughout the world, only a very few (a dozen or two) are really of any economic importance; all the others being, generally, but casual visitants. Two or three of these of economic importance attack the roots, while the remainder feed upon the parts of the plant above ground. The roots are sapped of their juices, rendered knotty, and caused to decay by the phylloxera. Strips or rings of the bark are eaten out by the root worm, and the fibrous roots are devoured by wire worms. The juices of the leaves are sucked out by the vine hoppers, irregular holes eaten away by flea beatles and leaf chafers, or chain-like strips devoured completely by hawk moth larvae, grasshoppers, cut worms and army worms. The young buds are destroyed by the flea beetle and by cut worms; and the shoots, pedicels, and berries have chain-like furrows gouged out by the root beetle. With the possible exception of the root beetle, all the insects attacking the vines in this State are native Amer- distance, and if a wind is blowing, be taken many rods, or even more. Those which reach a vine crawl under side of a leaf and deposit three to six eggs. These eggs are two sizes, the smaller of which males and the larger females. Females arising from eggs, after fertilization, migrate rough bark of the two-year-old where each deposits a single called the winter egg, which re-emerges upon the vine until the follicular spring. The insect which hatches this egg in the spring goes elixir to the young leaves and becomes a maker, or descends to the root gives rise to a new generation of laying root-feeder. Grip Reaches West The ravages of la grippe, which been epidemic in many Eastern states have reached the coast, and in Angeles several thousand new are under treatment. Here are observations from a well-known physician how one may avoid the disease. "Sleeping in a well ventilated plenty of fresh air and keeping body well nourished is the best description. The grip germs are bacilli, about as broad as they are. They lodge in the mucous membrane and remain dormant until the virus system is in a run-down condition they multiply. Grip germs are not carried in the mosphere. We had the first grip in 1889 when the disease from Russia. It swept the entire try, and one winter Los Angeles severe epidemic. The germ has mained ever since. Sunshine is able to the bacilli because peppers not clothe themselves warmly enough and so contract colds. There is no hoppers, irregular holes eaten away by flea beetles and leaf chafers, or chain-like strips devoured completely by hawk moth larvae, grasshoppers, cut worms and army worms. The young buds are destroyed by the flea beetle and by cut worms; and the shoots, pedicels, and berries have chain-like furrows gouged out by the root beetle. With the possible exception of the root beetle, all the insects attacking the vines in this State are native American insects. The present bulletin is intended to give simply a popular account of the more important of these. More or less extended studies have been carried on during the past year on the vine hopper and the root beetle, and these will be treated of in separate bulletins and only summary accounts given here. PHYLLOXERA The phylloxera is a native of the United States east of the rocky mountains, where it is found living upon the wild vines. It is a minute insect, related to the scale insects and plant lice. The inset was probably introduced into California upon vines, cuttings or roots, imported from France, though it was possibly introduced from several sources (and at several points). It was first noticed in the southern part of Sonoma County, in the valley surrounding the old town of Sonoma, about 1874. By 1880 vines killed by the insect had been found in Napa, Solano, and Placer counties, and hundreds of acres had been pulled up in Sonoma Valley. Since then the insect has spread to all the important grape-growing regions of California north of Tehachapi, and probably not less than fifty thousand acres have been destroyed. The phylloxera occurs normally in four forms, which have been called by Victor Mayet: 1. The gall insect, or form of multiplication; 2. The root insect, or form of devastation; 3. The winged insect, or form of colonization; 4. The sexual insect, or form of regeneration. The gall insect lives upon the leaves, and is the commonest form on the wild vines in the native habitat of the insect. It rarely or never occurs in California. In Europe it is found often upon American and rarely upon European varieties. It causes little swelling. Grip germs are not carried in the mosphere. The gall insect lives upon the leaves, and is the commonest form on the wild vines in the native habitat of the insect. It rarely or never occurs in California. In Europe it is found often upon American and rarely upon European varieties. It causes little swellings or galls upon the leaves or younger parts of the vine, which, though sometimes very numerous, do little permanent injury. The chief danger from the gall form is that it multiplies with astonishing rapidity and migrates from the leaves to the soil. Here it attacks the roots and gives rise to the root form, which is the "form of devastation," the one which finally destroys all the vines it attacks which are "non-resistant." Every insect of the root form which reaches maturity lays about twenty-five or thirty eggs, each of which is capable of developing into a new egg-layer needing no fertilization. As there are from five to seven such generations during the year the increase in number is extremely rapid. Sometimes during the summer, usually