MEN GO BACK TO WORK
Mills and Factories Reopen and Many Thousand Employes Return to Labor—Flurry Over.
From every quarter of the country comes reports which show beyond doubt that the temporary check to industrial prosperity felt as a result of the panic, is almost at an end; that there is a reawakening everywhere with the reopening of mills and factories, putting of employees back to work and the renewal of orders by wholesale and retail business houses.
In New England, and especially in Massachusetts, the woolen industry has taken a fresh start. In Pennsylvania the steel and iron industry is resuming its normal tenor; and in New York state the Knit Goods Manufacturers' Association, numbering fifty-six large concerns, agreed to cancel no more orders to factories.
Perhaps the best sign of renewal of confidence is the placing of men back at work. This is best indicated by the action of the great railroads. Of 8000 men dismissed by the Union Pacific, 6000 have been ordered back to their places by direction of E. H. Harriman.
The financial disturbance is being forgotten. There is best evidence of this in the resumption of business by a large number of concerns throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont and New York state, all of which either partly or wholly shut down.

The financial disturbance is being forgotten. There is best evidence of this in the resumption of business by a large number of concerns throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, Vermont and New York state, all of which either partly or wholly shut down.
In addition to resumption of plants throughout the country, there has been letting of new contracts by railroads and smaller corporations, chartering of new banks and formation of new corporations, together with merging of others.
The facts of the general situation prove that there were not so many workmen laid off as was believed. For instance, all the railroads entering Chicago, the greatest railroad center in the country, dismissed 30,000 men. They employ, probably forty times that many. All the other railroads of the country, as far as can be learned, dismissed only 14,000C, and that figure includes the 8000 let out by the Union Pacific. But there is the strongest indication that these men will go back to work very soon.
Strange to say while the railroads were dropping their men, their business was growing. It is an actual fact that the gross earnings last week of the railroads entering Chicago showed a large increase. It is the belief of the traffic men that a like increase will be shown this week.
Youngstown, O., Nov. 29.—More than 5000 mill men were restored to their jobs today when the plant of the Republic Iron and Steel Company and several departments of the Brown Bonnell steel plant will resume operations. They have been idle for two weeks, as have several other big steel and iron mills in this city.
It was announced also today that, within ten days or two weeks, the big plant of the Youngstown Sheet and Tube Company would be in active operation, with at least 2000 men restored to employment.
