Sulphuring Dried Fruits
Representatives Smith, Hayes and Needham called upon the Secretary of Agriculture and had a conference with him with reference to the question of the use of sulphur in preserving dried fruit. The growers and packers of California are deeply interested in this matter, and they feared that under the pure food act as interpreted by the department their industry would be wiped out. But Secretary Wilson has been with them in the enforcement of this law, and they have been permitted to use sulphur in the preservation of fruit shipped outside the state.
The secretary told the California members that he had given the subject his personal attention during a recent trip to the state, but had been unable to learn definitely just how the sulphur is used by packers in the preparation of their fruit. He stated that agents of the department are now in California buying the preserved fruits in the open market and sending samples to Washington to be thoroughly tested in order to determine just what proportion of sulphur is used and whether or not the ingredient is harmful.
The packers declare that as soon as the fruit is boiled all the sulphur is removed from the fruit. Secretary Wilson informed the California members that it would be about February 1 before the tests would be completed, when he would make another ruling defining the attitude of the government on the use of sulphur in preserving fruits. He said he had no desire to injure this great industry, and would give the packers every advantage so long as they
ATTEMPTING TO DISCREDIT PRESIDENT
The report is current that closest friends of the administration are convinced that vast sums of money are being expended discredit President Roosevelt especially the policies for which stands and as an instance of latest development of this movement is cited the widely distributed advertisement which has appeared in the newspapers of country from one end to the other entitled "Theodore Roosevelt—stroyer." An investigation brought to light the fact that expense of $200,000 has already been entailed in the publication this advertisement, presumably promote the sale of a somewhat obscure magazine, and the natural assumption is that the expenditure is the outcome of a conspiracy known to exist by the friends of the administration, to prevent continuance of the policies which Mr. Roosevelt stands and defeat the nomination of the candidate for the presidency who is, in the judgment of the president, capable and willing to carry on the work he has begun. We believe that the president and the friends of the administration have no cause for anxiety as it is on necessary for the great body of people to know the facts that vast sums of money are being lavishly used to defeat the policies for which
Industries Follow Raw Material
How industries follow the preservation and cultivation of forests may be seen in the fact that with the growth of the government pine forests, wood-pulp factories sprang up in Germany in large numbers, as well as factories for the manufacture of sash, doors, flooring, barrels, boxes, buttons and covers for musical instruments, and a great variety of other articles. Some 4000 establishments, employing close to 60,000 people, have grown up in the mountain regions of Saxony alone, where prior to the growth of her pine forests, the country was comparatively non-productive.
Attention may be called to the fact that one hundred years ago Germany was suffering from a timber famine such as is now coming upon us. There was much agitation over the matter and the result was the establishment of the public forests in various German states, and the inauguration of careful forestry upon private estates.
The development of these wood working industries following a liberal supply of wood is similar to the experience of Cass Lake, Minnesota, near which place a national forest has been located, against the opposition of the neighboring inhabitants. A crate and box board factory has since been started at Cass Lake because of the presence of the national forest with its permanent supply of wood. The people of the village naturally take pleasure in this new industry with all that it means. This was described at length in the forest service department of the August issue of the Forestry and Irrigation Magazine.
Raw materials are the first essential to all factories. How important then to secure a sufficient supply of raw material in the way of wood, when so removed from the fruit, Secretary Wilson informed the California members that it would be about February 1 before the tests would be completed, when he would make another ruling defining the attitude of the government on the use of sulphur in preserving fruits. He said he had no desire to injure this great industry, and would give the packers every advantage so long as they did not violate the law.
OHIO FOR TAFT
Col. Myron T. Herrick, former Governor of Ohio, gave out an interview in Washington recent which is well worth careful consideration by all thoughtful people who are seeking light through the political chaos which is the distressing feature of the Republican party at present. He says, "New since William McKinley was born universal consent made the candidate date of our state in 1896 has there been such genuine and devoted advocacy among the rank and file of Ohio republicans of any man for any office as that which has come to William H. Taft. It is a happy coincidence that most of the close friends who inaugurated the McKinley movement are back of Taft and it is an unhappy coincidence that a few of those who opposed McKinley are now opposing Taft. These friends of McKinley in Ohio have watched with interest and pride the career of Judge Taft. They remember that it was McKinley who made Taft governor of the Philippines and started him on the presidency, and they recall that it was Senator Hanna who first suggested Taft as a prospective candidate for that high office. Secretary Taft is the natural successor of William McKinley, born into a greater and better day. The real secret of his strength is that...

Kinley who made Taft governor of the Philippines and started him on the presidency, and they recalled that it was Senator Hanna who first suggested Taft as a prospective candidate for that high office. Secretary Taft is the natural successor of William McKinley, born into a greater and better day. The real secret of his strength is that he has shown himself splendidly equipped for strong, wise and tactful executive work. Ohio republicans would not be for him if they did not know that the interest of property, of labor, and of national development would be safe in his hands.” Judging by the developments of the last few days in Washington the contest has already reached the stage where it is the field against Taft, just as it was the field against McKinley at a similar period of the contest in 1895-6.

For Cold Rooms Hard to Heat
The coming of the cold weather gives rise to the question of how best to heat those rooms and hallways of the house that seldom if ever warm up, no matter how big a fire there may be in the furnace or other heating apparatus.
The best way out of the difficulty is the use of auxiliary stoves—and of these it would be difficult indeed to find anything so handy and at the same time so clean and economical as the Perfection Oil Heater.
To begin with, it is absolutely safe. The wick can be turned as high or as low as possible without danger. But perhaps the most desirable feature of all is its convenience. The Perfection Oil Heater can be easily carried to any part of the house where more heat is required. It may be a cold bedroom, a chilly hallway, a sick-room. Or you can use it to heat the bathroom while you take your morning bath—then dress by it—and then carry it to the dining room and eat your breakfast in comfort. The occasions on which it can be called into use are numerous—and once you have tried the Perfection Oil Heater you'll wonder why you ever struggled through a cold winter without one. Another advantage is the smokeless burner, which prevents any of the unpleasantnesses that perhaps have given you a poor idea of oil heaters in general. It is very handsome in appearance and is beautifully finished in nickel and Japan.
Another home comfort for the long winter evenings is the Rayo Lamp, which can be used in any room in the house—from parlor to bedroom. It has the latest improved burner, making it unusually safe and clean, and an ideal lamp for all round household use.
The Perfection Oil Heater and the Rayo Lamp, combining as they do to make the house warm and cheerful, are valuable additions to any home, and no household should be without them. They are sold at a moderate price by dealers everywhere.