in July or August, some of the eggs laid by the root insects may develop into insects of slightly different form, called nymphs. They are somewhat larger than the normal root form and show slight protuberances on the sides, which finally develop into wings. These are the winged or colonizing insects, which emerge from the soil, and, though possessing very weak powers of flight, are capable of sailing a short If a wind is blowing may many rods, or even miles. Reach a vine crawl to the leaf and deposit from eggs. These eggs are of smaller of which produce larger females. The arising from these fertilization, migrate to the two-year-old wood, deposits a single egg, winter egg, which remains until the following insect which hatches from the spring goes either to leaves and becomes a gall-secends to the roots and a new generation of egg-eaters. There is no way THREE CROOKS IN COURT Mary Stewart and Her Two Male Consorts Are Held to Appear Before Higher Court on Charge of Burglary Mary Stewart, Ray Carson and C.W. Schulz, accused of robbing Sam Lee of $130 the morning of December 22, were given their preliminary examination in Judge Howard’s court on Saturday morning. They were held to appear before the Superior Court on charges of grand larceny, ball being put in each case at $3000. Falling to produce the amount, they were taken back to the county jail. The prisoners were brought over from Santa Ana by Constables Smithwick and Jackson. They were hand-cuffed. Clyde Bishop accompanied them as their attorney. Deputy District Attorney Rutan appeared for the people. Sam Lee and his Chinese clerk were sworn and gave evidence relating to the robbery. The three culprits drove up to Lee’s store in chinatown on the morning of the robbery. They alight-ed and entered. Carson asked the clerk to procure for Miss Stewart a glass of water. The latter, a prepossessing girl of 25, accompanied the celestial into a rear room, remaining with him, as he says, about ten minutes. She engaged him in conversation during the while, as she retained the glass, drinking out of it. Sam Lee was lying upon a bed in an adjoining room. He saw the men and woman. When the lady and the Chinese returned to the front room Carson and Schulz were on the front porch. She joined them and the trio entered a buggy and drove off. Ten minutes later Lee went to his cash drawer to procure change. He discovered the theft, but failed to report it to the police for over an hour. Telephone messages were sent officers in adjoining towns. Carson was arrested that night, and Schulz and the woman were taken into custody the following day. Constable Smithwick testified to the arrest of the crooks. Carson was arrested as he was driving into a livery barn. The woman was apprehended at her lodgings near the railway depots. Schulz came in shortly later and was placed under arrest. In the room Smithwick found $92.75. Bishop attempted to show that the Chinese were such confirmed opium smokers they had lost the power of memory and could not sufficiently identify the accused. In this he was overruled, and the defendants were bound over in $3000. That the accused are professional crooks there is little doubt. The woman alighted at Santa Ana from the 5 o'clock train the morning of the robbery, having come up from San Diego, where she is said to be wanted on a charge of grand larceny. She expected the men would meet her, but they failed to appear for some time. She loitered about the depot, and it was from descriptions of her that the railway officials were enabled to give the officers this important clew. In her room was found, beside a portion of the money stolen from the Chinaman, individual pieces of which he identified, much incriminating evidence, including burglars' tools and silken masks made from the lining of a lady's fur overcoat. The eye holes had been neatly sewed after the fashion of buttonholes. Officers say there is little doubt the trio will be speedily convicted. The preliminary examination of the trio on a robbery charge will be held on Monday morning. There are 14,005 automobiles State. In 1907 75,024 chauffeurs were issued. American Circus, Anaheim, Jan. balloon ascension daily 1 p m United States is seen in the recent purchase of Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company of 2,800,000 ties of chia wood from a lumber company operating in the Hawaiian Islands. It has been difficult for some time for the railroads of this country to obtain wooden ties satisfactory both in quantity an quality, and many of them have been looking about for an opportunity to purchase tie timber in other countries. During a recent trip of this kind by a representative of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company, arrangements were made for the purchase of ties, not only in the Hawaiian Islands but also in Japan. It is stated that ties from Japan will be made from a certain species of oak which compares in lasting qualities very favorably with the white oak of this country which has been considered the most satisfactory wood for tie purposes. About a year ago, before the representative of the railroad had started on his trip, the United States Forest Service made a few tests on the chia wood. The results indicated that, in point of strength, chia wood will rank with the oaks. It was thought from tess tests that the wood was worthy of further investigation, and the large order placed by the railroad indicates that their agent is confident Hawaiian wood will prove to be a satisfactory material for railroad ties under the conditions existing in this country.
