ROBBERS GET A FUSILADE Jim Pickering Sends Three Shots After Men Who Tried to Rob S.P. Depot, Sunday at 3:10 a.m. At 3:10 o'clock on Sunday morning Jim Pickering, agent for the Southern Pacific, was awakened by the crashing of glass in the depot waiting room. Pickering occupies the upper floor of the depot building with his family. Realizing that robbers were about, he hastily arose and got busy with his 38 calibre. Thinking he heard footsteps ascending the stairs, he fired a shot down the stairway, tearing a hole in the petition below. He walked to the front window, which was raised, but was protected by a screen, and saw below a flashlight as one of the men turned the corner at the waiting room. The light was immediately extinguished, and the man was seen as he rounded the depot, walking leisurely northward on Los Angeles street. He was evidently a lookout. Pickering took a shot at him for old acquaintance sake, and the chap lit out in a jiffy. Pickering heard the voices of two other men on the south side of the depot. He blazed away at them. They struck out in an opposite direction to their pal, but in the darkness could not be seen. Mrs. Pickering arose at the first sound of crashing glass, and seeking to aid her husband in his effort to save the company's property, turned on the electric light. It took Pickering less than a quarter of a minute to turn it off again. Pickering and his gun remained up on the south side of the depot. Pickering and his gun remained up the rest of the night, but he had no further calls from the yeggmen. The early morning freight was due at 3:30, but did not arrive until 6. Investigation showed that the men wrenched five iron bars from in front of the window facing the south side of the waiting room. They broke open the lower right-hand pane, when they were enabled, by reaching inside and releasing the latch, to raise the sash. They failed to enter the waiting room, whence it would have been easy to pry open the window leading into the office, where the safe was located. The safe contained only a small sum of railroad money, Pickering having banked the day's receipts during the afternoon. It contained a small sum of money belonging to private parties. There was not to exceed $20 in it. It contained checks and papers of no value to the robbers. It is thought the trio are the same outfit who have recently blown open safes in railroad offices in various points in Southern California. Pickering admits he did not shoot to kill, except the fellow he thought was ascending the stairway, and he was ready to do business with him. The next time they visit him, he says, he will try for the medal at wing shooting. A SANTA ANA HOLD UP Three highwaymen, one armed with a revolver and one with a club, held up and robbed Mark Miranda at Santa Ana on Sunday evening, five minutes after he alighted from a train from the north, at the Fourth street station. While the footpads with the revolver and club menaced Miranda the third man rifled his pockets, securing $19.50. Miranda was on the way to his mother's home on Lincoln street, when the robbers, evidently lying it wait for passengers off the late trains, stopped him between the ice plant and the Sanborn packing house, a dark spot Ana on Sunday evening, five minutes after he alighted from a train from the north, at the Fourth street station. Miranda was on the way to his mother's home on Lincoln street, when the robbers, evidently lying it wait for passengers off the late trains, stopped him between the ice plant and the Sanborn packing house, a dark spot only a short distance from the railway station. He reported the hold-up to the officers, describing the footpad with the revolver, who was the only one he observed closely. The home of H. C. Wiley at Santa Ana was broken into Sunday afternoon and it is considered that the same men committed this robbery. Articles of jewelry were stolen. A New Australian Nut B.
